Year Purchased: 2004
About the owner: Terrie Mangat: I grew up in northern Kentucky. both my grand fathers had business warehouses on the river front in Cincinnati, Ohio. I graduated from the University of Kentucky with honors in art in 1970, married a physician, and raised my two children in Cincinnati. after we divorced and my children went off to college, I sold my house in cinti and moved to Taos. I am known for my narrative and highly embellished quilt art work, and fabric designs. I now live in the foot hills above Valdez on the way to the ski valley, where I have a big studio, a dog named Dot, and a boyfriend named Dick, who is the maintenance manager at Taos ski Valley.
Why the Owner Chose Taos, NM, USA:
This house was always occupied by artists. My friend at the Harwood Museum told me I ought to see it before it was sold. When I walked into the house I fell in love with the warm character of the house, and I bought it. It needed work, and I put so much thought into repairing it and maintaining the ambiance that I fell in love with. I lived in it for 3 years, but could not sell my other house, so I moved back there and am renting this gorgeous historic New Mexico home short term until I can sell it.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
This house has so many intimate little spaces that one can enjoy. It has a great courtyard with a stone amphitheatre where I once had a fundraiser for the Harwood museum with traditional music playing, people sitting on the stone walls\seats, beautiful space for evenings out doors or morning coffee. I put in solar panels on the roof, which are not visible from the road due to the parapits. The original 3 rooms were built in 1880, and the walls are so thick that it stays very warm in the winter, and cool in the summer. The extra rooms were added on as needed in the New Mexico style, so it has a rather shot gun feeling of passing through rooms to other spaces. I love a tiny original staircase that goes from the dining room up to the master bedroom, but it is steep, so I also put in a larger staircase leading up along the side of the big studio. There is a nice size porch off the bedroom upstairs, where one can sit and read, ro just take in the view. Now the back studio, which was originally Bea's studio, has a second kitchen, and is a 400 sq ft studio rental which can be rented separately.
