Got 4WD and High Clearance? Pinks Gem is awaiting.

Bedrooms 1
Space 960 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Studio house and small trailer guesthouse make up this 2 bedroom, 1 bath rental.

So you got a 4WD and your wife wants to know why..... So you can take her to Pinks Gem, my offgrid, 30 acre, very private country home. The drive here is one of the most beautiful in the region, with 360 degree mountain top views, abundant willdlife, and wildflowers year around. (You must have a FOUR WHEEL DRIVE vehicle with at least 8 inches of ground clearance to book this rental. If you arrive in a car that will not make it, there will be no refund, please contact me first if you are in doubt that your vehicle will qualify.) There are miles of dirt roads to explore here, on foot or wheels. You will see no neighbors or lights; hear nothing. Time to recharge and reset your mind. Come here to unwind and explore as you are 8 miles (30 minutes) to Terlingua, your gateway to Big Bend National Park,Big Bend Ranch State Park, and the ghostown.

My twin sister moved to Terlingua for 5 winters to help me build my dream house. We lived in the little trailer house that is available to rent as the guest house. It is important to me that this house be treated with love and respect. Pinks Gem is solar powered with a back up generator system. All appliances that draw heavy loads such as air conditioners, curling irons, blow dryers, etc. must be used with the generator as they will draw down the solar in a matter of minutes. The refrigerator, LED lights, cell phone booster, and TV run just fine on solar given it has been sunny outside. The first tank of gas for the generator is provided, beyond that due to excessive use, is up to you to supply more petrol. An empty gas can is available. I run propane for the heater, hot water heaters, and cook stoves. All water supplied here is from a rain water catchment system. It is critical to be conservative with your water usage. Biodegradable soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and body washes are preferred. The grey water system actually waters my garden. There is indoor facilities and an outhouse that utilizes a compost bucket system that must be emptied prior to your departure. Pinks Gem is designed for you to be self sufficent, and when it is time for you to head home, I ask you to clean up after yourself (wipe down the counters, put up clean dishes, sweep, etc.), and carry out all of your trash and recyclables. So your packing list should include, towels, sheets and pillowcases (1 full bed and 2 twin beds), tents (if anyone in your party wants to camp out under the stars), flashlights, firewood (if you want a campfire), drinking water, food, and anything else that makes you happy. If you have pets, please bring 2 sheets to cover the couches. Terlingua Ranch roads are private, not county maintained, so we all ask you to stay on the roads, not scarring up the desert, and to put them in 4WD so as not to spin up hills creating washboards. That way others on ATVs, motorcycles, jeeps, trucks, etc. can have a bit smoother ride. The last rule is to come, relax, unwind, and have some fun. Reset and recharge your soul and mind. I can provide linens and towels as well as clean up after you leave, if you like for a small $100 fee; contact me for details and arrangements to make sure I am available and not working my other job. If anything needs attention or if you have just got a few general questions, don't hesitate to call or email me anytime. I'd be glad to have you all.

About Erica Little and Jimmie Ivy

I travel between Tennessee and Texas as a whitewater raft guide. My sister and I decided to build our own rock house in the Chihuahuan Desert, taking 5 years to complete. It is all off the grid, and I think it is a great adventure and experience to be a part of. As luck would have it, I met my now husband who is building his own house with my lovely assistance, and therefore I have decided to rent my house for a lil extra income. My house, Pinks Gem, has no neighbors, bypassing traffic, visible lights at night, or noise, except what you make. It is a slice of solitude where you can do your own thing, whatever that is. For me I love to travel, to experience the fabric of different cultures, and to find those intimate spots that are all my own, even if just for a few brief moments. I guide in the national park and state park here and really hope that people take the time to come and stay for a while so they can knock off a few of my top pics list as well as take the time to explore what I call the edge of the world....

Erica Little and Jimmie Ivy purchased this house in 2011

Why Erica Little and Jimmie Ivy chose Terlingua

I drove the roads of Terlingua Ranch for several months, just looking for that piece of property that felt like it could be home. I wanted property with a little contour, just not flat desert, mountain views, no neighbors, and a good variety of vegetation. When I first saw this land, I knew it was the one. There are 2 arroyos (usually dry creeks) that flow on both sides of the homesite that join and meander off together in a small canyon. Not only that but the site was situated right between 2 mountains. I can not tell you how many deer , audads, and javelina i have watched right out the windows because the animals love the contour of this land, providing great protection. I am also located right between 2 small springs, a rarity in the desert. Being a river guide for 17 years now had given me plenty opportunity to camp out back, but I always wanted more. So my sister and I built a rock house here. We hauled many loads of stones off the property and shoveled sand from the arroyos. This took many long days of hard work, but it paid off in the end. Come and see what we have created on the land we love.

What makes this house unique

There are several things that I just love about my house. Probably my favorite is just lying in bed look out the wall of windows. You can see an entire night sky with all the stars and watch the pinks of sunrise emerge. I also love the back porch because that view will never get old. Having no one around is special because you really have the place to yourself. Pinks Gem to me is a romantic getaway, from all the crystal rocks in the walls, to the indoor planter box with all the herbs, to the cedar benched super hot shower, and the little chandelier that sparkles over the bed. The little guesttrailer is also unique and fun to stay in.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Amazing escape. No lists, no agenda. Feeling refreshed. Want to celebrate my wife's birthday, we had a great time. This place puts your mind at peace. It was awesome to have time away with my spouse. Sometimes we need to find ourselves. We found ourselves whispering in the Silence of the night. Erica, and Jimmy comma work great hosts. Can't wait to go back!

