Overview

About the property

One-bedroom, One-bath Uptown Charmer Designed for Comfort, with NOLA Flair

A lux retreat with a distinctly NOLA vibe, our home is near to everything the city has to offer - restaurants and dining, nightlife, the streetcar and public transport, and family-friendly activities. Hop on the streetcar and head down to Audubon Park and the universities, see St. Charles, and ride to the French Quarter! You’ll delight in the comfy bed, the dapper kitchen, and the stylish space - perfect for couples, solo adventurers, business travelers, and families (with one or two kids).

The apartment itself is a delight beyond description. A brand-new renovation, it is peppered with New Orleans charm mixed with modern luxury. Adorned in retro and modern chic, with art and photography lining the walls and the original brick fireplace embellishing the bedroom, the one-bedroom, one-bath is perfect for a couple on a romantic getaway, a small family, or a few close friends.

It offers a sleek kitchen adorned with newly purchased appliances, gorgeous ebony floors, and a fabulously outfitted walk-in shower. The kitchen is complete, with basic staples such as coffee, tea, milk, butter, juice, soda, fruit, and eggs included.

In the living area, midcentury modern couch is perfect for cozying up to watch a film. The space features AppleTV, which brings all of HBO, Netflix, and Showtime to your screen, plus you are welcome to access your own iTunes library and whatever iTunes offerings you'd like to rent/buy. There is also a large DVD selection (available upon request next door).

The living area couch can easily sleep a young guest. Also, the couch can be switched out for a queen-sized sleeper, or a (real, not air) twin mattress or a high quality airbed can be provided upon request. The bedroom is designed for comfort, with a large queen-size memory foam dream-bed and crisp Egyptian cotton sheets. A pack n' play is available for use by families as well.

The home also features a delightful front porch and a spacious front yard, for which a charcoal grill (with charcoal and lighter fluid) can be provided upon request.

The luxurious amenities include a brand new washer and dryer, a dishwasher, wireless internet, a TV, AppleTV, a pack n' play for infants and toddlers, and upon request: a queen memory foam air mattress, a twin mattress (real, not air), a DVD player as well as DVDs, grill, and bikes.

The property is very easy to locate and easy to love - whether you're in town for a wedding, a conference, Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, or just because.

Since the apartment adjoins our home, we will always be nearby to answer any questions or offer recommendations, and will of course always be available by phone or email. Our guidebook is extensive and I include pointers on local entertainment, food, happy hours, and events around NOLA during your stay. My husband and I also speak Russian, Norwegian, French, and some German, and international guests are very welcome!

A bit on our neighborhood...

A few minutes’ walk to the oak-lined Carrollton line, the home is easily accessible to all of New Orleans by streetcar, including Tulane and Loyola Universities, which are a ride or mere walk away. Steps away from the home is Oak Street, home to Po’Boy Fest, Jacques Imo’s (a MUST for local food), Breads On Oak (a truly divine French bakery), numerous wine bars and beer gardens, incredible restaurants, and the much beloved music haunt, the Maple Leaf Bar. A true gem of New Orleans, check out the Mississippi River levee walk and bike path, which offers 22 miles of unparalleled views of Old Man River. Also available upon request are children's and adult bikes. Because bike rentals in the area are limited, we happily provide bikes to those who use them. Bike over to the Garden District and marvel at the mansions, to Whole Foods, to Loyola and Tulane Universities, or cycle along the Mississippi River levee to Audubon Park.

New Orleans is a glorious city for its diversity, which includes blocks within neighborhoods. Our neighborhood is residential and emerging, so aside from Oak Street, it's largely a mix of long-time homeowners. This means that it is a mix of gorgeous renovations, historic shotguns, and run-down houses. Most guests say that while it initially doesn't seem like much (especially on the hardly-picturesque ride from the airport), the neighborhood has an authentic charm and is peppered with local gems - especially Oak Street, which can easily provide several nights' worth of night life. The neighbors are friendly and gregarious, even if some of their homes are run-down, and I feel perfectly safe walking around alone with my young son. Just keep in mind that this is not the Garden District, though we are Uptown, and the neighborhood is therefore mixed income and eclectic. As in anywhere throughout New Orleans, I recommend cabbing/Ubering home late at night and not walking around alone at late hours (even in the French Quarter).

Getting Around

A stylish and cozy home base, this one-bedroom, one-bath Riverbend mother-in-law is in the midst of everything the city has to offer! Centrally located, a five-minute walk or a streetcar ride across town will bring you to most areas of New Orleans – from the chill offerings of Oak Street steps away, to the French Quarter, to the Garden District, to the Bywater, to Frenchman Street. Here, everything is within walking or streetcar distance and a car is not absolutely necessary, and the bus line runs nearby on Leonidas as well. However, should you prefer a vehicle, Uber and Lyft are always available in the area. We provide bikes to all guests, so between bikes, the streetcar, and Uber/Lyft, it's easy to get around without a car. However, guests with vehicles are welcome to park for free right in front of the house.

About Vesta

A lover of fabulous spaces, elevated decor, art and architecture, I'm a prolific traveler, eternal student, devoted mom, tech nerd, and native Russian speaker and aspiring Francophone.

Vesta purchased this apartment in 2015

Why Vesta chose Carrollton

In a very distinct New Orleans neighborhood, this house project has been a labor of love, but having fully renovated the house from the bottom up, up, up (I added a camelback to the original single story), this house has grown into a portrait of my family and I.

What makes this apartment unique

The house is both near to everything the city has to offer and situated on a dead-end street, which makes it very quiet. My favorite are Saturday mornings, with birds singing and total quiet on my block. Also the proximity to the Mississippi River gives the house a fabulous breeze. My family and I love to ride bikes along the levee, which actually stretches 22 miles!

