A true log cabin that sits right on the lake and over looks the beautiful Smokey Mountains. Make our house your home for a week and feel completely at home. The house was completely renovated in 2006. We sit right on the lake and have the most amazing view. This house was the first house to be built on Thunderbird Mountain in 1962. Once you stay here, you will never want to leave. It is a private, secluded lake. Sit on the dock and catch a few trout or just take a relaxing nap. There are only a handful of Lakes left in the country that are rated this clean and we want to keep our lake one of them. This lake is clean and clear, from our deck you can see at least 10 feet down into the water. There is a view of the lake from every window. It is 14 steps to the lake. Everything from the sheets to the large DVD collection is first rate.
At night you can enjoy the huge deck and relax under a blanket of stars. The deck is decorated with Teak Furniture and a Great Big Teak Bar. If you are looking for a place to enjoy quiet, sun and relaxation, this is the home to rent. From our deck you will be looking at a beautiful lake, with the Smokey Mountains in the background. To the right looking across the lake there’s a nest with two bald Eagles 🦅. The movie Nell was filmed on this lake, as was The Clearing.
Check out water skiing on Lake Santeetlah.

About Scott Mitchell
Scott and Katie consider this cabin their Diamond in the Rough. Our cabin was built in 1963 and completely renovated in 2005. It was the very first property developed on Thunderbird Mountain. The builder of the original home lives right across the Lake. We looked for a Lake House for years before discovering the secret of Lake Santeetlah. It was Love at First Site and we love sharing this amazing piece of HEAVEN. We know you will enjoy it as much as we do.
Scott Mitchell purchased this House in 2001
Why Scott Mitchell chose Yellow Creek
We have never seen a Lake this beautiful. Looking down from our deck you can see at least 10 feet into the water. Our view is Unbeatable, and will never be altered. Only 20% of the lake is able to be built on, the remaining 80% is Natural Forest. When you wake up in the morning, go get a cup of coffee and sit on the huge deck. If your lucky you may see one fishing boat go by, but most likely you will see A Bald Eagle. We love that there is no Movie Theatre, No Mall, and No Walmart.
What makes this House unique
Don't be surprized if you see a Bald Eagle fly by or a Beaver swim next to your boat. We love our Raccoon families that come by from time to time. You truly feel transported to a different world. The lake never gets crowded or rough. You can sit on our huge deck in the morning and watch the smoke rise from the water to display a single canoe quietly floating across the lake. It is as close to Heaven as you can get.

Come to this cabin if you need to relax....
My husband and I chose the perfect place for a weekend getaway. The view to the lake and the mountains from the front porch is spectacular! The weather was a little cool but that did not stop me from staying on the porch to relax. Since there were just the two of us, we stayed on the main floor and it was very comfortable. The house also offers plenty of bedroom spaces in the basement and upstairs. This house is perfect for those who need some tranquil space to have a break from the hustle of busy work and city living. Scott and Katie (house owners) were a delight to work with.
We had a wonderful Thanksgiving getaway at the Mitchell Lake Cabin. The cabin was suitable for our family, and were were comfortable. We love being outdoors so the deck was ideal for dining, and relaxing with a fire in the evening. The kitchen had everything we needed. The only reason I only gave 4 stars is because we had small children (crawlers) and the staircase to the lower level is open and unsafe for small children, we took a baby gate as we knew from the pictures there were staircases, but we're unprepared for the opening from the main floor to the lower level. (We built a barricade out of suitcases which worked well.) The location is ideal if you want to getaway from all the hustle and bustle of a busy tourist town, and we loved that aspect!!!! We would definitely consider renting this cabin again!!!
I'm so sorry Christy. We will be more attentive to that issue. We appreciate your constructive critisim.
August in Santeelah
We had a tremendous week at the Mitchell house! The exposure on the lake was the best., lots of sun and clear waters. The house was very comfortable and decorated with unique furnishings- very comfortable. The large deck is a super advantage to the house. We ate there a lot- sometimes it was a little too hot and we ate indoors. There were tons of dvds for rainy days, but since we had good weather, we did not watch any. My family visited the nearby Wehrloom Honey. The grandson saw bees behind glass and visited their goats, chickens and a very large tortoise. https://www.facebook.com/wehrloomhoney/ We have our own boat we were able to enjoy having the boat docked at the house. There are plenty of floats and water toys to enjoy. We ate at the Hub in Robbinsville and enjoyed the food there. The house worked fine for two couples. There was a bathroom for the bedroom upstairs and for the bedroom on the main floor. We did not use the basement bedroom. It would be best for nimble young people who could easily climb stairs to get to the main floor bathroom. The owners were very friendly and rsponded to questions quickly. There was a very clean Pac N play for the infant, too. Thanks to the Mitchell's for a wonderful week and thanks for allowing us to have our little dog with us.
Comfort and beauty all in one
The cabin had the most incredible views of the mountains and the lake. The lake was so clean and always like glass. If you are looking for log cabin type house and rustic this is it. If you want to site see you are only 1hour and a half from Asheville NC and Pidgeon Forge TN. I highly recommend renting this cabin and this location
Main corner support for deck leaning toward lake. Dock teathered to deck support. Light switches hot to touch and missing ceiling fans. No handrails down steep stairs to musty basement bedroom. Deck furniture falling apart and full of splinters. No maintence on deck boards
We want everyone that stays in our lakehouse to love it as much as we do. It is our sanctuary and so we want to make sure it is in perfect condition for all. The deck and furniture is being replaced and tended to but by no means is it a safety hazard. We will look into these issues to ensure a positive experience for our renters.
All that it claims to be!
We had a great time at this house. The house is very comfortable and in fine shape. The pictures of the house/lake/property are all accurate. The only reason i knocked a star off was because the pictures don't show the lower bedroom which is essentially a sort of musty basement. Not a huge deal, but the pictures on this site seem to not show it anywhere which is slightly shady.
We had one very minor issue (no wifi password) and the owner was very speedy to correct it, which is always appreciated.
Having a canoe to use was an awesome perk. We explored all over the lake in it. The dock is great for hanging out on and the deck is fantastic! It's huge and the view is incredible, i can't stress that part enough. Also, a flying squirrel was living in the birdhouse west side of the deck, which is always fun to see.
If you choose to leave the comfort of the property and lake, things to do in the area are plentiful. Quick and easy drives can take you to excellent creeks to play in, waterfalls to view, and beautiful old growth forests to hike in.
We stayed here for 5 nights in the summer and I think we only saw 15 boats (maybe) and half of those were canoes/kayaks. It's a truly tranquil setting.
At the time of writing this (2014) the county that the house is in is the only dry county in all of NC. If you like alcohol, bring it in. If you come from the west, it's worth the drive to the east to get your hands on some of the amazing NC craft beer.
The only other small thing was that we didn't know what to do with the trash. I think the info folder for the house could use a slight update to correct this, but that's an easy fix.
We would (and probably will) rent this house again in the future.
Oh, and the furniture is really pretty.
Joyce Kilmer National Park is 20 minutes away. Weirlom Honey- Make Honey wine and do tastings
