About the property

Everyone's favorite rental! We recently completed a significant renovation of the house with many improvements and updates. Charming, quintessential Martha's Vineyard house situated on a spectacular private pond on 8.5 secluded acres in Lambert's Cove. Surrounded by hundreds of acres of conservation lands (Land Bank, Nature Conservancy, and Vineyard Open Land Foundation properties). Close to north shore beach (walk-on beach access included with rental) and Seth's Pond - approximately one mile down Lambert's Cove Road. Three miles to shopping in both Vineyard Haven center and West Tisbury center. Three bedroom main house and two one-bedroom studio cottages available. Ferry reservations available for some summer weeks - early bookings are a must. Please see our personal website (see link at bottom of page).

Conservation Lands: The house is literally surrounded by extensive conservation lands that are wonderful for hiking, walking, and even some fishing. The Land Bank's Ripley's Field is on our street and is approximately 60 acres of a mixture of woodland trails and open fields. It connects to two more Land Bank properties - Tisbury Meadown Preserve and Wompesket, both with extensive acreage. The house is part of the Vineyard Open Land Foundation's Cranberry Acres which includes a 25-acre series of kettle ponds (which include Flat Bottom Pond behind the house, Duarte's Ponds, and Seth's Pond) and cranberry bogs. The VOLF is in the process of rehabilitating the old cranberry bogs and had its first harvest in the fall of 2005. Connecting to Cranberry Acres is the Hoft Farm, a very large (more than 100 acres) working farm owned by The Nature Conservancy which has large fields and ponds that are great for wandering. The Land Bank's Duarte's Pond is also in walking distance and has a stocked pond for fishing.

A Brief History : The house was built almost single-handedly by an artist and his family. Dubbed 'Woods House' because of its seclusion in the beautiful woodlands of Lambert's Cove, the central part of the house was built in 1965. The family was among a group of talented Vineyard artisans, craftsmen, and musicians, who came to the island in the '60's. He is an accomplished sculptor and, inspired by the work of Wharton Esherick, took great pleasure in imagining and creating the house in his own studio (a barn also on the property). The style can best be described as Craftsman. Particularly interesting details include the handmade doors, door fixtures, kitchen, cabinets, woodshed, decks, and numerous interior details. The barn and two cottages on the property were built in the '70's to house a growing family and creative output. To preserve his legacy, we have found a carpenter who worked with the artist in the '60's. He has worked on the house both refurbishing existing features and creating new ones.

The artist was influenced by Japanese art, which is evident in the house and the many unique trees planted 40 years ago which have grown into a mature grove. According to an experienced island arborist, the quality and variety of the trees are second only to the Polly Hill Arboretum in West Tisbury. In 2003, we acquired 2.2 acres of vacant land which was once part of Duarte's Campground and is now part of the Vineyard Open Land Foundation's Cranberry Acres and includes 25 acres of common land, 3 ponds, and a cranberry bog. In 2006, we acquired the 3.5 acre lot adjacent to the main house which includes most of Flat Bottom Pond and extensive woodlands in order to preserve our privacy and to expand the arboretum of unique and beautiful trees and plants. Our guests have universally remarked upon the terrific feel of the house - the comfortable yet simple layout, the bright and cozy rooms, the wonderful outdoor spaces overlooking the pond, and the incredible collection of trees.

For larger groups that need a second house, our next-door neighbors rent their house too. See the 'Links' page for their Homeaway lising (#3484385).

About Ben Spencer

Ben and Georgia are physicians in private practice in Northern Westchester and Putnam Counties specializing in Urology and Gastroenterology.

Ben Spencer purchased this cottage in 1999

Why Ben Spencer chose Martha's Vineyard

I visited the island as a kid many times, spent summers during college working on the island, and when I found myself in Boston for my medical residency during the 1990's, I had the opportunity of pursuing my dream of having a Vineyard retreat of my own. To us, the house and property represent all that makes the Vineyard so special: hand-built house is a piece of artwork itself, gorgeous physical setting, close proximity to conservation lands with ponds and beaches, and an overall otherwordly feeling make one feel transported from our more hectic lives at home.

What makes this cottage unique

Gorgeous setting, Land Bank properties and conservation lands in walking distance, Seth's Pond, multiple outbuildings allow for expanding to larger groups, each with their own private and quiet spot.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Ben,

We're sadly home from your magical house...[the door knobs! the hidden doors! the wisteria vine! the fireplace with a heart!] We had great weather and the yard looked amazing. The gardener did a great job trimming and everything looked lovely. The house was perfect for the dinner, candle light everywhere, no bugs, warm air and lots of love floating around. The next day the breeze was out of the south and we had a wonderful sail and wedding aboard the Shenandoah. Your house provided the needed respite from the craziness and a place for the family to be together. Thanks so much. I'll forward shots of the yard as soon as I download them. It was quite beautiful.

Thanks again, everyone wants to return next year.

There is a large Activity Barn on the property that is available to guests. It is particularly useful on rainy days for children. It is a single large room with high ceilings and about 1,000 square feet. It has a ping pong table, TV with cable (including HBO and Showtime) and VCR, and basic furniture. We also have a mooring on Lake Tashmoo which we can make available to you if desired.

Wonderful break in a beautiful place

  • 5 of 5

The home was everything you expect and see on the site and more. We had a wonderful stay and Ben the host was very helpful when we had a few questions. I'd love to go back one day.

Just as described

  • 3 of 5

The house and property are lovely and isolated. It's a wonderful place to say if you want peace and quiet. It was a bit more rustic than I expected but nothing that should put anyone off it.

My only complaint was working with the owner. He asked us to move our plans and stay for only 4 nights after we had paid for 5 days. He did offer to give refund us for 2 nights instead of just one night. However, at this point (nearly 11 days later) we have yet to receive that refund. I'm not sure if this delay is because we mistakenly checked out later (11am instead of 9:30am). Regardless, it is a bit frustrating and I'm not sure if I have any chance at getting my money back.

High Price for What You Get

  • 1 of 5

We stayed in this home during the summer of 2015 and we were extremely disappointed, especially given the high price tag. This house does NOT have a view of a pond. The pond is completely covered with vegetation so there is no water in sight. While the house has a lot of charm, it was not particularly clean when we arrived and it was rundown. Every corner in the house had cobwebs and there were things that hadn't been fixed, such as window screens, outside furniture and benches that were completely splintered, and lights that did not work in bathrooms (we tried to change the light bulbs but it didn't help). The kitchen had ONE wineglass and very tiny appliances and had not been upgraded in quite some time. The supply of linens was very scarce, there were no extra sheets and the pillows were completely flat. Beware that the outdoor shower is not right next to the main house and it does not have hot water!

I would not stay in this home again simply due to false advertising and the outrageous price for what you get. I've been renting on the Vineyard for 10 years and this was by far the worst house we have stayed in.

Flat Bottom Pond Magic

  • 5 of 5

How could anyone not have a good time at this wonderful and whimsical cottage. I felt a world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, the minute I walked through the door. A true find for anyone who wants to escape from it all. Clean, warm, well appointed, everything I needed for a wonderful weekend away. I will be back for sure!
