The SeaView cottage is called 'Hale Haumea,' for the Earth Mother, Hawaiian Goddess Haumea, who protects the new land created by her daughter, Pele. She is associated with fertility and creativity. This cottage was built by an artist as her retreat and studio and we hope that the beauty and awesome nature surrounding it inspires you as well.
A writer and wannabe mermaid, I love this area for its soothing warm ponds and back-to-nature feel, not available in the more touristy parts of the islands.
Diane Koerner, owner purchased this house in 2006

“Thank you for sharing your amazing Hawaii home with us. We really appreciated all of your activity suggestions and tried to do as many as we could with our limited amount of time. We loved the lava flow, the hot pond and the non-touristy escape Hale Haumea offered. We also ate as many likikoi that we could while there! They are our favorite. Mahalo!”
Our stay at Hale Haumea house was nothing short of fabulous. The owner overdid herself in providing us with everything that we needed for our vacation. First, the setting- Diane’s place is located in a very quiet and safe neighborhood surrounded by lush tropical jungle. Every morning, we were greeted with birds singing in the back yard and went to sleep with sounds of frogs doing their courtship croaks. The inside of the house was very clean and we found everything that we needed- a large fridge, coffee maker, microwave, necessary utensils and dishes as well as washing machine& dryer were all available for our stay. Moreover, the added bonus of screened Lanai and all-natural fragrance-free hair care products was a nice surprise.
Hale Haumea is located in a short driving distance to an amazing black sand beach in Kalapana. Every Wednesday& Friday, there is a farmer’s market near the parking lot for the beach- don’t miss that event!! This is what island of Hawaii is truly about- great local food, entertainment and the feel of being treated with true aloha warmth and friendliness.
The area of Pahoa is also a great starting point to explore one of the greatest National Parks in US- the Volcanoes National Park. We felt in love with this magical place where natural forces meet to create new land. We hiked most of the trails this park offers and we will definitely come back some day to explore it once again.
In summary, we are very pleased with Diane’s rental house and can recommend staying at Hale Haumea to anyone looking for a true Hawaiian atmosphere and surroundings.
Hale Haumena is a wonderfully cozy, comfortable, and clean cottage in one of the most ideal locations on the Big Island. The surrounding area is beautiful, virtually free of VOG, and not as populated as other spots. The strip along the coast is a small sunbelt and thus gets less rain than most other places on the Hilo side. We spent our days rotating between the gorgeous black sand beach, soaking in the relaxing and rejuvenating warm ponds, and snorkeling at the Kapoho Tide Pools. The cottage offers all the basic amenities, a visually pleasing atmosphere, and a screened-in lanai. Hale Haumena is the perfect place for anyone with allergies, asthma, migraines, or chemical sensitivities as fragranced products are not permitted. All the environmentally safe ones are provided for your use in addition to scent-free bedding. We enjoyed a Qi Gong class at Kalani, the nearby yoga resort, which offers a variety of programs and massage. The local community offers a very friendly ambiance. After enjoying the local culture and beauty for just a week, we decided to move here permanently! It's a very special area of Hawai'i.
A lovely space. Well thought out. Everything we needed including a cooler and ice packs for our lunches. And a washing machine! We loved the space.
First time in Seaview area. Great location close to hot ponds, volcano viewing and Uncle Roberts. Hale was extremely clean. Satellite tv, internet for nail. Lanai was enclosed with screen so sat outside without worry of bugs to bother. 3 of us started ...husband and son. Owner was available to address our needs.
Very clean, attractive, well-equipped cottage nestled among beautiful, abundant tropical foliage. Kitchen exceptionally supplied with every type of cooking utensil needed. Really delightful. Plus: owner available by e-mail/phone to answer any questions.
Cottage was very clean and well maintained. Location is good for exploring Volcano National Park and the East / SE part of the island. Full kitchen is a bonus if you want to make your own meals. Washer and dryer are available too, which was nice for us on our extended stay.
Near all the Volcanic Features of the Big Island: Kehena Black Sand Beach for swimming, dolphin and whale watching; County Lava Viewing area to hike in or boat in to see the fireworks as lava enters the ocean; Waiopae Marine Sanctuary for snorkeling in lava pools; geothermal ocean warm ponds; and Volcanoes Ntl Park, where you can hike myriad trails, enter lava tubes, feel the steam vents, and watch the glow from Halemaumau Crater. Pahoa Town, 12 miles away, offers shopping, restaurants and all necessary amenities. Hilo, Hawaii's 2nd largest city, is 38 miles away, with waterfalls galore, plus shopping centers, theaters, museums, art galleries, and numerous restaurants, clubs and cultural events.
VISIT A VOLCANO
About an hour’s drive from the cottage, Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park is home to two active volcanoes and 150 miles of hiking trails. You can walk through a fern forest into a cavernous lava tube or stare at a steaming caldera (volcanic crater) create fireworks at dusk.
