I was most impressed with your many prompt replies to my questions. We appreciated that the building was very secure with digital entrance code etc. The apartment could house four adults properly. Furnishings were very suitable- my son was fascinated with the large interesting library. We also appreciated the access to free Internet & free phone calls internationally. What a bonus!

While in Europe none of the other rentals had left such detailed information as you had for us upon our arrival about your flat, transportation, local attractions, etc. Thank you for that! The location was very convenient- we were able to walk to many places in the Bastille area. We loved the many cafes. We appreciated the reasonable rental fee you ask. Would we stay there again? Yes! It met our needs & had a trusting l&lord who was very congenial & helpful. What more could you ask?

Staying at Jean Charles's apartment was a great choice. It has everything (& more) you would expect from an apartment including a full kitchen, dining area & office area. We really appreciated the computer & high speed Internet access as well as the free calls back to the United States. I would recommend this apartment to anyone

Dear Jean. We'll be more than glad to recommend your lovely flat which satisfy our expectations during our holiday in Paris. The flat is comfortable & in a very good location, but for us, the most significant advantage was - meeting a nice & hospitable proprietor

From the moment Jean Charles greeted us at his apartment, we felt as if we were right at home in Paris. The flat itself was very comfortable with all comforts & conveniences available (including a wonderful book collection), & the location was excellent. We highly recommend this apartment for Paris visitors

Jean Charles. Our friends & I enjoyed ourselves very much. It was a very cute apt. We loved the fact you had the Web & free international calling. It is pretty well located, walking distance to the museums, & only blocks from the cemetery Pere Lachaise which is beautiful. We had a great stay & I would recommend it because it is larger than most hotel rooms. Also the metro & taxi stands are close. We had a great time. Thank you

Hi Jean. I just wanted to thank you for the lovely stay in Paris. It has been a real pleasure renting from you. I have never tried to rent an apartment before in a foreign country so I was very scared about what would happen. If ever you need a recommendation, forward the request along & I will be happy to give one for you (with high praises of course) :)

About The Owner

Jean Charles Dicharry, artist and bilingual writer, is early on interested in performance creation in Amsterdam. This allowed for staged interactive experiments between photography, painting and poetry with the help of mimes and dancers. Later, based in New York, he involves himself internationally with fresco and mural projects. Subsequently the then nascent world of computing offers creative investigation to multimedia virtual art, combining animation, text and sound for installation projects.

Presently back in Paris, he now devotes himself mainly to writing.

The Owner purchased this condo in 1951

Why The Owner chose Roquette

My parents bought this home a few years after the second world war. My father, a French naval officer, left France during the war for England to fight the Nazi regime. My English mother was at the admiralty … and so they met. One of the rare benefits of any conflict. They settled in France where I am born. With my sister we all lived in this Parisian nest during the 50's and 60's. I then lived in Holland and the United States When I decided to rent it I had no idea it would be so gratifying. This because travellers visiting give back life to a space that has meaning to me. I know Paris better perhaps than my soul and enjoy giving to visitors who wish so a sense of its history, mystery and spirit.

What makes this condo unique

An authentic neighbourhood yet close to all activities where one can truly experience living as a Parisian. All the amenities (shops for daily necessities, specialty stores, supermarkets, post office, ATM, parks, cafes, restaurants) one can expect from an authentic neighbourhood that is still not affected by the merchandising of the nearby famous areas, yet very close to them. A very calm district and one of the most charged with history. Access to all parts of Paris are easy either walking (to the Bastille marina and river and the Marais in 15 mn), by subway direct to Champs Elysees, Trocadero and Montmartre (line 9 and 2 – duration of trip 15 to 20 mn depending of the target) or with the fantastic world renowned 69 bus, one block away, which crosses most major points of interest in the city (Pere Lachaise – Bastille marina and opera - Marais - The river Seine & its islands with Notre Dame & the Sainte Chapelle - Beaubourg Museum- Palais Royal - The Louvres museum - Orsay museum – Invalides and the Eifel Tower).

