About James Kelty
As writer and documentary filmmaker working in many areas of California, I moved with my family from Los Angeles to this spectacular part of the Central Coast in 1988, both as an inspirational retreat and a place with easy access to other areas of the Golden State.
James Kelty purchased this House in 2000
Why James Kelty chose Cambria
We love back country hiking and mountain biking, particular in Big Sur, for which Cambria is the southern gateway, as well as kayaking in San Simeon Cove. The area is also rich in history, which is my area of expertise as a writer/producer, so that made it an equally good fit. Cultural and environmental attractions include Hearst Castle and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. I work with both of these organizations on interpretive media projects.
What makes this House unique
My hope is that guests coming to this special house bordering the forest and the ocean will leave feeling refreshed and inspired.

We had a great time at the house. Lots of deer in the neighborhood. We loved the views from the deck. I have a sensitive back and the beds were very comfortable. I didn't have back pain. The only complaint I have is the wifi. The wifi went in and out, and I had to move around the house to find a stronger signal.
Enjoyed the lovely setting among the trees. I recommend this home and Cambria for a relaxing holiday.
We had a lovely stay which we booked last-minute. The owner happened to be at the house when we arrived and he graciously showed us around the property and answered our questions. Amazing view of the distant Pacific peeking through towering pine trees from both decks! Very peaceful and quiet. The house was spacious and our group of 4 adults (one couple and two singles) fit nicely. Kitchen was spacious...not top-drawer appointed amenities, but OK for a rental. Internet connection was robust. The only suggestions that we have would be to have a television in the living room area so that the entire group staying at the house can watch a movie or TV program all together...as it is set up now, there are TVs in each of the 3 bedrooms so if anyone wants to watch they must retreat to their own separate bedrooms. Also, it would have been nice to have a hair dryer available as well as some complimentary toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, soap) as we did not bring any and had to run to the store to purchase. Overall a nice place to stay whilst in Cambria! Thank you.
Overall great stay!
My husband and I stayed Thursday through Sunday. The kitchen had pretty much everything we needed to prepare our local farmers market finds. There is a coffee pot and a Keurig. The patio has a gas grill, comfy seating and a great view. We felt safe, comfortable and relaxed. Btw...the living room has beautiful windows that made for a great yoga spot in the morning. Overall, a great stay and we will be back!
Very nice house.
This is a beautiful property. You are not allowed in the yard, however. I believe the owner or caretaker lives below as we heard someone talking one evening.
As noted in the property description, the downstairs is not lived in. With the house services located there, however, the owner and/or service people have access by separate entrance to this area for repairs. The phone answer machine is occasionally heard upstairs.
Quiet and relaxing
Loved the space and the location. Short drive to Hearst, elephant seals, Morro, wineries and more.
On California's Central Coast 6 miles from Hearst Castle, with spectacular natural beauty, unique wildlife, Gourmet Restaurants, Wine Tasting, Art Galleries, Gift Shops, Camping & Retreats. Cambria is home to artists and craftspeople; the coast is inhabited by a large elephant seal population. Ocean kayaking, surfing, windsurfing and parasailing are popular activities.