Great solitude, so much terrain to explore!

  • 4 of 5

2 thumbs up on the following: Jimmy was very accommodating & helpful - he's one interesting guy! - And Erica's directions proved valuable. Had a wonderful time climbing up Pinks Peak, at the top of which we encountered a small herd (16) of Aoudad-Barbary sheep and got a 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape; also went fossil-hunting up the nearby dry wash; and enjoyed beautiful starry nights. Our two grandkids, ages 7 & 10, had a great time exploring! Challenging aspects: the drive in & out is tedious - took us 55 minutes each way to drive the 7-8 miles - and we had completely dry roads. Be forewarned. It took awhile for things to cool down at night; tried using the AC one night but it's pretty wimpy. The two kids slept in the little camper, which had ample sleeping space, but the ventilation was tricky (fairly warm in there at night, and about the only option was to leave the door wide open. Running the little window a.c. would have required running the generator which was parked right next to the camper and made a considerable racket, not to mention concern about its exhaust.) Managing the solar & generator requires a little trial & error, but the fridge worked well for us. And don't count on any cell phone service, even with the provided booster. We didn't get a signal until we had climbed 2/3 of the way up Pinks Peak. Bottom line: this VRBO is remote & rustic, but it made for a memorable experience!

Owner's Response: We enjoyed having this family out here in Terlingua. It really depends on how you drive as to how long it takes to get out to Pinks Gem. Most people average 30 minutes to go 8 miles, however if you crawl along and soak in the scenery it will take longer. The little guest trailer has 5 windows, it is just a matter of opening them to get a little cross breeze. Most people have cell service, however a few folks do not. I need to figure out which providers work best here in Terlingua. The generator is the most expensive one Lowe's sold, a Generac. Most generators do make a little noise. In a place where complete silence is the norm, I understand how this could be considered loud. Living off the grid is always an adventure, and I thank you for your feedback!

Awesome trip!

  • 5 of 5

The house was great as were the hosts. It is remote and very peaceful. As mentioned in other posts you will need a 4wd. This was probably the best family trip we have taken! My son and his friend climbed Pinks and Black mountain. Rode atvs. We saw javelina, mule deer, and other wildlife. Did some hiking around the property , as well as, in the national park. The peace and quiet were a welcome change to daily life. My only regret is not staying longer!

Thanks Jimmie and Erica! Your place is awesome!

Great little house

  • 5 of 5

My daughters and I had a great trip to Big Bend and thoroughly enjoyed staying here. This house is tremendous. Love the mountain views and watching the aoudad on the mountains in the evening. Pay attention to the description though. You really do need 4wd to get to the house.

The Pink Gem is fantastic! The area is stunning, in every single corner and way. Thanks again Erika

The Pink Gem is fantastic. A lovely off the grid home. We couldn’t imagine a more beautiful location, and such a stunning drive. We looked forward to watching the sun rise each morning, sitting at the bottom of Pink Peak, which the house is nestled next too. We stayed from Wednesday to the next Monday morning, and when it came time to pack up, we wished we had a whole other week. Already looking forward to a return trip.

Very gracious, friendly, welcoming and respectful hosts. They will meet you and show you around if you like and have detailed directions to get to the house as well. Erica is very responsive and has prepared all the information you need for arrival and house stuff. Oh yeah, and she has detailed descriptions of places that you want to see (that aren’t on any maps) in the house for you. We ran into some car trouble, and it was on Sunday which meant none of the auto shops were open. Jimmy dropped everything he was doing and was there to help us within a half hour. Seriously saved the day.

Hard to describe how wonderful it is. We hiked in the park as much as we could each day. And had an absolutely wonderful time being home and exploring around The Pink Gem every moment we weren’t in the park. The area is stunning, in every single corner and way! Words don't do it justice.

Thanks again Erika and Jimmy! This is a trip we will never forget.

We loved staying Pink’s Gem. We were there five nights and the location and house were magical.

  • 4 of 5

The best parts of staying at Pink’s Gem were the character and personality of the house, the drive to it, the ability to hike around right out the door, and the great people who made sure we had everything we needed.

The drive in is wonderful and like your own West Texas safari. We saw lots of Javalina. I would definitely recommend getting there before dark on the first day. I loved the indoor garden. It helped give a refreshing break to the stark, rocky dryness of the area.

The propane fireplace/stove made for a cozy night/morning. My five year old particularly enjoyed the swing in the kitchen for coloring and breakfast.

Loved it!

OFF the Grid retreat

  • 4 of 5

The house was great, the property is beautiful and very remote. The host were very attentive and helpful during our stay and check in regularly to make sure all was going well for us. We had previously planned a lot actives back and forth into the national park so that was a bit of a drive each morning and then back in the evening. Next time i plan on spending more time at the house and exploring the property. Overall a fantastic place to stay and will hopefully be back soon.