October 2017 one week stay for couple

  • 3 of 5

The owner, Jean Claude, is pleasant and meets you at the apartment for orientation and use of facilities. The area is primarily locals so it's good to feel to be a small part of Parisian life. Some nearby shops, with quality fruit, to stock the apartment for breakfast and so on. Local non tourist restaurants. A bit of surprise the local Vietnamese place doesn't use chillies in their cooking, but on request will provide a side dish with chillies in fish sauce!. Location is great with easy access to the famous #69 bus and metro.

The apartment is OK for two people, although a refurbishment would be a good idea.

Though Paris is well worth the time & effort to visit, it is a real surprise France still permits smoking in public. If you're a non smoker you cannot sit at outside tables having a coffee, meal etc as clouds of cigarette smoke are wafting by.

Great stay

Thank you Jean for a great stay. You were very helpful in getting us settled and oriented to Paris. The location was good, close to the bus routes, shops, and restaurants. Our family of 4 fit in the space nicely and the kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed for cooking.

Owner's Response: Thank you dawn, I keep a nice memory of your stay, the way you cared for my/your home and expecially the pleasure of sharing experience about travels. You live in a remarkable part of the world which close by area, as you know, I visited in the 70's. Wishing you more spirited adventures.

Great location and easy to get to all of the sites

  • 5 of 5

We had a memorable stay in the Bastille area. The apartment is centrally located and close to metro and the popular Bus 69 that went all of the way through Paris to the Eiffel Tower. Jean Charles was very helpful, providing information and recommending local restaurants. We would recommend this unit.

Great experience in the 11th arrondissement of Paris

  • 5 of 5

I have been to Paris many times and have stayed in a number of arrondissements. This time, I wanted to try the 11th, where I had never stayed before. I highly recommend this apartment to anyone visiting Paris. It is located in a very un-touristy part of Paris, where you can feel like you are really living like the locals. There are a number of good restaurants and cafés nearby (go to l'Artiste on rue de la Roquette) and the metros are close (Pierre Auguste and Voltaire).

The owner of this apartment - Jean Charles - is very friendly and informative, and he clearly wants you to enjoy his home and the surrounding neighborhood, where he grew up. I met him on the day of my arrival and he gave me several ideas locally for restaurants, cafés, shopping, etc. He also gave me an overview of the history of this neighborhood, which once held in custody those destined for the guillotine during the Revolution. (You can actually see on the street where the guillotine used to be - there are 5 rocks embedded in the pavement that are still there close to 230 years later). As a history buff, I welcomed this information.

The apartment has everything you need: kitchen, bathroom, shower, living room, bedroom. There is WiFi included, as well as TV. It is only one floor up from the ground, so it is very accessible.

Jean Charles made me feel at home right away, and I had a very pleasant visit to another interesting part of Paris. I hope to return to this apartment one day.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your appreciation Mark but also for your understanding of what I hope to achieve by welcoming guests. That is rendered that much easier when meeting people like you who have an awareness regards travelling, meeting people and immersing into their experience and culture in a way that I share. You are welcome any time.

Hotels and vacation by owner – two worlds apart

  • 5 of 5

We like traveling in a responsible and involved manner. We don’t mind and actually like having the use and taking care of a real home. If hotels can occasionally be welcoming living for a while surrounded by the life style of another person can be an amazing plus, depending on where you land and who you meet. That is why we are so content with this rental. The landlord has made sure all the necessary information was clearly layered out so that we could live there as well as immerse ourselves in the city like Parisians. The space is loaded with all that you may need for daily life, entertainment or work. It is calm, comfortable and has AC as well as central heating. Transportation, restaurants and stores are all close by, some around the block.

Owner's Response: I am glad my home allowed for all activities you needed to fulfil. Yes the recent addition of windows 10 and fiber optic connection allows for faster access to all this information as well. I however keep the libraries with reference books and art books available for those who prefer to enjoy reading with a real book in hand. There are now 11 000 tunes of music covering all styles and periods. You can choose to listen to these either in the bedroom, the living room or both. There is a new super market nearby that closes as late as 10 PM. The new taps of each radiator allow for even more precise temperature choices.
