About the property

Hale Kai means 'Home by the Sea' and sits only 20' from the ocean. Step outside this home onto your own private white sand under the shade of your palm tree garden. Hale Kai sits 32' above the water on a pali and within a few minutes of the house, one can snorkel, swim, scuba dive, hike, surf and kayak and enjoy the pristine beauty of a quiet, serene and romantic ocean side setting. You will love lounging on the shaded and tiled lanai overlooking the Pacific Ocean entertained by the locals...Spinner Dolphins, Green Sea Turtles and Humpback Whales.

The Plantation style home has 3000 square feet of breathtaking views from any part of the house and is surrounded by water in three directions and some of the most pristine coral reefs in all the islands. Located conveniently halfway between kona and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hale Kai makes a great base from which to explore the Hilo and Kona side of the island.

Lulled to sleep by moonlight on the water, Hale Kai will flow into yo

Beaches near the Home: 3 beaches lie close to the house. Sea Cave Beach is a 15 minute walk South & hosts a cool sea cave where one can swim. Beyond the sea cave, the beach is about two hundred yards wide & deep. It is a sand & pebble beach & provides great swimming, sunbathing & snorkeling unless there is a large winter swell.

The second beach is at Milolii Beach Park where sand pockets are surrounded by lava & coral to form a very quiet wading area for kids with great swimming, snorkeling & scuba further out. Great place for kids to play in the tidepools. Milolii Beach Park is about a 5 minute drive from the house.

The third & by far the most spectacular beach is located at Honamolino Bay, a 5 minute drive & then a 20 minute walk from the house. It has been touted as one of the most beautiful beaches in all the islands. A true tropical paradise, the water is almost always very calm with many coconuts palms along a crescent of black sand. A white sand beach can be found on the S. side of the bay.

Location, Location Location: Located conveniently between Kona and Volcano's National Park, this home is a great base from which to explore the island. The lushness of Hilo Town (The City of Orchids) is a beautiful drive through the rain forests of Hawaii Volcano's National Park. The nightlife and restaurants of Kona are less than an hour's drive from the house.

The area is quiet and serene with stunning sunsets and lots of room to explore. The Kings Trail runs through here and can be walked for many miles. The kayaks that come with the house can also be used to explore miles and miles of coastline. Secret beaches, sea caves and lots of marine life can be discovered with a trip either up or down the coast. You will see parts of Hawaii that very few visitors ever see. If you are lucky, the local Spinner Dolphins, Grees Sea Turtles and Humpback Whales may choose to swim with you. A once in a lifetime experience!

National Parks Near Hale Kai: Haunaunau National Historical Monument is North of the house about half an hour and features a comprehensive look back into the ancient Hawaiian culture with a reconstruction of the 'City of Refuge'. Watch an outrigger canoe be carved from a single log as well as sea turtles haul out of the bay. Lots of great info in a beautiful setting. A short walk North at a site called 'Two Step' also hosts some of the islands best snorkeling and diving and a chance to swim with dolphins.

Hawaii Volcano National Park is located about an hour's drive away and features one of the only places in the world where one can hike and watch fresh red hot lava waterfall into the sea. Petroglyghs, rainforests, lava caves, a world class visitor center, Hawaii Volcano National Park should not be missed. Guests should easily plan on spending at least a full day here exploring the park and another full day in Hilo hunting out waterfalls and enjoying the Tsunami Museum among other attractions. Cancellations more than 90 days will incur a 10% fee of the total rental price. Cancellations less than 90 days will incur a 50% fee of the total bill.

About Mike or Jamie Selby

We simply love Hawaii and being on, under and on top of the blue Pacific Ocean. As naturalists we love the water sports and wildlife we encounter on our wild stretch of coast line. We normally live at 7600 feet in the Sierra's and love to ski. Hale Kai provides a nice balance for us from our snow haven where we can play in the water snorkeling, swimming, cliff jumping, surfing, boogie boarding, scuba diving and exploring one of the most beautiful islands in the Pacific.

Mike or Jamie Selby purchased this house in 2006

Why Mike or Jamie Selby chose Milolii

We fell in love with this property and built a home on Makahiki Point because as young newlyweds we swam with Spinner Dolphins near here. They played with us for about 6 hours and when we decided to have kids, we wanted them to share that kind of experience. Well, not only have they shared it but have swam with dolphins and whales many times since then. As art lovers, we wanted a house that was pure artistry and bought local art to fill the walls with color where we could enjoy the property inside and out. Raw, natural and away from all the traffic and sirens of Kona, we just love coming back to Hale Kai after a day exploring either above or below the waterline!

What makes this house unique

You simply can't get closer to the Pacific and keep your feet dry. We proposed and received a special twenty foot, instead of forty foot set back for the house so we can watch fish right off the lanai as well as hear whales breach and let the waves lap us to sleep. As the last house in the subdivision we feel blessed to enjoy unobstructed views of the ocean as far West, North and South as far as the eye can see!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hot Kona Coffee on the deck overlooking the lava cliff with the sound of turquoise waves...now that's peace and tranquility! Thank you for hosting us at your beautiful home, offering both great local fun and convience to Hawaiian Volcanos National Park and Kona. Try to be home for sunset, wine, cheese and bread while the tranquility returns and the breeze refreshes.

