Hale Kai means 'Home by the Sea' and sits only 20' from the ocean. Step outside this home onto your own private white sand under the shade of your palm tree garden. Hale Kai sits 32' above the water on a pali and within a few minutes of the house, one can snorkel, swim, scuba dive, hike, surf and kayak and enjoy the pristine beauty of a quiet, serene and romantic ocean side setting. You will love lounging on the shaded and tiled lanai overlooking the Pacific Ocean entertained by the locals...Spinner Dolphins, Green Sea Turtles and Humpback Whales.
The Plantation style home has 3000 square feet of breathtaking views from any part of the house and is surrounded by water in three directions and some of the most pristine coral reefs in all the islands. Located conveniently halfway between kona and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hale Kai makes a great base from which to explore the Hilo and Kona side of the island.
Lulled to sleep by moonlight on the water, Hale Kai will flow into yo
Beaches near the Home: 3 beaches lie close to the house. Sea Cave Beach is a 15 minute walk South & hosts a cool sea cave where one can swim. Beyond the sea cave, the beach is about two hundred yards wide & deep. It is a sand & pebble beach & provides great swimming, sunbathing & snorkeling unless there is a large winter swell.
The second beach is at Milolii Beach Park where sand pockets are surrounded by lava & coral to form a very quiet wading area for kids with great swimming, snorkeling & scuba further out. Great place for kids to play in the tidepools. Milolii Beach Park is about a 5 minute drive from the house.
The third & by far the most spectacular beach is located at Honamolino Bay, a 5 minute drive & then a 20 minute walk from the house. It has been touted as one of the most beautiful beaches in all the islands. A true tropical paradise, the water is almost always very calm with many coconuts palms along a crescent of black sand. A white sand beach can be found on the S. side of the bay.
Location, Location Location: Located conveniently between Kona and Volcano's National Park, this home is a great base from which to explore the island. The lushness of Hilo Town (The City of Orchids) is a beautiful drive through the rain forests of Hawaii Volcano's National Park. The nightlife and restaurants of Kona are less than an hour's drive from the house.
The area is quiet and serene with stunning sunsets and lots of room to explore. The Kings Trail runs through here and can be walked for many miles. The kayaks that come with the house can also be used to explore miles and miles of coastline. Secret beaches, sea caves and lots of marine life can be discovered with a trip either up or down the coast. You will see parts of Hawaii that very few visitors ever see. If you are lucky, the local Spinner Dolphins, Grees Sea Turtles and Humpback Whales may choose to swim with you. A once in a lifetime experience!
National Parks Near Hale Kai: Haunaunau National Historical Monument is North of the house about half an hour and features a comprehensive look back into the ancient Hawaiian culture with a reconstruction of the 'City of Refuge'. Watch an outrigger canoe be carved from a single log as well as sea turtles haul out of the bay. Lots of great info in a beautiful setting. A short walk North at a site called 'Two Step' also hosts some of the islands best snorkeling and diving and a chance to swim with dolphins.
Hawaii Volcano National Park is located about an hour's drive away and features one of the only places in the world where one can hike and watch fresh red hot lava waterfall into the sea. Petroglyghs, rainforests, lava caves, a world class visitor center, Hawaii Volcano National Park should not be missed. Guests should easily plan on spending at least a full day here exploring the park and another full day in Hilo hunting out waterfalls and enjoying the Tsunami Museum among other attractions. Cancellations more than 90 days will incur a 10% fee of the total rental price. Cancellations less than 90 days will incur a 50% fee of the total bill.

About Mike or Jamie Selby
We simply love Hawaii and being on, under and on top of the blue Pacific Ocean. As naturalists we love the water sports and wildlife we encounter on our wild stretch of coast line. We normally live at 7600 feet in the Sierra's and love to ski. Hale Kai provides a nice balance for us from our snow haven where we can play in the water snorkeling, swimming, cliff jumping, surfing, boogie boarding, scuba diving and exploring one of the most beautiful islands in the Pacific.
Mike or Jamie Selby purchased this House in 2006
Why Mike or Jamie Selby chose Milolii
We fell in love with this property and built a home on Makahiki Point because as young newlyweds we swam with Spinner Dolphins near here. They played with us for about 6 hours and when we decided to have kids, we wanted them to share that kind of experience. Well, not only have they shared it but have swam with dolphins and whales many times since then. As art lovers, we wanted a house that was pure artistry and bought local art to fill the walls with color where we could enjoy the property inside and out. Raw, natural and away from all the traffic and sirens of Kona, we just love coming back to Hale Kai after a day exploring either above or below the waterline!
What makes this House unique
You simply can't get closer to the Pacific and keep your feet dry. We proposed and received a special twenty foot, instead of forty foot set back for the house so we can watch fish right off the lanai as well as hear whales breach and let the waves lap us to sleep. As the last house in the subdivision we feel blessed to enjoy unobstructed views of the ocean as far West, North and South as far as the eye can see!

