About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Attached Unit, 1.5+ Baths, (Sleeps 3-4)

Welcome to Casa Milonga. (By the way, a milonga is an Argentine tango party, one of our very favorite things.)

Casa Milonga is located in the popular neighborhood of San Antonio, a five minute walk from the Instituto Allende (An Art and Language School) and fifteen minutes from the Jardin/Town Center. San Antonio is a safe and friendly mixed community of Mexican families and foreign residents, offering the dynamics of everyday culture, but only minutes away from all of the highlights of San Miguel.

Several small food markets and family run restaurants are within a five minute walk. On Sundays, a fabulous food market runs for four hours only two minutes away. The old and lovely San Antonio church is located at the end of our short street.

From the fourth-floor terrace-top of Casa Milonga you can see a panoramic 360 degrees and the entire city of San Miguel, including the grand Parroquia Cathedral (next to the Jardin) and the fireworks which they seem to find a reason to light the sky with nearly every week. Casa Milonga is a free standing house unto itself in a small group of homes which share privacy and safety behind a street wall and gate. Our little group of houses are evenly divided between local families and retired foreigners.

CASA MILONGA is divided into two residences:

CASA MILONGA UNO, the larger top residence, comprising the second and third floors plus the inviting terrace with tiled palapa roof (complete with hammock) is a beautiful and comfortable home, decorated with a mixture of Mexican modern, colonial, and folk art that will delight your senses and cheer your heart. It has one and a half newly tiled baths, a master bedroom with queen-size bed and fabulous pressed metal folk art headboard, a separate bedroom/writing study with a twin bed, a second floor living room/den with large couch, TV, and stereo. On the third floor is a full beautiful kitchen with traditional Mexican pottery dishes, an open dining room with a wooden table for six to eight, and a living room with a gorgeous view of the city center. There is heat on all the floors.

CASA MILONGA UNO suits one to three people easily, though either couch could become a bed for single guests. The new kitchen has all the amenities plus a dishwasher and three-sided counter space for more lavish culinary pursuits. The secluded second floor living room is ideal for quiet reading (we have a small library of classics and contemporary books) or watching movies from a DVD or VHS, as well as television with several English channels.

The third floor living room is bright with a tremendous view inspiring one to just sit and watch the city from a treetop view. A washer, dryer, and clothes line on the terrace make laundry easy. At about 1600 square feet this home allows each of its guests to pursue their personal passions with ease. Bring binoculars - the birdwatching is great.

CASA MILONGA DOS with its own entrance on the ground floor is about 550 square feet, colorfully painted and charming with a bedroom, full Talevera tiled bathroom, small living room, very sweet kitchen, and dining area.

The ground floor apartment is for one or two people containing one double bed (photo x), closet and dressers. The kitchen is fully-equipped with stove, oven, microwave, blender, coffeemaker, pots, pans, and dishes. Further amenities include a television, phone, gas heater, and portable CD radio.

Both rentals come with ample linens which the once a week maid will attend to.

Great classic Mexican themed place

  • 4 of 5

I liked my month long stay very much at Casa Milonga and everything about the house was as described by the owner and other reviewers. The only things I'd like to note as to why I gave the place 4 not 5 stats are:

-I recommend that you think about the weeks/month you're going to be there, and if it's summer be aware that there's no AC, and the breeze doesn't kick up until the evening. This meant that I couldn't relax in the house at all between about noon & 7pm, unless I wanted to bear the 80-85F temperature inside the house. It is more pleasant inside the house on rainy days however.

-This house is best suited for early morning risers as the lack of curtains (other than shear white) let a lot of sun into the 2 bedrooms which are both on the hotter/brighter side of the house. Since keeping the windows open all night is the only way to keep the bedrooms cool enough to sleep, you will also hear all the morning noise by about 6am. The neighborhood is mostly nice and quiet though for sleeping from about 11pm-6am.

-One last note, so you can make a fully informed decision on whether to rent this house is that the two bedrooms are quite small, so they're not places to lounge in besides just for sleeping. Luckily there's lots of ample lounging spaces throughput the house (and lots of stairs so you are aware).

Those were my only difficulties. Otherwise it was a great place to stay for the price. I did a lot of research, and there are places to stay in SMA that do have air conditioning as well as full house water filtration systems, but then you're looking at about US$500 more per month.

As for me, I had no problem with the lack of filtered water throughout the house as the owner was nice enough to stalk me up with 4 large 5 gallon water jugs that were waiting for me upon arrival.

I also found many dance and fitness classes within a 5-10min walk of the house which was great.

Overall the place is very bright and spacious, and the terrace views can't be beat!

Owner's Response: Dear Joana, I am glad that you enjoyed your month at Casa Milonga. Thanks so much for your feedback. There was a standing fan in the closet of the guest bedroom and we will be glad to have another one available for future summer renters. I think it was an especially hot June for San Miguel. Regarding the light coming in early we have enjoyed seeing the beautiful trees outside the window and since privacy is not the issue we have stuck with the sheers. However, I can see that it might be a problem and I will have a second pair of darker "black out" curtains on the rods so they can be pulled as well if one wishes. Thanks again for being a clear communicator though out the whole rental process. Best, Harriet

Nice place!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for the month of January, 2017, and really enjoyed ourselves. Nice place, nice layout, nice terrace, nice neighborhood! Everything was just as described, and we found the owners really engaging; ditto for the property manager (Rory) and the housekeeper (Maria). Local stores, shops and restaurants were a joy to frequent, and we absolutely found ourselves drawn to the church (half a block up the street). Its bells, its plaza, its shade trees, its patrons -- just wonderful. We'll definitely be back one day.

Absolutely charming!

  • 5 of 5

My college roommate and I spent ten days at Casa Malonga and it suited us beautifully. we were lucky to be there on Palm Sunday when we were able to watch the Procession down San Francisco Calle. ........Jesus on a donkey, the twelve apostles, priests, locals carrying beautiful handwoven palm fronds. The market around the corner was perfect for picking up orange juice, yogurt, cereals, wine, etc. Coffee and croissants at the Instituto Allende Cafe was a handy place to hang out with our iPads and conversations with the locals and expats. We are both artists so we found delightful subjects everywhere to sketch.

Casa Malonga is charming with the owner's collection of old Mexican folk art, very clean, great shower and the roof top terrace is a great place for sipping glass of wine before heading out to one of the any restaurants nearby. The 360 degree view of the city dressed in jacaranda purple blooms was a Wonderland! No disappointments on this rental for us!!!!!

Casa Milonga

  • 5 of 5

We have been fortunate enough to spend Christmas week in SMA for the past seven years. Using vrbo we have always found very nice rentals at a reasonable price. The last two Christmases we have stayed at Casa Milonga, a lovely home located in a vibrant neighborhood within walking distance to most everything. (One of our favorites is the Weber Tennis Center, a mere three blocks away).

Casa Milonga is beautifully furnished and well-maintained. There are wonderful views of the city from the living room and roof-top terrace. If you run into any problems a property manager is just a phone call away.

You will enjoy your stay at Casa Milonga. We have.

I wish we were still in San Miguel, on the terrace at Casa Milonga. We had such a lovely time -- great town, great food, great people! Walking on Orizaba and turning the corner onto Callejon de la Palma were so special, and approaching Casa Milonga through the black gate was the best. But the prettiest part, I think, was the area you recommended -- Sollano walking down toward Juarez Park. The food was so, so wonderful. My favorite dinner was tacos al pastor from the stand at the corner of Ancha and Calle Nueva. And the chile relleno at El Correo. And the outdoor seating at Ten Ten Pie! I hope that we'll have a chance to return someday soon.