Notes:
Hale Kai sits on Makahiki Point, (in Hawaiian, the Place of Peace) and an ancient shrine is located just a couple hundred feet from the house. This is sacred land where the blue sea offers up such daily treats as swimming with Spinner Dolphins, Humpback Whales and thousands of tropical fish. Hale Kai is located exactly 20 feet from the water which makes it the closest house to the water in all the islands. If you are a water person, this is your house! Hale Kai is located in a private setting where hiking, snorkeling, kayaking and diving are a way of life for us. We love the water and look forward to sharing this special place with you. We have connections with local business's who specialize in deep sea fishing, dolphin tours, whale watching, dive and snorkel tours, kayak lessons and tours as well as naturalist excursions. Please contact us for more info.

A little piece of heaven

  • 5 of 5

First of all, if we were allowed to give 10 stars, I would. We have been to the big island about 5 times and this was truly our best experience. The house was wonderful. Located at the end of a quiet street right on the ocean. We took the owners advice and stocked up at Costco before arriving. Most of our activities were to the south this time, volcanoes, green sand beaches, so the house was perfectly located. We actually spent more time at the house than planned due to the great location and amenities. I think the best complement I can give is, if we were to move to Hawaii, this is the house we would buy. Thank you for making our vacation memorable.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much Larry! We built the house so my wife and I and our kids could swim with the local Spinner Dolphins just like we did once nearby on a multi-day kayak trip down the coast. We put everything we could into making Hale Kai truly a little piece of paradise. The quiet and serene location is perfect for us because we are water people and probably spend 50% of our time snorkeling, paddling and exploring the more wild side of the Big Island to the South just like you did. My wife and I are both thankful that guests like you enjoy it as much as we do! You are always welcome!!!

Hale Kai was AWESOME!

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful ocean front home was a wonderful home base during our two week stay on the big island. The house was located near our favourite snorkeling beach, Honomalino, which we visited almost every other day. We spent many hours lounging on the lanai and saw beautiful sunsets every night. We would recommend this beautiful home to anyone looking to explore the big island!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much Christine! Its guests like you that really like sharing our little piece of paradise with. We are outdoor people who spend a lot of our time in the water and near the water and thats what the house was built for. We swam with dolphins for 6 hours on one of our kayak trips down the Big Island and thats when we started looking for property here. We wanted our children to share the magic we had already been blessed with. We now covet every day and night we get to spend at the house just like you did! -Mike and Jamie

Quiet remote spot on the Big Island

  • 4 of 5

Just returned from a week on the Big Island. Really no significant complaints about the rental. As described, it sits at the end of the road, oceanfront, abutting up to volcanic cliffs. Really pretty. House is in great shape and comfortable. Do realize, however, that if you are renting and plan on doing a lot in the Kona area, that is in an hour drive each way on winding roads. Heading south toward South Point or Volcanoes National Park is perfect though. Nice easy drive on pretty straight roads. All in all, we had a nice relaxing week.

Simply beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful vacation spot --- particularly if you're looking for something off the beaten path and away from the touristy bustle. The house was great with tons of space to relax and enjoy the serenity of the oceanfront. Everything you need is there --- with a fully equipped kitchen and a gas grill on the porch. The snorkeling is crazy --- so many beautiful fish, crabs, lobster... even saw puffer fish, sea turtles and reef shark. We took day trips to see the volcano, take a coffee tour, attend a luau, swim with the manta rays, and charter a fishing trip --- where my daughter caught a 238 lb. blue marlin! The drive into Kona takes about an hour, so you definitely get away from the noise and get to experience the local flavor of the island. The sunsets are stunning right off the porch and the sound of the ocean is all you hear. Loved it!

Breathtaking

  • 5 of 5

What a truly amazing place. The views were incredible and the location is was very isolating. The crash of the ocean put us to sleep every night. It sometimes felt like we were in a whole different world. Be warned, you are a pretty good drive away from Captain Cook and certainly a ways a away from Kona, Other than that, we will be back when time permits.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your thoughtful review Chris! As you know we love Hale Kai and try to spend as much time there as work will allow. We built it as our dream house on the edge of the great Pacific Ocean. Closer than any house in Miloli'i at just 20 feet from the waves! We know we are a ways from any urban area and thats how we wanted it. If one is into the bar, restaurant and shopping scene, then stay in Kona, but it you love the sound of the waves over sirens, snorkeling over shopping and a quiet Mai-Tai at sunset over a noisy bar, than Hale Kai is the THE PLACE to be! May the Aloha you experienced stay with you a long long time... until you are able to come back! Mike

Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time on the Big Island. The house is spacious and peaceful. Its the perfect place to unwind. Going to bed every night listening to the waves is amazing. The owners are very responsive. If we are ever on the Big Island in the future, we would love to stay here again.
