What was ok?

It was clean. The kitchen was good. It was quiet and in a pleasant neighborhood and the garden is very nice - Berkeley loves its gardens. Refund returned promptly. Parking was on the street and usually not difficult to find a space.

What was not ok?

The kitchen didn't have but one glass - we bought glasses.

The TV was in a terrible position to watch, requiring that one sat on the edge of the bed (no back support) or even better, laying on the bed turning to the right and getting a nasty neck pain.

The bedsheets were past their sell buy date.

There is not one chair besides the wood table chairs to sit and read, etc. No reading lamps at all and all the overheads are so dim you can't read using them.

The so called sofas were actually foam blocks that were uncomfortable for much of anything. The futon is ditto and as the TV is in the bedroom there wasn't much use for the sofas - no light for reading so why bother with the discomfort?

The bathroom has the loudest industrial level exhaust found in any home + the bathroom light was inadequate for doing any makeup at all.

After much fuss about the digital lock system we arrived to find it didn't work, a scary moment, but when calling our host he responded quickly.

My personal idea is that all hosts (a fictional term as one rarely sees them) should spend at least 2-3 days living in their rentals and enjoying their accommodations. Then we might get some real good places to stay with basic requirements for a comfortable holiday.

We stayed for 8 days. The basic cost was not bad but when the service fee and Berkeley taxes were added in it was not so inexpensive. So, that is the kicker - it looks inexpensive but fees do add up making it look less attractive for the various inconveniences.

Owner's Response: Hi Lambert, thank you for your review, it really helps us share and improve the experience of our cottage with future guests. The cottage does not have fixed cable TV. However, the TV is smart and wifi connectable. It is not in a fixed location and is movable throughout the cottage. We keep the TV in the bedroom so that it is out of the way. Guests may relocate it for their use and viewing as required. The sofa and futon are new Ikea sleeper sofas. All furnishings, including table, chairs, bedroom furnishings and linens are also new Ikea. The bluetooth digital door lock is programmed per guest and is provided in lieu of keys as a convenience for guests who are comfortable using bluetooth on their smartphones. We provide keys upon request or on the rare occasion of user error. As you noted, the cottage is secluded, and we value our guest's privacy. However, we do try to make ourselves immediately available as needed or upon guest request. The City of Berkeley has recently implemented a 12% Short Term Rental tax plus enforcement fees. Our cottage is registered with Berkeley and VRBO/Homeaway collects the tax in addition to the rental costs and fees. This will be an additional expense for all guests using a registered Berkeley Short Term Rental.

Loved this cottage!

  • 5 of 5

Had a wonderful stay in Berkeley at this quiet and clean cottage. Would love to stay there again! The owners, Cliff and Liz, have it so nicely furnished... it really was like a home away from home. The nice soaps, shampoos, dishes, and towels made it such a nice getaway. There were so many thoughtful touches. We made use of the outdoor seating and enjoyed being among the flowers and lush garden vegetation. Thank you to Cliff and Liz for providing detailed information before the trip... it was very helpful and much appreciated.

Great little house!

  • 4 of 5

Easy to get all around area from this location from San Fran to Bordega Bay to Half Moon Bay. Enjoyed downtown Berkeley as well. Great restaurants. Two things I would want next time if I booked this house again, DVD player and BBQ grill. We're old school, don't have Netflix or anything else. Had to stay home one night cause of long day touring and really wanted to grill some steaks. Other than that, great place and owner easy to work with.