Very sweet and comfortable. Slept well. Enjoyed having the kitchen although we did not use it much

Very clean. We drove our car to the destinations and found the location of the apartment to be well placed. Wish we could have stayed longer.

Outstanding Host!

  • 5 of 5

We very much enjoyed our stay. The Uptown location with it's close proximity to some of our favorite places on Oak Street was very convenient. The home was comfortable, clean, and well maintained. Vesta goes above and beyond to help visitors learn of great places to eat and see while in NOLA. Perfect for a couple.

Nice little getaway!

  • 5 of 5

My husband, 4yo daughter, and I stayed at Vesta's place for a long weekend while visiting NOLA and we had a great time! As was mentioned in a previous review, the neighborhood is still up and coming, but we did not have any issues. I went out early every morning for a run and was not disturbed, and we were sure to be home a bit earlier, since we did not have a car and were taking public transportation everywhere. The place was cozy, but for the time we spent there, was good for the 3 of us. We were looking for a few small things, like dish towels, tissues, and some foil to wrap leftovers in (we actually cooked a few times in the house and had some leftovers), but nothing major. Vesta was amazing! Even on her trip out of the country, she was still accessible via e-mail and responded promptly to our questions. She gave so many suggestions of places to go and things to see, that we didn't have time for it all! I definitely recommend her place if you are looking for someplace to quiet to spend a few days!

QUAINT AND QUIET

  • 5 of 5

This NOLA visit was intended as an off the beaten path girlfriend get-away. Having stayed multiple times in or near the French Quarter, we really hoped for a quieter spot. This fit the bill. I would say, a car might be advisable as the walk to the street car on St. Charles is several blocks away and not sure I would want to make that trek regularly or at night. The area is in transition but definitely trending upward. That being said, you must be at ease in an area that encompasses both sides of the transition --- cute eateries, shops and homes alongside properties that have yet to be revived. There is easy bike access to Garden District, Audubon Park, the zoo and the river paths as well as all the more touristy places via the street car. House is nicely arranged and everything is stocked and ready. Very pleasant stay and exactly as described. Seamless visit made more so by a gracious host.

Perfectly designed space!

  • 5 of 5

Vesta's space was beautiful! The condo is really well designed. We had everything we needed! Vesta also thought of everything, she gave us such detailed information about the sites and restaurants, incredibly helpful! She even left us eggs, juice, milk, coffee and fruit to get us started. Vesta was available throughout our stay to answer questions. We highly recommend Vesta's space!

Food: The nearby groceries are Simone's Market on Oak Street (5 - 10 minute walk), Robert on Jefferson Highway (fine, but not great), and Whole Foods on Magazine St. Oak St nearby has numerous restaurants, cafes, a beer garden (Ale), a wine bar (Oak), and a bakery (Breads on Oak), if you’d like to step out for food. Ninja Sushi and the Mellow Mushroom (pizza) deliver. Chiba has a worthwhile happy hour on weekdays and late at night. The Maple Leaf is the local music joint and you must try Jaque-Imo’s, which is an institution for local food. If there are restaurants you must eat at in New Orleans, MAKE RESERVATIONS if possible. They’re becoming very booked, especially for weekend brunch and dinner. If you’re hungering for a burger, Cowbell nearby has great ones, and Camellia Grill is also a local favorite and close by.

Food recommendations around town: On Oak we have Jaques Imo's, and they have a sister hole-in-the-wall that's a bike ride away called Crabby Jack's. It is an absolutely gluttonous guilty pleasure. If you like bakeries, Breads on Oak is a walk away and has great bread. For coffee, we have Zotz and Rue de La Course on Oak St, but as a coffee snob, my favorite is Hi Volt, which is a ways away where Magazine and the CBD meet. Boucherie is a nearby Creole restaurant that's lovely. Right now the newest fancy restaurant is the Caribbean Room at the Pontchartrain Hotel, and their rooftop bar has a truly breathtaking view. Coquette and Lilette are divine French restaurants on Magazine St, as well is La Petite Grocery. Shaya is near La Petite, has won numerous awards lately, and requires reservations. Willa Jean in the CBD is my favorite bakery and brunch spot, and that is an absolute reservation. A very upscale New Orleans institution for brunch especially is Commander's Palace, and the incredible Lafayette Cemetery is across the street and worth exploring. Atchafalaya is one of my favorite brunch places and very much requires a reservation though it's casual. That whole neighborhood is fabulous to walk in. Amazing tacos can be found at Del Fuego on Magazine St. Mais Arepas has truly killer Colombian food. Restaurant August is another very fancy favorite. n7 is a new under-the-radar French restaurant in the Bywater. It's a hidden gem that literally looks like someone's backyard and doesn't list a phone number. In the Bywater, Marigny area, new hot spots are popping up constantly, but The Joint has fabulous BBQ and Bacchanal has great wine, small plates, music, and a cool vibe. Also in the CBD the Ace Hotel is new and a hot spot. They have a great restaurant called Josephine Estelle, their bar has a fantastic vibe, and they have a great rooftop bar and pool. Seaworthy, which is next door, is a brand new bar/restaurant that features seafood. Primitivo on Oretha Castle Haley is a very cool restaurant focusing on meats. Also the St. Roch Market in the Bywater is a new point of pride for locals and features a large variety of options. Bouligny on Magazine is a chic bar that has a good wine selection, as is Delachaise on St. Charles. Cure on Freret St is a great craft cocktail bar, but if you'd like a nearby shack with a cool grungy vibe, Snake n' Jake's is walking/biking distance from us, though Oak and Ale are the nearby fancier options. Also on Freret St, Magazine St, and now in the Marigny, there’s Dat Dog, which is a must for gourmet hot dogs.
