About Jen Hsieh
I'm a poster child for globalization. I lived in Taiwan, US, Canada, and now I call Australia home. I have developed a serious case of wanderlust, the symptoms included insatiable desire to see and experience new places, and meet the locals. So far it has taken me to Spain, Syria, Russia, Singapore, Portugal, Mexico, France, Morocco, Argentina, Italy, Oman, Germany, Turkey, Brazil, Austria, United Arab Emirates, Netherlands, UK, Jordan, Peru, Switzerland, New Zealand, Thailand, etc., etc.. Next on my must-visit list: Madagascar, Qatar, South Africa, Chile, and Iran. Being a seasoned traveller, I truly understand what it takes to have a great trip and an unforgettable experience. I believe people are big part of the journey. And nothing beats meeting a local, seeing a place from their eyes, and feeling the passion they have for their city. I look forward to hosting you and sharing with you the city I have been calling home. Welcome to Sydney.
Why Jen Hsieh chose Birchgrove
This apartment was our home -- such that we have painstakingly renovated every square inch of the property for living, and not just for show. This is a place with warmth (and style!), and it devoid the sterile, clinical-ness of commercial properties. Come, live like a local, let this be your home during your travels.

Great location, so close to ferries and Darling Street.
Thanks Ann! I am glad you enjoyed your stay. It was a pleasure to host you and we hope to welcome you back soon!
Apart from several flights of stairs- the lovely apartment waiting for you is clean, bright and nice
Great location to cafes, parks and stunning walks.
2 bed holiday rental
I recently stayed in this Birchgrove 2 bed flat. The location was great and the 2 bed perfectly suited my needs. Jen the host was very amenable and always ready to help.
I would happily stay here again if I return.
Loved our stay here. Jen was a delightful host.
Thank you! It was wonderful to have you and your friends at the apartment. We hope you will come back and visit us soon!
Great top floor balcony with pair of Lorikeets!
Nice comfortable condo with your own pair of Lorikeets every morning outside the balcony door. They are so cute! Nice view of the city at night in the distance. To get the view it is a 6 flight walk up.
Condo is located in the Balmain neighborhood with a variety of good restaurant within easy walking distance on Darling Street. Condo is a few blocks from the ferry or take Uber for about $22 to main areas.
Washer/Dryer combo is a little tricky to dry, so do as many Australian's do and hang out your clothes to dry. Beds were very comfortable. Bath towels were very rough.
Host Jen was always available to answer a couple of questions. We enjoyed our stay.
Thanks Jerry, it was lovely to have you at the apartment.
Yes the birds are absolutely adorable. This pair of birds have been visiting us for the past 10yrs, we see them as our de-facto pet. :)
For guests who are reading this review, in case there is any confusion:
- The building is a small boutique apartment with only 12 units located on two sides of the building. The staircase crisscross across the two sides to reach level 3 (our apartment), hence the 6 sets of small stairs with 7 steps in each set.
- We actively and consciously practice sustainable living to protect our environment/Australia. Instead of clothes dryer, which uses additional resource and creates higher footprint, we hang linens and towels under the sun to dry (incidentally it is also an Aussie norm to utilize the bright sun). The upside of this practice, besides naturally dried laundry, is the sun kissed smell and disinfected quality of the towels and linens. Unfortunately, the downside of sun drying is stiffer towels -- as they are not run through the dryer with fabric softener and dryer sheets (yes, it also means less chemicals and allergens). For that we do apologize and we hope for your understanding from our explanation. We are doing our bit for the environment, and we hope you can help us too!
Great location, flat as described. Loved the flat.
The condo is wonderfully located in Balmain – a quick 2mins walk to Darling St, packed with pubs, restaurants, cafes, boutique shops, etc. Bus stops are only one block away and go directly into centre of the City in about 10mins. One block the other way, the ferries stop at Thames St Wharf and can take you directly into Circular Quay, Sydney Opera House. I stayed here for three weeks (for work), the apartment is clean, bright, and has all the amenities needed for a good business stay. Nevertheless, I can also see it to be good for holiday stay. The convenience and setup of this place are much better than other short term homes, and definitely outweighs a hotel accommodation. I highly recommend it, and will be back again without a doubt.
Thank you for staying with us! I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed your stay (and our new decor setup). We would love to welcome you back again - for both pleasure and work!
Balmain was one of the earliest Sydney suburbs to be settled by Europeans, becoming an industrial hub and a major Sydney port, with shipbuilding, engineering, and coal mining taking off in the late 1800s. A combination of its working class roots, an influx of immigrants in the 1950s and gentrification of the 1960s -- “Once a tough, working-class neighborhood, Balmain now rivals Paddington [and Surrey Hill] in Victorian-era desirability – with the added advantage of being surrounded by water and city-bound ferries.” (Lonely Plant 2018). Some of Australia's best-known writers, actors, film directors, musicians, and artists call Balmain home.
Darling St traverses the spine of Balmain’s peninsula, and it is packed with boutique shops, cafes, restaurants, and pubs. These have added charms to Balmain with a village-like feel, especially on the weekends. Balmain’s frangipani-scented streets contain dozens of historically significant buildings, it makes a wonderful walk strolling through the neighborhood.
