Upon arrival we had issues with insects that required an exterminator, then it took a couple days to get the cable & WiFi to work, but the office was very cooperative. It was quite cold & the bathroom has no heat source, so that was a challenge. Unfortunately the house sits very low & the new dunes are very high with no walkway or trail, so you can’t see over them & you have to crawl over the dunes to get to the beach.
Overall it’s a nice location but we had some issues.
Hello Robert, Happy New Year. Thank you for taking the time to leave your review. I would like to take this time to apologize for the delay with the cable and wifi and the heat outage in the bathroom of the property. Thank you for your kind words about our office staff - we greatly appreciate that as we pride ourself on guest relations.I would like to apologize for the new dunes, fortunately, our little island is finally coming back together after the devastation from hurricane Matthew. Again, thank you for your review, Robert. We hope to SEA you on your next vacation...life is Better at the Beach.
house smelt musty, needs a little tlc, we sprayed room deodorant, bed slept very well, nice bathroom, kitchen set up is very neat, may come back again...

Comfortable, perfect location for walking to everything!
We (a couple) stayed here for a week with our dog, and had a great time! Though it could definitely stand some updating, the house is really cute. It felt like staying at Grandma's beach house! Not only is it right on the beach and allows pets, it's within walking distance to the park, farmer's market, shopping and restaurants! (Beach stores, thrift stores, Food Lion, Pepperoni Grill, the Flying Pig coffee shop and more plus Beana's Kitchen - very busy, but a great place for takeout breakfast from here! We called in our orders and they called us back when they were ready to be picked up!)
- A wide back deck open to the sun, from which we saw pods of dolphins in the ocean!
- A stunning view of the ocean through the windows from inside.
- A natural yard with nesting sea birds, awash with Gaillardia in full bloom.
- An extremely comfortable king-sized mattress.
- A convenient outdoor shower/foot sprayers for rinsing off sand (note not enclosed/private).
- Hot water, shower, A/C, TV, DVD player all worked great! The power did go out for a bit one day, but that was quickly resolved by the property manager, Better Beach Rentals, who was very responsive and helpful with this and another minor issue we had due to a miscommunication.
- The streets across from the house are perfect for morning/evening dog walks, with a little canal and natural areas. (Although a passerby told us to watch out for alligators!)
Note that during our stay, the home was as clean as it could be, and we didn't see any mold or bugs. We didn't use the oven, but the stove burners, microwave, toaster and coffee machine worked fine. The only con that affected us was, the toilet does need to be fitted to the floor, as it rocks when you sit on it. If their handling of our stay is any indication, the property manager will likely have that fixed soon if not already.
If you're a couple who is not picky about looks/perfection, but are looking for an affordable, comfortable place to crash on Oak Island, with your pooch, next to the ocean, and within walking distance to everything you need(!), I do recommend Spoils of Victory.
Run-down, very poor condition, property
I can not begin to imagine anyone thinking this property was "charming". It is run-down, the windows don't fit so the A/C is dripping moisture from the register from the humidity. Mold in the shower, toilet moves, shower leaks, and if I can I will post pictures of the ancient stove and rusted out outside light, and others. The reviews for this property and this company will tell it all. I have pictures to post showing the condition. When I contacted Better Beach Rentals, they just said "well, the property is old". Old is one thing; unkept since it was built is another. The bathroom floor if not addressed will rot and someone will fall through. They will have a lawsuit on their hands from the mold in A/C duct work. The blinds move from the windows not being able to close all the way because they are so wrotten.
Location, location, location
Yes, you are right on the beach. BUT, the house is set back and low so you have a limited view. That's as positive as I can be. Owners need to stop buying junky decor and put their money to fixing up the place. Simple beds for the mattresses instead of the shin splitting metal frames would be a start. Don't get me started on all the fees that jack the nightly price way beyond the stated "per night". Fool me once...
Neglected but Affordable Beachfront dog-friendly rental
It is affordable, and clearly a neglected cottage. I would guess whoever owns it hasn't been there is 20 years or more. The water was turned off for half a day while we were staying there, the windows were really hard to open and close, the toilet rocked and it could use a serious update. There is no wireless service, stereo nor cable t.v.. Luckily there is a DVD player and we brought DVDs. We didn't mind the lack of some of these things as we were just very happy to be able to afford a week at the beach and bring our dog, but getting the water shut off was pretty upsetting and stressful and I really felt like we should have received some credit toward our bill for that.
It would have been very very useful for some information beach rules. Luckily a neighbor told us there is a fine for walking on the dunes and that dogs must be leashed. Signage of some sort for the visitor so they can abide by the rules should be in the home.
We found the restaurants nearby great: both the Pepperoni pizza place walking distance from the cottage and the great restaurant near the pier, Island Way, which is defnitely worth it for your more expensive meal out. Both of these places were excellent. The Pirates Deck near the Food Town (he Food Town was great) was mediocre. If you love lots of fried food then that is the place to go.
