Second Floor Apartment, 3br, 2bath With Full Kitchen. Boat Dock Available.

We completely renovated our historic Backriver house three years ago. The second floor has a spacious master suite with bath, and two smaller bedrooms with single beds that share a bathroom in the hall.

The second floor, which is completely separated from the first floor, has an open floor plan, with the kitchen, dining room and living room areas facing the back river just outside.

Please keep in mind that it is on the second floor so it is not so comfortable for children. Additionally, the dock is open. children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Guests are welcome to use the dock which consists of a stationary portion, and a floating dock on deep water.

About Mariam Gilmer

Brad and I love Tybee Island. When our son was 4 years old, I asked him what he wanted for his birthday. He asked me to take him to a beach. We did research and found out that Tybee Island was the closest beach to Atlanta. So we packed up our things and took him to the beach for his 4th birthday. We fell in love with Tybee's beauty and laid back culture. So when we had a big gift from our parents, we decided to buy a house on Tybee. The moment we walked to this house and saw the view from the sunroom, we decided to buy it.

It was an old house, and unfortunately, it had not been well maintained. We did a lot of repairs on the home, but finally, we decided we would do a major, historic renovation. We kept the historic characteristic of it and matched the historic material wherever possible. So it is a historic house with all the modern convenience.

Why Mariam Gilmer chose Tybee Island

We love back river because it is quiet and peaceful even during the holidays when the Island is very busy with visitors. We love the sunset views, the stars at night, and the floating dock. We also love having an almost 100-year-old home which we have renovated to be extremely comfortable, but which retains the feeling of an old beach home.

What makes this apartment unique

This is one of the few traditional historic Tybee cottages on the back river. This property, which has been a hotel in the past, lets you feel what it was like on Tybee many years ago. The view of the back river and Little Tybee Island are fantastic at all times of day, and in all kinds of weather. The serenity of the back river can't be beat.

Dolphins swim under and round our dock chasing fish and each other, flounder rest on the river bottom just off the side of the dock, and the unobstructed view to the West of the night sky is spectacular.

It is just a short two-minute walk to sandy beaches, or if fishing is your thing, it is about the same amount of time walking to get to the state fishing pier.

With the exception of AJ's restaurant at the end of the street, this house is in a quite, residential neighborhood, so the experience is truly unique. It is like being in any very small town, but with the water just outside.

Bring your kayaks and paddle over to Little Tybee island just across the river, down river a short distance to the ocean, or up-river to AJ's and beyond.

What a beautiful, elegant home. Stunning views and dock access onto the back river. An 8 min walk to South Tybee beach, nestled in a peaceful, quiet neighborhood. We'll stay again.

Beautiful Home

I really enjoyed our stay at this home. The inside was much nicer than I even anticipated from the photos. It was brand new and very clean! The walk into town and to the beach was extremely easy, and the street and property was very quiet despite the holiday crowds! Parking was easy and convenient as well!

I offer a few suggestions to the homeowners just so they can improve on what was almost a perfect experience:

-- The hand rail up to the property needs to be sanded/refinished. Our son got a splinter early on in the trip and I got a pretty severe one in my hand as well that was very deep.

-- It would be nice if the master suite had more privacy. There currently is only a half-door on the bedroom, it would be nice to have a full close-able/lockable door.

The views were lovely but the accommodations were not very comfortable.

We loved the view of the water and having a dock was great! The accommodations were not ideal. There was not a single comfortable place to sit. No television and no light control on the windows. Every morning when the sun came up it was as bright as day. The bedding smelled musty and the master bathroom sink would not drain. The kids were afraid to go in their bathroom due to the large roach bugs crawling up from beneath the bathroom sink. This is a very old house that is showing it’s age. The floors are very unlevel and it feels like the place is about to fall down. That may be the reason why they were trying to sell it while we were there. We accidentally packed one of the padlocks into our luggage. Before we could ship it back the owner charged us $70.00 for one padlock. We tried to contact owner but she would not return our call. While we stayed there she had mowers come up to mow the grass and the mowers blew grass all over our freshly clean vehicles. We understand this was out of their control but they took no responsibility and didn’t even act like they were sorry . We loved Tybee and Savannah but would not recommend this property.

