About the property

House walking distance to town, 4 Bedrooms, 2 Full Baths

Fall dates are filling up fast! Saugatuck is the perfect destination for a fall getaway, offering stunning fall colors; shops, galleries and restaurants within walking distance; sunsets on the beach; hikes in the woods; and much more.

With 4 bedroom, 2 full baths and a reasonable nightly rate (cleaning included!), the Red House is one of the best values in Saugatuck.

This comfortable, historic vacation rental home is ideally located 'on the hill,' just three blocks from downtown Saugatuck, and offers 4 bedrooms (three queen bed rooms and a full+twin bunk bed) and 2 full baths (one upstairs, one down), plus comfortable living and dining room and an updated kitchen, in a quiet residential neighborhood. Sleeping for 8 (that's our max number of guests). The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need for cooking and dining.

As a dedicated seasonal rental home since 2006, you can be assured the house is fully stocked with everything you need to make your stay comfortable. Linens (sheets, blankets, bath towels) are provided along with 'extras' like dishwasher and laundry detergent and hand soaps, to make packing easier for you. Professional cleaning before each stay is included. The owners live a few blocks away, and are available if you need anything. The Red House is a proud recipient of the Saugatuck Douglas Historical Society Heritage Preservation Award, and is safety-certified by the local fire department and City of Saugatuck.

The Red House has played host for many memorable summer family vacations, girls' weekends, couples getaways, and even company retreats, with many guests who return year after year.

UPSTAIRS--Bedroom #1-queen bed + full bath; Bedroom #2-bunk bed with full mattress on bottom, twin (single) mattress on top.

DOWNSTAIRS: Bedroom #3-queen bed; Bedroom #4-queen bed; downstairs full bath. There are no other sleeping areas in the house.

Please note that the Red House was built in the 1870s and completely renovated in the early 2000s. It's not fussy, clean, full of character...and old. So try as we might, we can't guarantee you won't encounter the occasional spider or ant during June, or a bit of a draft in November.

About Kate, kate@redhouserental.com

Hi, we're Andrew & Kate.

We moved to Saugatuck in 1991, fell in love with the town, and have lived here full-time ever since. We bought the Red House in 1992 and lived there until 2006, spending the first five years on major renovations. When we moved (a few blocks away) in 2006 we couldn't give up the house, so now it's a vacation rental! We have one son, who attends the local high school.

Kate, kate@redhouserental.com purchased this house in 1992

Why Kate, kate@redhouserental.com chose Southwest

We've lived in Saugatuck full-time since 1991. We love the people here, the charming downtown, great shops and restaurants, and the breathtaking coastline. We enjoy boating, Oval Beach, music in the park, art galleries, special events, and just taking in everything Saugatuck has to offer. We often go a whole weekend without getting in a car, since we can walk or bike wherever we want to go. Saugatuck can be what you want it to be: relaxing, friendly, laid-back; a party town; a mecca for the arts; a nature-lover's paradise; and family-friendly.

What makes this house unique

Renters tell us they love the convenient location (walk to town, but quiet) and the casual, comfortable feel of the house. A first-floor queen bed and full bath is ideal for folks who have trouble with stairs. Kids love the play area. (The house sits on an oversized lot back from the street, making it safer for little ones.) Pet owners appreciate being able to bring their dogs (with permission).

The Red House was perfect for our family!

  • 5 of 5

This was our third time staying here. We love the location and the open concept kitchen, dining room, and living room. The children were very excited about the new wooden play set and the adults loved the new decking on the front porch! We'll be back!

Perfect Vacation Home!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our time spent at The Red House. The home is located within walking distance of the charming town of Saugatuck yet is situated on a private street and provides a relaxing respite after a day of exploring all that Saugatuck has to offer. The house provides every comfort and accommodation that one would desire during a week away. Surprisingly, the rooms are much larger than they appear in the pictures and our family of eight never felt cramped or crowded. Kate, the owner, was very responsive to any inquiry we had and it is apparent that she places great emphasis on creating a comfortable and welcoming haven for those who rent her home. I would greatly encourage anyone looking for a home to rent in Sauguatuck to take advantage of all that The Red House has to offer!

Saugatuck 2017

  • 5 of 5

We truly enjoyed our stay! When we were searching for a home for our family vacation (8 adults/1 dog) we chose the Red House because of its exceptional value, along with the near perfect reviews, and we were not disappointed. The house is actually much bigger than it appears in the pictures, very well-maintained and clean, and very well-stocked with just about anything you need. The neighborhood is very quaint, and we appreciated the short walk into town. Lots of cute restaurants, open-air bars and live music! The patio is cozy, but we all enjoyed grilling and conversation there! The side yard is really quite big - had a few bag games and Frisbee games there! The only downfall to our stay was they were constructing a new home right next door. We had a nice quiet weekend, but they were out at 7 a.m. working Monday morning. Hopefully that will be completed before the summer gets under way!

We would recommend the Red House!!

Owner's Response: We're so glad you enjoyed the house and yard, Betsy! I'm sorry there was construction during your stay--fortunately it's temporary and will be completed during the summer of 2017. I hope you'll come back for a quieter stay sometime soon!

great location

  • 3 of 5

The Red House is in a great location, walking distance to downtown. Due to a house being built next door, our whole house awoke at 7am every morning with saws and hammers.

The house was adequately cleaned for most people, but I require "clean" a bit more than most. The house needs a good old fashion spring cleaning.

Don't stop yourself from staying at The Red House by my comments, we all still had a great time.

Great size and convenient location

  • 4 of 5

House was much bigger than the pictures eluded to. Easy and convenient access to downtown due to stairs that lead you straight into the middle of downtown on Mason. Was great to have a kitchen and grill to make meals so that we didn't have to eat out every meal. Only real issues we had was a musty smell and lots of spiders in the house but we've must have been the first people in a while to be there, it was opening weekend/memorial day weekend. Great value and perfect for group of friends or a family. Owners were very responsive and gave great suggestions.

Owner's Response: Sorry about the spiders, Joseph! It is an old house, and Saugatuck is on the water, so keeping up with the spiders can be a challenge. I've talked to our cleaners about it. And I apologize for the musty smell--it turned out our basement dehumidifier had turned off. We've got it back up and running and the smell is gone. Thanks for letting us know!
