About Howie Wemyss

I've lived in the White Mountains full time since 1971, moving "north of the Notch" to Randolph in 2003. In 2006 my wife, Sue and I purchased the home we had seasonally rented for several years and became proud Randolph home owners and landlords. After many years of renting year round, we decided to renovate the attached apartment and rent only in the summer season via VRBO. We're both avid hikers, birders, mountain bikers and travelers with a keen love of the outdoors that we'd love to share with you when you stay in Randolph.

Howie Wemyss purchased this apartment in 2006

Why Howie Wemyss chose White Mountains

Randolph Hill, where our home and apartment are located, is one of those amazing places in the White Mountains that is close enough to all you need for enjoying the outdoors, but far enough away from it all to be quiet, private and secluded. Shopping and commercial amenities are 15 - 45 minutes away, the hiking trails are 15 seconds away! I first looked at "Hill" properties 30 years ago in another life when I was renovating homes and looking for that perfect place with mountain views and southern exposure - and here we are finally living the dream. Stay here and you'll see!

What makes this apartment unique

If you love the quiet outdoors, want to be away from the crowds and right on the hiking trails, this is the vacation apartment you've been looking for. With a bit of a view to the mountains and located on dead end Randolph Hill Road, it's very quiet, peaceful and serene. You could be perfectly happy sitting on the sunny deck all day reading a book with the sounds of the birds for a backdrop, or step out the door onto the Short Circuit path to connect to the rest of the 100+ mile Randolph Mountain Club maintained hiking trail system. The night sky is absolutely amazing since we're far away from strong light sources - shooting stars, the Milky Way and passing satellites are all part of the show. We'll provide the local knowledge to get you to the places that will make this one of your most memorable vacations. Family attractions, scenic wonders, renowned outlet shopping - all within 60 minutes.

Nearby Gorham, NH (5 minutes drive) has many restaurant options when you're ready to dine out - and one special pub called "SAaLT". Jackson, NH (30 minutes drive) has more restaurants and pubs, shopping and scenery. North Conway, NH (45 minutes drive) has dozens of unique shops as well as brand name outlet shopping and, of course, more restaurants and pubs.

Guestbook comments from the owner

As the first guests, let me tell you how much we enjoyed staying in the apartment. It is so comfortable, cozy and well appointed. You have decorated it well from the bear hanging on the door to the lovely prints and collection of magazines and books, especially on the White Mountains. Meals on the porch overlooking the mountains were special. Thanks for sharing such a lovely place.

The White Mountains of New Hampshire have long been renowned for their scenic beauty. From the early 1800s travelers have been coming here for relaxation as well as recreation. With the arrival of the first railroad in nearby Gorham in the mid 1800s, tourism became, and is still, a major part of the economy. It's every bit as beautiful here today as it was in those early years.

Your vacation opportunities are as varied as you want them to be. Walking and hiking trails are right out the door, mountain biking is a short drive away, scenic drives are in every direction and can be from an hour to all day depending on your interests. We can suggest scenic loops of every description focusing on waterfalls, mountain views or moose watching. We also can tell you where the shopping options are from NH made products and handmade crafts to outlet shopping in brand name stores.

The Mt Washington Auto Road is hard to beat for an amazing trip above the treeline to the summit of the highest mountain in the Northeast. Drive yourself for a thrilling adventure or sit back on a guided tour and leave the driving to the talented driver/guides.

Our apartment is stocked with hiking guide books and local trail maps and we'll be happy to help you map out your hiking adventures while you're here - or equally happy to have you do your own exploring.

Perfectly Cozy

  • 5 of 5

My family had a wonderful stay at this adorable home. It is even cozier in person than the pictures could possibly capture. My little boys loved the trundle bed and my husband and I loved sitting on the deck in the evenings looking up at the night sky. The home is very warm and comfortable. The owners included everything we could ever need for a vacation: a stocked kitchen, cable TV, towels, sheets, and a playroom for the kids - complete with a chalkboard. Howie is a fabulous host! We are absolutely going to be making a return trip to the White Mountains but only when Howie's place is available for us!

The apartment is great! It is fully equipped, including linens, towels, and a fully equipped kitchen

  • 5 of 5

The apartment is very new, comfortable, light and open. Very quiet location in the woods with hiking trails literally beginning just outside the door. Great location, five minutes from Gorham for shopping and restaurants, and also close to Mt Washington Auto Road and Great Glen Trails for hiking. Also within reasonably short distance of Conway and North Conway for lots of shopping and the scenic railroad. Lots of things to do in the area for families, and also great location for tons of hikes in the White Mts. All in all just a wonderful place to spend some time away. The hosts, Howie and Sue, are very welcoming and congenial, and are happy to provide information about things to see and do in the area. I plan to return again soon.

Best deal in the area

  • 5 of 5

I have been traveling to the white mountains for 35 years for climbing, skiing, hiking etc... I have stayed in every hotel from North Conway to Gorham....short circuit is one of the best values I have found.

....5 minutes (maybe) from the Appalachia trail head...10-15 minutes from Wildcat and Pinkham....I have stayed at Howie and Sue' s a few times and I find it to be the perfect location for exploring the Whites ..

ideal base for exploring Randolph & Northern Peaks

  • 5 of 5

Sue & Howie's apartment was the ideal base for us. It is perfectly situated in the center of the wonderful RMC trail network. The apartment, the deck, the trails, and the quiet surrounding area were ideal for a few days of hiking and relaxation. It was a treat to be able to spend several days in an historic small town in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and the magazines and other local reading material added to our understanding of the area. The apartment is very comfortable and had everything we needed for our stay - including all kitchen essentials. We look forward to returning!

We Loved It !

  • 5 of 5

the apartment had everything we needed for our week stay in July. Very clean and modern with real "White Mountain.. North Country" charm. Quiet and peaceful, but easy to find... just minutes from Gorham and all the National Forest attractions. The apartment is very spacious with a big outdoor deck area with great views. the host, Howie and Sue are super nice and just a text away if needed.... but we never needed anything....the place was perfect...

we highly recommend

We had a wonderful stay in the White Mountains.

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Howie and Sue's. The apartment was equipped with everything we needed. It was clean and well maintained. The location was quiet and ideal for our hiking adventures. Sue had several hiking suggestions for us and Howie pointed us in the direction of some fine dining in Gorham. We even saw a woodchuck and several deer in the back yard! It was great.
