About Howie Wemyss

I've lived in the White Mountains full time since 1971, moving "north of the Notch" to Randolph in 2003. In 2006 my wife, Sue and I purchased the home we had seasonally rented for several years and became proud Randolph home owners and landlords. After many years of renting year round, we decided to renovate the attached apartment and rent only in the summer season via VRBO. We're both avid hikers, birders, mountain bikers and travelers with a keen love of the outdoors that we'd love to share with you when you stay in Randolph.

Howie Wemyss purchased this apartment in 2006

Why Howie Wemyss chose Randolph

Randolph Hill, where our home and apartment are located, is one of those amazing places in the White Mountains that is close enough to all you need for enjoying the outdoors, but far enough away from it all to be quiet, private and secluded. Shopping and commercial amenities are 15 - 45 minutes away, the hiking trails are 15 seconds away! I first looked at "Hill" properties 30 years ago in another life when I was renovating homes and looking for that perfect place with mountain views and southern exposure - and here we are finally living the dream. Stay here and you'll see!

What makes this apartment unique

If you love the quiet outdoors, want to be away from the crowds and right on the hiking trails, this is the vacation apartment you've been looking for. With a bit of a view to the mountains and located on dead end Randolph Hill Road, it's very quiet, peaceful and serene. You could be perfectly happy sitting on the sunny deck all day reading a book with the sounds of the birds for a backdrop, or step out the door onto the Short Circuit path to connect to the rest of the 100+ mile Randolph Mountain Club maintained hiking trail system. The night sky is absolutely amazing since we're far away from strong light sources - shooting stars, the Milky Way and passing satellites are all part of the show. We'll provide the local knowledge to get you to the places that will make this one of your most memorable vacations. Family attractions, scenic wonders, renowned outlet shopping - all within 60 minutes.

Nearby Gorham, NH (5 minutes drive) has many restaurant options when you're ready to dine out - and one special pub called "SAaLT". Jackson, NH (30 minutes drive) has more restaurants and pubs, shopping and scenery. North Conway, NH (45 minutes drive) has dozens of unique shops as well as brand name outlet shopping and, of course, more restaurants and pubs.

Guestbook comments from the owner

As the first guests, let me tell you how much we enjoyed staying in the apartment. It is so comfortable, cozy and well appointed. You have decorated it well from the bear hanging on the door to the lovely prints and collection of magazines and books, especially on the White Mountains. Meals on the porch overlooking the mountains were special. Thanks for sharing such a lovely place.

Another Great Visit to Short Circuit

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed another stay at this great apartment in the mountains. Love being able to put on our hiking boots and head right out the door. Everything was well cared for, including some new furnishings since our last stay. It was a hotter, humid week in August when we were there but keeping things closed up while we were out during the day and using ceiling and another fan worked great as needed. We are members of the RMC and greatly appreciate the numerous trails we have access to in this area. Enjoyed some local golf spots too, Hope to stay even longer next time. Janice

The apartment is well kept and well stocked. Secluded and quiet. Went on a long hike just out the door. Short drive to Mt Washington and other area activities. Would definitely stay here again. Had a wonderful time here.

Fantastic Vacation Getaway - Don't Hesitate On This One!

  • 5 of 5

Overall our week long experience was amazing. The apartment is built on to the main house with shared deck space, great views of Mt. Madison and Mt. Adams. Quick access to the Appalachia trailhead. Unfortunately we had only one opportunity to meet our hosts Howie and Sue, but they were super responsive and accommodating. Space was a great fit for us and our 3-year-old. For the data nerds out there, I got great LTE 40-50 Mbps/sec down with Verizon. The provided Wifi was problematic (1-5 Mbps/sec) but this was an issue with ISP, our hosts worked very hard to troubleshoot. Kudos to them, we would come back in an instant.

A wonderful mountain retreat - both clean and comfortable with lots of thoughtful conveniences.

If you like hiking, you can’t find a better location for getting out and exploring all that the White Mountains have to offer. Bring Fido along if you like and watch him swim happily in nearby Durand Lake or frolic in the fields of clover that skirt many of the numerous rivers of the national forest. Also a perfect getaway for writers in need of some inspiration or nature photographers or everyday folks out to see the many sights.

The White Mountains of New Hampshire have long been renowned for their scenic beauty. From the early 1800s travelers have been coming here for relaxation as well as recreation. With the arrival of the first railroad in nearby Gorham in the mid 1800s, tourism became, and is still, a major part of the economy. It's every bit as beautiful here today as it was in those early years.

Your vacation opportunities are as varied as you want them to be. Walking and hiking trails are right out the door, mountain biking is a short drive away, scenic drives are in every direction and can be from an hour to all day depending on your interests. We can suggest scenic loops of every description focusing on waterfalls, mountain views or moose watching. We also can tell you where the shopping options are from NH made products and handmade crafts to outlet shopping in brand name stores.

The Mt Washington Auto Road is hard to beat for an amazing trip above the treeline to the summit of the highest mountain in the Northeast. Drive yourself for a thrilling adventure or sit back on a guided tour and leave the driving to the talented driver/guides.

Our apartment is stocked with hiking guide books and local trail maps and we'll be happy to help you map out your hiking adventures while you're here - or equally happy to have you do your own exploring.
