Our first visit to Cloudcroft was in 2004. We had recently moved to El Paso from Oregon and had heard that Cloudcroft, just a short drive away, had forests like we enjoyed in Oregon. We decided to take a camping trip with our one-year old boy and our dog. After a great campfire cookout, we called it a night. At about 2:00 am, we heard our dog barking and opened the tent to quiet her. Instead we found ourselves next to a large black bear. We managed to scare the bear away, but decided against another night sleeping with just tent fabric between a bear and myself. We went into town the next day to look for a rental cabin. While we were waiting for the cabin, we drove around Cloudcroft and completely fell in love with the village and the forest. We saw some property for sale that backed into the National Forest and bought it the same day. A year later we began construction on a log home and named it Bear Ridge Log Home. We had the bear paw carvings included in the design in memory of our bear.
Kristine purchased this Cabin in 2005
Why Kristine chose Cloudcroft
A handcrafted log home is a home built with full round logs using many handheld tools such as axes, chisels and scribers. It captures the authenticity of log homes built many years ago. Log homes usually fall into two categories, milled (or manufactured) and Handcrafted. With a milled homes mechanized high-speed woodworking machinery are used to precut uniform logs. The logs are usually no more than 8 in. in diameter and 12 ft. long. With a handcrafted log home logs will vary in size and shape and are limited only by the trees. Bear Ridge log home is a Handcrafted log home built by three expert carvers at Pioneer Log Homes. It uses an average of 16 in diameter logs some over 35 ft long, and integrates many of the unique characteristics of the logs in the home. The artistic logs, benches, front arch, and bear paws were part of the creative woodworking skill of the carvers. There is no other home designed like it.

Great home in a great location. Bathrooms could both be improved.
Heaven on Earth
Great time with family. I am so glad I stepped up on this cabin. It was well worth it. Front door was a little tough to open. Outside of that, it was complete bliss
Nice cabin, but a number of problems that made it more work than a vacation
The cabin was beautiful and very well built. We enjoyed our stay except for a number of problems that made it a bit more work than the relaxing time we had hoped for.
The fireplace box had to be cleaned before we could use it, the outdoor grill was very dirty, so we decided against using it at all, the front door was sticking and nearly impossible for a grown man to open and close, and the hot tub breaker switch (inside and downstairs) had to be flipped before each use as instructed on the screen.
The perfect mountain home
This home adds the perfect touch to your mountain vacation. What could be better than staying at a log cabin 9,000 feet above sea level. The loft is great for the kids with toys ready to be played with. And there is nothing like that morning cup of coffee looking through large windows and seeing deer walk by. The home is peaceful and just a block away from quaint downtown Cloudcroft.
We were surprised when we arrived at the cabin to see how close together all the houses are in this area as our primary goal was quiet and cooler temperatures, but our fears were unfounded. The cabin and the neighborhood were amazingly quiet and serene.
The cabin was beautiful and we loved reading about how it came to be and how it was constructed. Being able to walk out the back door and go to the left or right on the Osha Trail was our very favorite thing! We saw deer almost every single day, which for us city dwellers, never ceased to be a wonderful experience.
The different levels of the cabin gave us plenty of space to spread out and we had everything we needed. (The driveway and the surrounding streets are steep and gravelly, so I would not take a puny car!)
An amazing experience!
Great place for a family. Close to town but the forest is right out the back door.
We loved it. We've rented several places in Cloudcroft over the years and this was our favorite.

Enjoy the variety of wildlife including deer, wild turkeys, elk, cougar, eagles, squirrels, coyotes, bear, hawks, porcupines, or foxes.
Take a day trip to White Sands National Monument, Ruidoso, Ski Apache, Valley of Fires, Billy the Kid Country (Lincoln), Alamogordoç—´ Space History Museum, National Solar Observatory, or Carlsbad Caverns National Park.
Cloudcroft has a variety of events for visitors including Arts and Crafts Fairs, Art classes, Holiday events, Murder Mystery parties, Blue Grass festivals, Rodeos, Golf Tournaments, and Hang Gliding Fly-ins.
Cloudcroft New Mexico is located on U.S. Hwy. 82 and is easily accessible from both east and west. The western approach from Alamogordo (north of El Paso, Texas, on U.S Hwy 54) is a steep 16 mile climb of nearly 5,000 vertical feet that takes travelers through a variety of climate zones. The charming mountain village of Cloudcroft owes its existence to the beauty that surrounds it. In 1898, an El Paso-Northeastern Railroad crew was laying out the route for the famous Cloud Climbing Railroad and stopped to rest on the summit of the Sacramento Mountains.
Standing under the tall, cool pines, the crew looked west to the vibrant slash of Whites Sands almost 5,000 feet below and picked their resting place as the site of the railroadç—´ lodge. Impressed by the white clouds slipping by at almost ground level, it was a young Englishman in the party who chose the name of Cloudcroft, meaning a cloud in a field.
Beautiful scenery and spectacular unspoiled vistas are encountered at every turn of the highway. In particular, the view from the overlook near New Mexicoç—´ only tunnel and the graceful old wooden Mexican Canyon trestle that nestles in a canyon just outside of the village should not be missed. This much photographed remnant of the old logging and excursion railroad has come to be a kind of unofficial symbol of Cloudcroft.
High mountain meadows and cool air are a welcome relief from the surrounding desert on either approach. Warm summer days are sprinkled with mountain showers that come and go quickly but which leave behind a variety of wildflowers that blanket the meadow and line the roads. Summer temperatures reach the upper 70ç—´ but the nighttime lows remain in the cool 40ç—´ and 50ç—´.
Cloudcroft is a quiet, relaxing and scenic village with year round activities. The Chamber hosts a full calendar of events that attract thousands and thousands of visitors annually. With four lovely seasons and an old country way of life Cloudcroft has something for everyone and we will make you feel right at home.
