Dirty-not fit for short term rentals
Property was not fit for a short term rental. We had to clean the kitchen-including dirty dishes . Paper towels were the hand towels. No screens on windows-it was a very hot weekend. Spiders and spider webs every where. Ants all over the kitchen and upstairs bathroom. Only one shower-the master suite had some weird tub thing-that I doubt worked-though we didn't try it. The coffee table had a very heavy marble top on it. We moved it to try to sleep on the pull out couch in the living room-where it was cooler. It left surface scratches on the floor when we moved it and they charged us 200$ for the scratches. They only had one key though they offered to make more when we inquired and went to Fred Meyer and bought some hand towels. Just a weird, dirty, insect ridden set up-and not fit for a short term rental. Lastly the only shower didn't have complete window coverings and you could see directly into the neighbors kitchen..as they could see directly into the bathroom. The house was for sale so doubt they will fix anything. Miserable stay.
Mark's house was perfect for our needs - lots of space and great location. He was a great host as well, communicative and happy to recommend places for our group to visit.
The house doesn't have tons of amenities but in a city as amazing as Portland, you won't need them!
Quirky, Unpleasant, and Misrepresented
I was getting married and wanted a nice place for my family to stay while they visit me for the ceremony.
When we arrived the house was dark and cold, and all the decorations, rugs, and plants shown in the photos were put away and there were cleaning supplies left out in the front porch. My family was not happy. The house was in disrepair, unclean, the fridge was grimy with food left over. There were no cooking implements. One of the beds was a 4-inch single mattress pad shoved in the closet, the other was a twin size futon. There were no sheets or pillowcases for either of these beds.
The worst part about it was that the announcement said 2.5 baths. Which by any standards means 3 toilets and two showers. There were only 2 toilets. One shower was actually a bathtub in the middle of the top floor room which had a broken shower head, therefore unusable. So in reality it was 1.5 baths.
We complained to the owner. He showed up right away, and told me that the one half bathroom was because of a sink in the bedroom. So is it a bedroom or a bathroom? He brought us extra sheets and towels upon request but they were really old, beaded, and didn't smell fresh.
After further complaints, the owner tried to accomodate us by opening up the Mother in Law section, which was previously closed, locked, and off limits. This gave us an extra bathroom and an extra bed. That made the announcement accurate as with the mother in law section opened up there were 2.5 baths. The owner then tried to charge me an extra $80 for cleaning the mother in law suite, when the house itself really wasn't very clean.
My sister and her family arrived and they were so put off they decided to get a hotel. So the house was barely used. My mother and father didnt want to stay either so I put them up in my house and cancelled the final night, which the owner collected $180 in cash outside of VRBO because he "preferred" it that way. He did return the money, however he pocketed $50 of it because of the "cancellation".
I offered to give him feedback when i met with the owner a final time. I told him that my family was unhappy and offered constructive criticism as to how he could have made our stay more pleasant, and maybe for the next guests. He just looked at me with a blank stare and then asked me to write a good review.
Overall a very unpleasant experience for me and my family to deal with during my wedding.
