Overview

About the property

Historic Virginia City Vigilante House, built in 1864

This is a fun National Historical Registry home kept in original period style, built in 1864 when President Lincoln was in office. One block from main street, peaceful yet in the action of Virginia City. Large bedrooms, two upstairs, one with a king size bed, & one with a queen size bed, and one downstairs bedroom with a queen bed. In front is an ample parking area for cars, quads or RV's. It is also children and pet friendly including dog kennel. A close walk right around the corner is the creamery with delicious homemade ice cream and then next door to the candy shop with old time taffy making machine you can watch from the front window. There are several restaurants to choose from and for yummy hamburgers, sandwiches, salads and pizza Bob's Place is great. There is literature on the table in the living room to help with choosing restaurants and a map of Virginia City to get around town easily. So much to see and do! Visit the interesting museums, antique stores and Opera house with hilarious satires. You don't want to miss The Follies with non-offensive adult humor that people come from miles around to see. Live entertainment at it's best that is very close and just a pleasant stroll down the street along the willow lined creek. Our place has a large auto-sprinklered lawn area with patio and grill surrounded by old growth lilacs, apple trees and chokecherry bushes. The Vigilante house was built by famous Paris Pfouts, the first Mayor of Virginia City and President of the Virginia City Vigilantes in 1864, who were the fellers that hung the gold carrying stagecoach robbers, Sheriff Henry Plummer and his gang of Road Agents calling themselves 'The Innocents'. Starting out as a log cabin and then added onto numerous times, it's fun to imagine stepping back in time as this important man in history lived here in this Vigilante house with his family. Yes, relive Virginia City’s wild and roaring population 14,000+ mid 1800’s in this fun and comfortable historical home. Virginia City’s gold funded the Union (north) in the raging civil war as this home was built changing from Idaho Territory to Montana Territory in 1864. Meander through nooks and crannies of different rooms with fun history wall. Bullet holes have been patched!

Charming is right! Bright, open and comfortable. 1 block from the main street but quiet and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

I took my parents and sister for a weekend getaway and stayed at the Vigilante House. We had a wonderful time! The house has been beautifully restored and is filled with vintage furniture that makes it feel like a step back in time. We wished the walls could talk. It was comfortably furnished with everything we needed to cook, BBQ or just sit and visit. Everything was neat and tidy, and there were lots of magazines and brochures to tell us about the area. The rooms were light and bright and the place had such a peaceful feeling--not always the case with old houses. I was concerned that we would miss having a TV, but the opposite was true. We had no problem filling the time sharing family stories, walking the streets and reading all the wonderful historical markers, and exploring the house and yard. You're just a few hundred yards from the busy main street but since you're down the hill the area is quiet. The Star Bakery in Nevada City had the best pastries ever, and the restaurants and ice cream shop in Virginia City were great too. If you want a relaxing vacation in a beautiful house in a fascinating historical town, I highly recommend the Vigilante House. We're already planning our next visit.
