Owner/Manager, Juan, was not responsive to forced cancellation due to Huricane Irma

The purpose for my long planned trip to Tallahassee changed following Florida being hit by Hurricane Irma in early September 2017. Once I realized the trip would have to be cancelled, I called the property owner/manager Juan (5-days before the trip), and asked him to cancel. Juan indicated that he could not refund me or cancel the reservation, because it was a "business", and he had to follow the Home Away "policy". I then called Home Away, and was told that there was nothing Home Away could do, and that the owner had the ability to issue a refund, or to allow me to move the date. They said there was no policy preventing te homeowner from changing the reservation and even giving me a full refund, if he had wanted to. They also said only the owner could cancel the reservation to open it up for other potential tenants. From that point forward I tried four times by phone, and once by email, to contact Juan, to try and get his help in cancelling the stay such that the property could be opened up to other potential tenants and therefore I could receive the refund for my paid stay. Juan did not return my email or phone calls prior to the stay, where I asked for help in making the cancellation. Then following the weekend I followed up with phone calls and emails seeking a reschedule for another weekend when Juan had not already rented the house. Again, Juan failed to return my phone calls or emails. I am very disappointed in this experience because the owner choose to put profit ahead of fairness and compassion, considering the unique circumstances with a hurricane that significantly affected Florida from the Keys to the Panhandle. I understand business very well, but the Home Away community is supposed to be just a little different than the pure corporate world. Heck, I believe most corporate hotels would have allowed me to reschedule, especially under the natural disaster circumstances. Major issues come up unexpectedly and we all should be fair in life, and this "business" only mentality of Juan is very unfortunate. I wasn't asking or expecting Juan to lose out on the sale, and likewise Juan should have worked with me to allow me to avoid losing the full payment. He chose to not do that. I strongly recommend avoiding this property at all costs.

Unsafe neighborhood

This property is located in a low-income, unsafe neighborhood. Within a block of the property, we noticed many broken down cars and people loitering outside, just hanging out. The property itself is rundown and not suitable for renting. We paid for three nights and could not stay one. Checked into a hotel for the three days.