Owner's Response: I am very glad that you loved the view of the Back River and enjoyed using the dock. Until I charged you $70.00 for replacing 4 padlocks,keys and labor, you "enjoyed every minute" of your vacation. We ask our guests if they find something is not working or anything that needs attention to immediately inform us. All your complaints were brought to my attention after I charged for the padlocks. In the master bedroom there is a large chair and a chaise. In the sitting area there are a love seat and two comfortable arm chairs. In each room there is at least one chair. All windows have blinds and/or curtains. At the beach it is a common problem with cockroaches but on the second floor we have never had issues with cockroaches. After your departure, we inspected the apartment and didn't find any dropping or any other signs of cockroaches. Nevertheless, we spray regularly. No other guest has ever complained about roaches. The bathroom sink was blocked because of a big clump of hair. Had you mentioned it as soon as you found out, I would have asked the maintenance person to take care of it. Our house was built in 1928. It is a historic house in the historic Back River. It is totally renovated in 2014. All features are only about 3 years old. We have it on the market because we can't as initially was planned- to relocate to Tybee Island. Incidentally, this old house is worth $1.7 million. After you left, I received communications from the cleaning person that they apartment was in disarray. And that a padlock was missing. I sent a text to you and asked you if you had any idea where we should look for it. You responded that once you get home, you would check your luggage and will let me know. On July 22, I sent you a text since I hadn't heard from you re. padlock. I explained that I would have to replace 4 padlock since they all work with the same key. On July 23, in the evening when I didn't hear from you, I charged your deposit. At that time, you responded because you were angry that I had charged you $70.00 for one padlock. And you made a list of your complaints. You demanded $30.00 for your car wash. I explained that I was not responsible for your car. I also ensured you that as soon as I receive the padlock, I would refund you. We received the padlock on July 2; 14 days after you left. I immediately, sent you a refund. Since July 23, your husband has been sending me threatening texts. I have filed with police.

Great location and a lot of character!

My family really enjoyed our stay here! The home has a lot of unique characteristics! We loved watching the sunsets on the dock and the boys enjoyed some fishing time as well. Short walk to river beach and about a 10 min walk to ocean beach. The home is in a very quiet neighborhood and we found it very peaceful and relaxing! Mariam is great and answers all questions quickly!

Beautiful Cottage on the Back River

We had an excellent week in Tybee staying at this property. The owners, Mariam and Brad were very nice and did a great job of communicating with us before, during and after our stay.

We especially loved the view from the living room area and spent much of our time on the dock enjoying the wildlife (dolphins / pelicans / herons) on the back river. Access to the south beach is about a block away (very easy) and we walked and read on the beach everyday.

We would definitely stay here again on our next trip to Tybee.

Our stay on Tybee Island was wonderful! The property is beautiful as are the views surrounding it.

We stayed at Mariam's second floor space on the property for 4 nights in our first trip to Tybee Island. The space was VERY clean and made for a perfect stay. We loved how well preserved the home is (probably almost 90 or so years old but maintained beautifully with no signs of aging).

The porch upstairs, backyard, and dock were the perfect addition to this property which is right on the water, 2 or 3 homes away from where the beach starts (walk down to this beach entrance rather than trying one of the main public beach entrances on the other side of the island. We enjoyed our side of the beach much more!)

Mariam is a fantastic communicated via email and text and will ensure your stay goes smoothly and that you have everything you need while staying at her property.

We will definitely visit again!

There are cute shops with all kinds of beach decorative items. There are several galleries with local artists' works.

But if you want peace and quiet, our house is located in a quiet residential area where you can relax, read and watch the sunset.
