Overview

About the property

Unique lakefront location, surrounded by water, sunset views, close to Ithaca!

Come and enjoy the unique and private retreat provided by our lakefront cottage. Located at the water's edge at the big bend in Cayuga Lake just north of Ithaca, The Point is located on 1.4 level acres, and features an incredibly rare 650 feet of lakefront with no cliffs or stairs to the lake. The 4-season, fully insulated 3 BR/1.5 Bath ranch-style house faces 270 degree lake views, plus a private cove to the north/back of the house that adds to the feeling of being on an island, right in the center of Cayuga Lake! Originally purchased by the family in the 1930s as a waterfowl-hunting property, this property attracts plenty of local wildlife. In the past year we have seen a wide variety of waterfowl, as well as kingfishers, woodpeckers, songbirds, osprey, blue and green herons, owls, turtles, squirrels, chipmunks, voles, beavers, minks, muskrats, woodchucks, foxes, and deer on site at various times.

Rise early and take in the stillness at sunrise. Enjoy the lake breezes and the sound of the waves against the rocky lakeshore. Quietly observe a great blue heron stalking crawfish along the water's edge, or marvel at an osprey plunging out of the sky to triumphantly carry off a fish. Hunt for fossils in the lakeshore shale. Observe the enormous carp swimming lazily amongst the water lilies in the shallows of the cove behind the house, while the turtles sun themselves on logs and rocks. Watch an afternoon thunderstorm advance across the lake and pass by, leaving the air clean and fresh. Explore the area parks, waterfalls, and wineries. Laugh around a table, enjoying a meal with loved ones, or relax around a bonfire. Watch the stunning colors of sunset bleed into the deep sapphire of twilight and the stars start to twinkle. Let the sound of the water against the rocks and the conversations of the frogs in the back cove lull you to sleep at night. The perfect mix of nature and convenience, the Point is far enough from everything to be relaxing, and still an easy 10-15 minute drive to Ithaca College, Cornell University, and downtown Ithaca. An ideal location for a relaxing get-away, or to visit either college. This private and unique lakefront property is close to area attractions and a perfect spot for visitors with any interests!

At the road's end, the flat driveway leads you to the convenient gravel parking area, right at lake level - there are no long cliffside staircases from the house in order to be near the water unlike many other houses on Cayuga Lake. Park next to the water, cross the wide level lawn, take 1 step up on to a wooden deck at the front of the house and pause a moment to take in the incomparable lake views. The front door opens into an open floor plan kitchen/dining area. A kitchen island provides a spot to sit and chat while preparing a meal, with panoramic views from the kitchen windows. The kitchen is fully equipped with a full-size refrigerator/freezer, stove/oven, microwave, toaster, 12-cup drip coffee maker, blender, hand-mixer, wafflemaker, and dishes/tableware. A 21-bottle wine fridge allows you to optimally store your finds after a day on the wine trail.

The living room area includes comfortable seating, a flat screen TV with cable and a DVD player, a library of family-friendly DVD movies, and a cupboard full of games. Wireless internet is provided. A wall of living room windows facing southwest look past a mature, shade-providing evergreen tree to views over the lake south to the town of Ithaca, with Cornell University and Ithaca College on opposite hilltops above the town. There are 3 bedrooms (BR1 = 1 king , BR2 = 1 queen + 1 twin, BR3 = 1 queen) and 2 bathrooms: 1 full bath with a shower/tub combo and a heated towel rack, and 1 half-bath. The bathrooms are small and modest, consistent with the era when the house was built, but clean and functional. Full sized washer/dryer in the utility room. All three BR have windows that overlook the private cove to the north of the house, great for wildlife viewing throughout the year. Recently updated decor features a comfort-oriented, eclectic style, celebrating the viticultural, agricultural, and geologic influences of the area, with regional art adorning the walls.

Outside, a firepit provides a place to relax around a lakeside bonfire and roast marshmallows, and a Weber propane barbecue is available for grilling on the front deck. A 4-person hot tub on the front deck provides an incomparable place to relax with amazing lake views (please note that this hot tub is small; really optimal for 2, will accommodate 4 people maximum). During the warmer months, the front deck also provides comfortable seating for lounging, and an 8-person dining table; dining on the deck with the views across the lake is not to be missed! The huge, level lawn provides plenty of room for the kids to run and burn off energy, and kids will also enjoy the playground at Myers Park, a 5-10 minute walk away!! Swimming access to the water is made easy by stone steps at the water's edge, or the swim ladder on the front dock. During the summer months, comfortable hammocks placed under the trees at the tip of the property invite blissful relaxation right by the water. There are 2 adult-sized kayaks, 2 kid-sized kayaks (kids <100lbs) and a stand-up-paddleboard available for use during the summer, and a sheltered, gradual launch area right by the kayak/SUP rack!

Two docks are on the property. Wave action on the front dock on Cayuga Lake itself does not allow for safe mooring of boats here, but it provides water access, a place to fish, and fantastic lake views. The back dock provides access to the calm cove behind the house that connects to a marina, and receives almost no wave action. Small boats with shallow drafts may be moored here, but to access this area, they must be navigated through a narrow and shallow opening under a short bridge, which also limits the freeboard height of boats that may pass through. If mooring a boat is important to you, please contact the owners to determine if this is viable for your boat before booking. Alternatively, the Point is within a very short walk of 2 marinas where trailered boats may be launched and temporary slip rental may be available. It is recommended that slip arrangements be made in advance! The marinas are close enough to be convenient, but they don't intrude on the property privacy.

