La Mariposa is for those of us who are searching for a respite from the frenzied pace of modern civilization. It is for lovers who want a romantic escape; for friends who delight in sharing great food, drink, and good conversation in a tropical setting and colorful culture; and for surfers who travel the coast looking for the one spot that makes them want to return again and again. Whether you surf, snorkel, fish, golf, read, practice yoga, ride horses, explore tide pools and caves, listen to music, enjoy the sun and a few margaritas, or just reflect under a canopy of stars, a stay at La Mariposa will reconnect you with your spirit and rejuvenate your soul.
La Mariposa was designed by a noted Mexican architectural team and built by native craftsman in 2005. It is located in the small village of Troncones on the west coast of Mexico where the translucent swell of the blue Pacific meets the Sierra Madre del Sur Mountains. La Mariposa, a magnificent 6500-square-foot home, provides a secure, private, and serene atmosphere with all the comforts you can imagine.
The Villa has four air-conditioned bedrooms, five bathrooms, a state-of-the-art kitchen, a media room with a 52-inch US Satellite TV and DVD Player, iPod stereo with speakers throughout the house and pool area, and Wi-Fi Internet connection. A 40-foot Infinity pool and Palapa both overlook the beach. The Palapa is equipped with a wet bar, barbecue and seating for outdoor dining and relaxation.
A staff of two provides maid service and maintenance. Meals can be provided upon request.

A truly regenerative vacation!
La Mariposa was soothing from the moment we stepped out of the car. It's located in a remote, non-touristy, area on the Pacific side of Mexico. A welcome change from Cancun et.al. Shared the house with 8 great friends and remains so! Oscar, Franny, and Elena (the caretakers) made our stay perfect - well kept property. Beach hikes, village visits, and poolside activities (and non-activities) abounded. Watched some very talented surfers every day conquer some very challenging waves. We will be back!
Our favorite spot in Mexico
We shared the house with 3 other couples and it was perfect! The grounds are beautiful, the pool and cabana lovely, and the house is well-furnished and comfortable. The beach is right outside the gate and we all walked for miles every day. But the best things about the house were Fanny and Oscar. They took care of us like family, cooking great food, arranging kayaking, massages and anything else we needed, but most of all, their presence was a constant joy. Troncones is an small town where we felt we had an authentic Mexican experience. We didn't rent a car, but we will next time because the town isn't in walking distance and sometimes it was difficult to get a taxi late at night. And there will definitely be a 'next time'!
Like having our own private resort
We met six friends here for a 10 day getaway. They flew to Ixtapa and Oscar picked them up, while we drove from San Miguel de Allende where we live. What a terrific choice for our winter destination location! While Troncones was even more remote and quiet than we anticipated, we quickly fell into the lazy groove. La Mariposa is exactly as described: spacious, tremendously comfortable, nicely maintained, with a most inviting pool and private beach area. Oscar and Fanny's enthusiasm for making our stay pleasant was appreciated: from suggesting a few musicians to play during our cocktails one night, to arranging a kayak trip and a masseuse, to readying a bowl of fresh cut fruit each morning and cooking some great meals. And Elena was delightful too. We were happy to have a few restaurants within walking distance, but we were VERY thankful that we had a car -- as the main town of Troncones is about 2 miles down the beach (and since there were 8 of us, even with taxis, transportation took a little effort). No place is perfect, and we did share a few small items with the owner (need for a blow dryer, margarita glasses, and a few new pillows). He quickly assured us that he'll take care of it. Advice for travelers: have Fanny cook often, definitely go kayaking in the lagoon, eat as much fresh seafood as you can, and don't be surprised when you're greeted by a few furry friends. We all grew to love walking the beach with Gorda following close behind. Overall, La Mariposa is certainly one of the best houses in Troncones and we look forward to returning!
Beauty at it's best
There were 8 of us and from the moment we met Oscar, we knew it was going to be a great 10 days. La Mariposa is a beautiful home with great views, great gathering spaces, a great pool and great proximity to the somewhat private beach. We sunned, we swam , we enjoyed cocktail hour, we watched the sun set every night, we ate Fanny and Oscar's perfectly prepared fare, mexican and not, we walked the beaches for hours and enjoyed the feel of a non-touristy area of Mexico. La Mariposa is outside of town but the privacy made a difference. We were treated like royalty by Fanny, Oscar and Elena. One of the highlights was the kayaking trip to the lagoon. It didn't sound appealing at first, but luckily we went for it anyway. it's a not to miss experience.
Life in paradise
What an amazing vacation! We had the good fortune to stay at La Mariposa for a month, and it truly was living in paradise. Every day was a lazy relaxing experience with hours spent by the pool, walking on the beach, watching beautiful sunsets, and enjoying life in Troncones. It was like living in a luxurious resort. The magnificent house itself is spacious, well-furnished and maintained, and easy to live in for eight people. The caretakers, Fanny and Oscar, were unbelievable - kind, helpful, unobtrusive, and great cooks (we even took some of their recipes home with us). Their local knowledge was very useful to us, and made our stay all that more enjoyable. We will be back for sure, and we highly recommend La Mariposa to anyone seeking their own private tropical oasis.
Heaven on Earth!!
We spent 13 fabulous days and nights at this truly magnificent villa. There were 6 of us....two 86-year-olds, two 40-somethings, and 2 boys age 10 and 11. The house, grounds, pool and adjacent beach (literally 20 paces to the water's edge) were spectacular. The bedrooms spacious, beautifully appointed, and open to the soothing sound of the Pacific waves. The home is decorated with fabulous indigenous artwork and gorgeous furnishings, while remaing super comfortable. But truly the best part of our experience were Fanny and Oscar, the housekeepers. They cooked fabulous meals for us, taught my kids how to fish and took care of our every need. We will certainly be back to this lovely place!!
