About John and Sandee Key

Welcome to The Key Hole. We have owned this property since 2003. It has been a blessing to our family. We are a family of five with three girls who have grown up paddle boating up to the “Carp Store,” tubing behind the boat, doing the polar plunge over Easter break, and catching hundreds of brim in their “nest.” We have our best family times here and are hoping you will too!

John and Sandee Key purchased this cottage in 2003

Great Escape Weekend

  • 5 of 5

Three of my former students and I met in Smith Mountain Lake for a reunion. We had a blast!! This cottage was exactly what we needed. The photos do not do it justice, and we grew to love the back porch, especially the screened portion. We were initially concerned about the lack of wifi, but it ended up being a benefit. Also, the phone reception was good. There was plenty of space for the four of us to be comfortable, I only wish that we spent more time on the lake in the paddleboat or swimmimg, but that was our fault. If you are looking for a quiet place to spend time with friends, this is the place for you. Oh, and I almost forgot, the owners were very responsive to my texts! We will definitely be back!

Wonderful!

  • 4 of 5

My family and I recently stayed at the keyhole and we had a wonderful experience. The shallow lake water was great for my 6 year old to swim in as she is still a beginner swimmer. She thoroughly enjoyed going to feed the pet carp just across the cove at the Smith mountain lake dock. We loved having the paddle boat and canoe to take out on the lake. It's a great private setting in the back of a cove with an awesome yard and the back deck is the place to be! The only reason I am giving this 4 stars and not 5 is due to cleanliness. If they are paying someone to clean the house then I would have expected more. There was a lot of dust on the dressers, dirt and leaves on the kitchen floor when we walked in, and the grill has not been cleaned in a long time. We were looking forward to cooking out on the grill but there was about 2 to 3 inches of built up lard and aluminum in the bottom of it, that we didn't feel like it was safe to use and the cleaning brush provided was broken. Overall, it was a wonderful vacation and we will definitely be back next year!

Thank you John and Sandee for letting us stay at your lake house!!

Great place to escape to for a long weekend

  • 5 of 5

We came here to get away from the city for Memorial Day weekend and enjoy the lake. We loved the house. It's in a great location at the end of a quiet cove. It is fully equipped with a canoe, paddleboat, horseshoe pit, grill, board games, fire pits (yes, there were two). We caught fish right off of the dock. It has a huge deck, which is partially screened in (great if you want to enjoy the outdoors without the bugs). The owners, John and Sandee, were unbelievably nice and helpful. So is the neighbor, Dennis. We enjoyed breakfasts down the street at Lumpkins Grill and venturing out to wineries and breweries. Be sure to pack some towels, bed sheets and some water bottles. Would absolutely come back again. Nothing but great things to say.

Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Once again Sandee and John over did it.

We have stayed there at the cottage on several occasions before and loved each time. This time, Sandee and John went the extra mile and had me flowers and a great scented candle waiting so when I walked in with my wife.. Bam!! The surprise on Sarah's face was priceless.

Thanks Sandee and John.

As always, we had a great time and thanks for everything!! Can't wait to return!! o)
