As featured in the February edition of MN Monthly. Cottage Caim is a sanctuary nestled on the shores of Lake Superior, situated in intimate comfort with only walls of glass and a private beach between breaking waves and your stand alone, compact home. Fully accessible .Only five years old and architecturally designed, it embodies a warm Scandinavian modern sensibility. We are a quick 13 miles to Grand Marais with its restaurants, arts, North House Folks School and Arts Colony, only 8 miles from the Lutsen Mountain ski hill, and about four miles to Cascade State park and the cross country ski trails. The lower level tile floors are radiant heat, and a wood burning stove provides ambiance. The upstairs sleeping loft has a built in queen and two XL twin beds, and within the living area below is a very comfortable queen sleeper. Note there is no door between sleeping areas. The main floor bath has an open shower with a pebble floor. The entire main floor is accessible to a walker/wheel chair. Not suitable for large groups - max of 4, not the right place for small kids (babies ok). The full but compact kitchen has all the elements (including condiments and many staples) and there is an outdoor gas grill for your use. The table on the main floor only seats four comfortably, but there is a large outdoor dining table as well. Caim is a Gaelic term that means "a sanctuary; an invisible circle of protection, drawn around the body with the hand, to remind one of being safe and loved, even in the darkest times". Professionally and immaculately cleaned and maintained. New summer of 2018 - outdoor kitchen and bar under hand made timber frame. Contact owner if there are days you are interested that are blocked. We typically only make Cottage Caim available when we are not going to be next door, so tend to have to block dates out ahead until we figure out our family schedule.

About Mary Maurice
Built Cottage Caim in 2012, and used it as our primary North Shore vacation home until we were able to complete our home next door in 2015. We are now pleased to share Cottage Caim with friends and family. We have a 15 year old son and Bernese Mountain Dog who enjoy the place as much as we do. We love to hike, watch birds (and have many feeders!) kayak, and simply watch the waves and the ever changing seasons. We are very committed to preserving the natural environment, and have low impact rain gardens with native plants.
Mary Maurice purchased this Cottage in 2000
Why Mary Maurice chose Lutsen
From the review of a recent guest "What an amazing place to stay. You have 4 70+ inch TVs viewing the greatest show on earth, Lake Superior. The pictures don't do it justice, it is the most mystic, gorgeous place I've ever stayed on the lake." Would highly recommend to anyone coming to the area. are deeply attached to this property, and bought it with a couple old cabins on it (one of which is on the property still just up the shore) to build a place to retire and entertain/enjoy until that time. Everything we have done we have done with the eye to age in place and ultimately pass on to the next generation. We concurrently designed and planned the two cabins with the help of a top architect, and spared no expense in the construction. We love the grove or old growth cedars in which the cottage stands - and even designed a window under the stairs to be able to continue to enjoy the 'hugging cedars' behind the property.
What makes this Cottage unique
When you walk in you will be astonished by the walls of glass that make you feel as if you are on a ship, the high end furnishing, architectural design that embraces 'North Shore Modern'. It's a sanctuary for our family and friends, and we invite you to enjoy this and claim it as your own. Caim is a Gaelic term that means "a sanctuary; an invisible circle of protection, drawn around the body with the hand, to remind one of being safe and loved, even in the darkest times".

A gorgeous place and perfect location. We couldn't have asked for a better place to celebrate a 50th birthday. The cottage is everything it promises and more gorgeous than the photos. Location is perfect to access everything the North Shore has to offer. Great hikes nearby, Grand Marais a short drive, etc. You won't be disappointed! We will be back!
So glad to host you and your group Moira, and look forward to you coming again! We are grateful to you and other guests who make Caim the place to go for big events and special get-aways, and we are glad you noticed all the little touches that make it your own sanctuary. Mary
Cottage Caim is 5-star magic!
I hosted a 35-year reunion at Cottage Caim for my college roommates. My friends reside in the beautiful vistas of Colorado and Idaho, and the gorgeous Cottage Caim setting with awe-inspiring Lake Superior at the doorstep exceeded our expectations. The cottage has an intimate and magical feel, surrounding you with sunset views of the lake from sitting rocks on the shore, deck and living area viewing or watching picturesque sunrises through huge windows from the comfort of a bed! So much beauty and serenity to behold from the perfectly-sized home away from home.
Mary is an impressive host. Knowing it was a reunion, she recommended activities for the weekend ranging from North Shore hikes to attending a North House Folk School community celebration in Grand Marais to hanging out over coffee and breakfast in the well-appointed cottage. The kitchen has everything required to prepare a meal. Mary's knowledge of the area and enthusiasm to share it was invaluable to our memorable weekend.
I highly recommend this awesome host and location. I can't wait to return and am looking forward to introducing family and friends to Mary and the magic that is Cottage Caim.
Perfect Lake Superior Getaway!
Absolutely amazing! Quiet, calming and centering environment! Can't wait to come back!
This place was amazing! The views are stunning. The property was so clean, impeccably maintained and simply incredible. Mary is a gracious, kind and helpful host. I strongly recommend this property. Wow, is the best word for it
Stunning Waterfront Retreat
This is an amazing place. When you walk in the front door, it feels like you are right on the water. There is a view of Lake Superior from almost anywhere in the house. I stayed here with my sister and my 84 year-old mother. My mother slept on the downstairs hide-a-bed and was very comfortable, but you can't beat the views from the loft!. We all enjoyed the tasteful design of the space and were speculating as to whether there was an architect or interior designer in the family. We were fortunate and had beautiful fall weather and colors while we were here, but this would be a great retreat regardless of the weather. The kitchen is compact, but functional. We enjoyed cooking in it. The owner, Mary Maurice, was helpful and responded promptly to all inquiries. She also offered good suggestions for things to do in the area that would be suitable for our group. Great retreat! We hope to visit again.
Beautiful, updated cabin w/stunning lakeshore views!
Had an amazing experience at Cottage Caim! The cabin was located right on the shores of Lake Superior with far enough distance from the main road & neighboring cabins. Although right next to the main, larger cabin - the owners were never present so there was complete privacy. It was very calm and relaxing being so close to the water. Also very centrally located to local attractions - Lutsen Ski Resort, Temperance River & Cascade Falls, and a short distance to Grand Marais. The inside cabin was beautiful, updated w/large windows for a complete view. It was very clean and maintained well with many basic amenities provided. Mary was easily accessible and had answers to all questions! Cottage Caim is a wonderful place for a girl's weekend - may definitely return in the future!