Photos are accurate, although the landscape simply cannot be captured on film. The black lava cliffs are dramatic and other-worldly. The house sits high on a cliff with spectacular views in every direction from the spacious deck. We watched scuba divers and fishermen use the nearby cliffs off to the left of the house. The floors have nice tile work throughout. The house has an easy to maintain informal style that we all able to relax and enjoy. The drive down from the main road is windy and steep. If you want to explore the unique terrain, bring supportive hiking boots and for hiking to beaches, you’ll need water socks/sandals for navigating over the uneven surfaces of this extraordinary landscape. This property is great for both relaxing and adventures. The owner provides ample suggestions for enjoying this property and surrounding areas. A highlight of the entire trip was the day at Homolino Beach. We had it entirely to ourselves (on a week day).
We love sharing Hale Kai with people like you Deb who can really enjoy its rugged beauty and raw nature from the comforts of a well appointed home only 20 feet from the water. Thanks so much for staying with us and we look forward to serving you in the future!
Great home with a gorgeous view!
We very much enjoyed our 10 day stay at Hale Kai! The home was perfect for our family of five. The kitchen was well stocked with pots and pans, utensils, coffee maker etc. The washer and dryer made our stay so easy. The ocean view was incredible! The huge patio had a grill, dining table and chairs for relaxing. We spent every evening enjoying the sunset and waves. However, keep in mind that this house is about an hour from town and the white sand beaches. I did not do my research on the size of the island and location of places we would want to visit and we spent a lot of time driving. However, Mike (the owner) did an exceptional job proving us a list of wonderful places and experiences on the island and directions to neat areas we would not have known about. He responded to every question and request in a timely manner. I would definitely recommend staying in Hale Kai if you want to get away from it all (and don’t mind driving)!
So happy you enjoyed our home on the ocean Jennifer! We love Hale Kai and the reason we built the house was to "get away from it all" as you say. It is quiet, close to nature and provides great access to the crystalline waters of the Pacific... which is the whole reason we came to Hawaii!
Not what we expected!
If you want to stay closer to the crashing waves than you ever have before. This is the place for you! Which may be a problem if you’re a light sleeper! If however you want in Hawaii to swim, walk on the beach, go to the pub or out for dinner or shop, forget this place! It’s at the edge of a huge barren lava field in a rather run-down neighborhood, miles from anywhere! There are no beaches and no restaurants. The drive down the hill is challenging especially after dark or in the fog (we had both). The house is a good size, but tired furnishings and unreliable (solar) hot water. The owners gave excellent pre-instructions, but the location is way too far from anywhere. We spent the week in the car driving. We will not return…
We are never happy when there is a mismatch of expectations versus experience. A vast majority of our guests enjoy the close proximity to the ocean and walk the 15 minutes down the coast to a beach or hike into Honomalino Bay to one of the best beaches in the State. Its interesting you say the neighborhood is "run down" when there are dozens of high end rentals in our little part of the state. As to the barren lava fields... well, its the Big Island, it IS a volcano. As to the solar water heater being unreliable, well, we have a family of 4 and we have never had a problem. so I am not sure what was going on there. In any event, we are sorry you had less than a positive experience. I would suggest you rent right in town next time so you can be close to all that makes you happy.
My most recent visit to Hale Kai was my sixth, going back to 2010. The ambiance is everything I look for: location on the ocean, gorgeous sunsets, large spacious house, rap-around lanai on the upper level overlooking the ocean, privacy, whale watching (I've seen humpbacks on all my visits), and all the amenities. I've spent considerable time on all the islands except Lanai, and I've learned that they're all very different. The obvious difference between the Big Island and all the others is size. Driving distances are significantly longer, but, with the exception of Molokai, traffic is generally better. In fact, one of the longest stretches of open road in the state is on the way from Hale Kai to the volcanoes, a beautiful black sand beach, and the southernmost point in the USA. No matter where you stay on the island, traveling distances are significant, and Hale Kai is better than most locations, and certainly as good as any. On my last visit, I went several times to beaches north of the Kona airport. These were long days, but without rushing, I was always back at Hale Kai in time for sunset. I frequently stopped at nice restaurants for lunch, so I felt that I was able to enjoy both worlds. Also, staying in a condo in a highly congested area is not my idea of a vacation!
Another noteworthy item to me is that when you rent Hale Kai you're renting a FAMILY'S HOME. You're not renting from corporate America, or even a local rental agency. That fact has always governed my treatment of the home.
I'll be back in 2020!
Thanks so much for your review Don! Reading through your review I can see you enjoy Hale Kai as much (or more) than we do. It makes renting to you very gratifying for us. We toiled and lost some blood building Hale Kai just 20 feet from the ocean but now that its done, there are always tears when we pull out of the driveway for the last time on our fall vacation. As the place where we first swam with wild Spinner Dolphins, it has its own Hawaiian Magic and we tap into it every time we are there. Every so often during the sunset we can hear the call of the Cowry Shell and the faint beating of the drums of the night marchers preparing for the march along the ocean. One of the calmest most relaxing places in the world.
Lovely ocean views
Nice quite place away from the crowds of Kona.
Spectacular views of the ocean, sealife & the stars!
Our family were overwhelmed by this property! Amazing accommodations for all 5 of us. The trip to/from Kona was longer than I expected so Plan B went into place which was purchasing more food at Costco than we originally planned so we could stay in for more meals. We watched whale, bottlenose dolphin, spinner dolphin & fish right from the lanai. Simply amazing experience!
I am so happy you were able to see the Humpback Whales. That is an awesome experience... and right from the lanai. Fantastic! Thanks so much for the review and we hope you come back and stay with us again sometime Andrea!