An electronic code lock means that you can arrive as late as you wish and come and go as you please. We provide bed linens and a set of bath towels for interior use for every guest, and cleaning is taken care of by us when you depart. During the summer months, window air conditioning units are provided in each bedroom, and fans are provided throughout the rest of the house to move cool lake breezes through the many windows.

Come and make some incomparable memories! We hope that you enjoy The Point!

About Michele

This property is my husband's childhood home and as a result we have close family ties to the area. As we do not currently reside here full time, we offer the property for vacation rental when not using it ourselves, and we enjoy sharing fun local hidden gems with our guests. It's very important to us that our home is clean, functional, and comfortable, and we like to emphasize the local flair in the decor. I am a photographer and my work emphasizes the regional landscape; I strive for my images be evocative, to elevate above the simply documentary, but also to be representative of the time and place in which they were made. My work can be seen online at Finger Lakes Fine Art Prints.

Michele purchased this house in 2015

Why Michele chose Cayuga Lake

We also offer another property on the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake for vacation rentals (Pura Vida, VRBO #809940) but The Point has been in my husband's family for generations and is very special to us! The location is truly unique, and the views are unrivaled. There are no residential neighbors, and as it is almost completely surrounded by water, it is private and peaceful. The location is within easy reach of beautiful hiking trails, wineries, waterfalls, farmer's markets, and two fun college towns. Unlike so many Cayuga Lake cottages which are located on a cliff, there are no tall staircases here, and one feels much more connected to the lake!

What makes this house unique

The location of this point in combination with the angulation of the lake really does make this property feel almost like an island. Boaters are active in the southern portion of Cayuga Lake, so during the day on weekends there are lots of sailboats and cruisers to watch, but midweek and during the off season the lake is quiet and peaceful, and the wildlife really does seem to like the property. We love the proximity to Ithaca and the vibrant college scene (while still feeling like we can enjoy a private retreat), and all that the wine region and nearby state parks have to offer.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had such a lovely time. Thank you. The beds were comfy, which I see as vital to a great stay anywhere and the house was immaculate and there was clearly attention paid to the décor, with some interesting sculptural art and furniture. But in truth, for me, the location was the most significant element of our stay. I know Cayuga Lake well and the privacy, quiet and beauty of the Point was exceptional. The fact that the house sits alone on Myers Point makes it a very unusual spot for Cayuga Lake and it’s eastern shore location makes it the perfect spot for cocktails at sunset. To owners Michelle and Don, well done! It was lovely. My husband and I and a dear friend rented, and we availed ourselves of Simmer Down’s catering for a dinner party for eight (we have old friends in Ithaca) one gorgeous night and K's cooking was casual and beautifully done. And don’t forget your field glasses if you want to keep an eye on the bird and other aquatic life that pop up from time to time. We hope to be back.

Slice of heaven!!

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for some charm and a great place to get away, the point should be at the top of your list. It is an amazing property that has it all! Charm, space, beauty and all the amenities you need to be comfortable. One of the most beautiful spots on the lake, as you truly have panoramic views of the sunrises and sunsets. They were amazing this past weekend!! Not to mention the lights of Ithaca at night as you relax in the hot tub. Camp is extremely comfortable and Don and Michele have done a great job thinking of everything to make your stay memorable. We enjoyed several attractions that Michele was kind enough to share with us on our anniversary weekend as well as simply watching the sailboats enjoying the last of summer. This is our second year staying with Michele and Don and we still haven't seen it all so will definitely be back to the Finger Lakes!!

Peaceful, Cayuga Lakeside Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Beautifully decorated, comfortable home with both indoor and outdoor spaces that our family thoroughly enjoyed. Owners and Property manager provided everything a family could need to have a great stay away from home. Enjoyed kayaking, paddle boarding , and soaks in the hot tub and napping in the hammocks by the lake. All of these things included with the rental property. Wonderful views through out the house and deck including peeks of local wildlife and water fowl. Highlights were Ithaca Farmers Market, day spent on the lake in a rental boat from Finger Lakes Boat Rentals, dinners at Aurora Inn and Hazelnut Kitchen, nearby falls at Robert Treman State Park, Taughannock Falls State Park, and Buttermilk Falls State Park. Also really enjoyed our arrival meal provided by Simmer Down, well worth the cost, and the lovely artwork throughout the home.

Private Lakefront Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Everything was perfect except for the rainy weather. My family had a great time relaxing and enjoying the lake. Boating, fishing, kayaking, water skiing, boat trips to wine tasting, restaurants and waterfalls, swimming, tubing, biking, etc.. The house was very nice as advertised and right sized for our family of seven. The best part is you are on your own isolated lakefront lot with total privacy...just my family and the lake.

Wonderful Week

  • 5 of 5

The Point provided a wonderful setting for a family vacation. Four adults, a tween, and a toddler had more than enough room to enjoy a beautiful week in July. The house itself had everything we needed and was comfortable and homey. Its proximity to the town park and nature preserve gave us a daily destination for our morning walk. We also used it as a base to explore Ithaca, Buttermilk Falls, Taughannock Falls, and the Sciencecenter. When we stayed at the lake, the kayaks and paddleboard were lots of fun. The views from the Point are amazing and we were fortunate to be here during the full moon. Taking photos of moonrise and moonset from the same location was unique! If we find ourselves travelling towards Cayuga Lake again, we would definitely want to stay at the Point.

Beautiful Home on the Lake

  • 5 of 5

The Point was beautiful and we had a wonderful weekend. The house had everything we needed, from kayaks to hammocks to kitchen supplies. It was very easy to get into Ithaca but far enough away to enjoy the privacy of the lake. The park was a short walk for the kids and meals on the deck made for a great evening. We will definitely look to return on our next trip!
