About owner/property manager

A happy family who loves the Hill Country and the River.

owner/property manager purchased this house in 2006

Why owner/property manager chose Hill Country

We were lucky to get this Little piece of undiscovered heaven in 2005.

We decided to try and rent our house for vacation rentals use in 2006 and were overwhelmed with how many people want to come to the hill country. Once renters arrived here they were more than surprised how awesome the water, trees and area are, just as we were.

What makes this house unique

Peacefulness, Ducks, floating on the dock, Relaxing on the Deck, Rope swing and Dave's Place

Heaven on Earth

  • 5 of 5

My family and I just spent 9 days at the Hightaway and have nothing but good things to say. The property was so gorgeous the photos really don't do it justice. The house was just as described, very clean and cute. We liked how the kid's room was separated from our room by a jack and jill bathroom. The beds were very comfortable.

Our children were so busy on the rope swing, canoe and river raft that they didn't watch TV for the whole trip. There was also a tire swing, swingset and picnic table. A couple of peacocks wandered around, too, and we got to see a turtle laying her eggs under the deck.

Although Center Point is a tiny town, they do have a couple restaurants worth going to. In fact, while we were at Dave's (whick is walking distance from the Hightaway), there was a photojournalist there from Texas Highways doing a story about it who took some photos of us for their magazine. Vicky's Burger's was also worth trying.

This is a magical, beautiful place and we wish we could have stayed forever.

Very outdated... Would not stay here again

  • 2 of 5

I hate to write a negative review, but it is needed. The folks we worked with to book the house seemed very nice, but their rental property needs work. If it wasn't for the awesome property and views, I would have given one star.

The house is very, very outdated and frankly, a bit dirty. The carpet is in very poor condition in the bedrooms - There were large stains in the carpet in one of the bedrooms that was alarming. The sheets in our room and the guest bedroom were dirty. Stains on the sheets that looked like mud? These sheets were cheap (which is totally fine for a river house) but they were old and in bad shape. One pair of sheets had two massive holes in it that they tried to stitch up... very disappointing. The couches in the living rooms are covered with stains which made us not want to sit down on them. We also killed a roach and scorpion inside the house during our stay. There were a few other things... but not worth mentioning.

The biggest issues - The smell. Wow. Very bad. We had to go to the store to get spray and candles and even then, the smell was intense. Smelled like mildew? Not sure but if you are sensitive to smells, beware of staying here. I am highly allergic to a large variety of molds, and my allergies were really bothering me on day two of our stay. Not sure if that was related to the house, but makes me wonder.

House layout - Worth mentioning because it says NO WHERE in the rental add. The third bedroom is downstairs and you can only access by exterior entrance. The smell in this room was also very bad. We had to rewash the sheets because it had settled in the sheets as well. This bedroom has no windows, is like a bunker, and is very dark. I would not put children down here nor elderly folks because it is not easily accessible.

The grounds/property did make up for the stay as it is right on the river. Large yard and a good view.

Overall, the house is okay if the owners were not planning on renting out on a site like this. It needs work to be a legit rental property or they need to lower the price. Nice people, but would not stay here again.

Beautiful large riverfront. Fair home.

  • 2 of 5

The river area is beautiful with large trees and beautiful riverfront. Lots of water toys were available (tubes, life jackets, fishing equipment) and the river is deep in this area. There were 2 canoes and a kayak (well used but still usable most of the seats in the canoes are broken). Three charcoal grills were available but none was in very good condition. The house is unique. It was clean and fairly well stocked with kitchen supplies. If you are looking for fun on the river this place will work. If you are looking for a nice home to stay in you may be a little disappointed. The bed linens and few towels were not luxurious. The floors are uneven and the wood look laminate flooring has lots of gaps. To get into the downstairs apartment, you have to go outside then down the stairs and enter through a rough shed type storage area and into a separate locking door - the only entrance/exit (fire code?). It is dark and a little musty with no windows, poor lighting and dark colored walls and a window unit type air-conditioner. Whoever stays in this depressing space is totally separate from the ones who stay in the main house. There are no inside stairs. It does have a bathroom, refrigerator and kitchenette. There were several things that needed repairs or replacement and that was a little disconcerting. I think the property owner will probably fix these things - we did not contact him during our stay. There are only 4 dining chairs. The trail down to the river area is a little steep and there was a note asking renters not to drive down, so anyone with trouble walking would not be able to enjoy much river front activity. The access to the upper house is flat with no steps, but it might be hard to navigate a wheelchair into the bedroom and bath. Young children would need LOTS of close supervision here. We very much enjoyed the river and good times with family (young adult kids). The front deck is lovely. We got to sit out one night and watch fireflies and the next night hearing rain and seeing lightning over the hills. The ducks made rounds every morning and visited with us while we had a leisurely breakfast on the deck. Overall we had a very nice three days at the Hightaway.

Loved it!!

  • 5 of 5

We had a blast. The Pictures Dont do It Justice. We jumped off the rope swing even my 5 year old did it. We fished total 2 turtles 10 perch or more 5 or 6 catfish. We bar b qued the whole time we were there. It was just amazing. We definitely plan on goin back next year. I couldn't get my kids to come in side. They loved the hammock, tire swing, and swing sets. We went on the boats a few times . All around the best vacation I've ever been on . Can't wait to go again. The owner was always nice and answered every question I had. The house was clean and cool and smelt good. They provided chairs, tables, life jackets, fishing poles, and a tackle box. The area was very quiet and relaxing. We loved waking up and goin to the upstairs deck and just look at nature, and the Ducks were usually there to meet us. The ducks are nice my kids kept chasing them and they just ran away. We found 2 duck eggs while there.

Wonderful weekend on the river

  • 5 of 5

Our family enjoyed a wonderful weekend of river fun.The property was clean and comfortable with great access to the river. The kitchen was well stocked and had plenty of room for the cooks in the family. Between canoeing, kayaking, jumping off the rope swing and enjoying the floating dock there was never a dull moment. The grandkids loved seeing the ducks and turtles and in the evening everyone enjoyed winding down around the fire pit and roasting marshmallows. We look forward to returning soon!

Relaxing Weekend

  • 5 of 5

Just like what others posted on their reviews, the pictures do not do this place justice. The house was great other than a few "creaks" in the flooring but other than that, my family had a great time and could not have asked for a better place to enjoy a very relaxing weekend stay. With the river a short walk down the hill, this is where we ate and spent all of our time. On Saturday, our kids started on the rope swing around 10 am and didn't get out of the water until 6 pm with the occasional breaks to eat. The canoes and kayak were excellent accessories for their enjoyment. We did fish a little bit and caught a few little perch. There is lots of room down by the river for the children to play games, use the swing set, throw washers or use the tire swing. The BBQ pits were great as they were close to the river and were used for every meal. The house was very clean upon our arrival and the sleeping quarters were great. We actually slept in the downstairs room which had a queen bed along with 2 bunk beds, a sofa, bathroom, and refrigerator. This room was great as with little ones, it kept them from having to travel up the stairs. The outdoor patio deck was great for visiting with friends once the 10 pm quiet time came upon us. We even had some entertainment as the local fire department was sponsoring a concert across the river and we could hear the music loud and clear. Quite honestly, other than your personal items, this place was fully stocked. They had life jackets, innertubes, and fishing poles to use. We did bring our own but it was great seeing that the owner took care of these needs in case someone were to forget or just wanted to experience these activities. Our overall experience was an excellent one and without hesitation would I highly recommend renting this place from Stephen Hight as we will continue to do business with him for years to come. Thanks Stephen for a great memorable experience!
