About the property

Hale Iki is NOT than just another place to stay - it is an experience! A fresh, light-filled, off-grid tiny house nestled in a clearing in the rainforest, Hale Iki made its media debut on HGTVs Tiny House Hunters. Since then it’s been upgraded with a solar refrigerator and a multitude of Pinterest-worthy additions. If you think tiny house living might be for you, we encourage you to come stay with us!

WHAT SOME OF OUR GUESTS HAVE TO SAY:

"This place is so magical. The first 30 minutes we were here we only whispered because we didn't want to disturb the peace and quiet!"

"Our only regret is that we didn't stay longer. Hale Iki is a very special place."

"You can tell how much caring was put into everything - from the log in the fireplace to the yoga mats to the pancakes for breakfast, everything was thought of!"

Perfect for couples or solo travelers, Hale Iki makes you feel like you’re a world away, even though you're just minutes Volcanoes National Park. Take your french press coffee out on the lanai, or grill up your farmers market finds on our built-in gas grill. BEFORE YOU BOOK

Hale Iki is a very special place. Please read the section below, just to make sure it’s the right special place for you!

1. Accessibility. The house is much more accessible than many tiny houses, but there are a few steps along the way. There are two steps up to the lanai, and one into the house. Good news - unlike some tiny homes the bed is on the main floor, so no ladders to climb down in the middle of the night!

2. Water. We put the rainforest to good use! Rainwater is collected and used to run the house, which is perfect for showering and doing dishes, but not for drinking. A bottle of water will be provided, and there is a water dispenser in the kitchen if you need refills.

3. Lighting. All our electricity comes from the sun. The batteries charge up during the day and are stored for use at night. Turning off lights or electronics when not in use will help the energy last. The house has plenty of windows and amazing skylights.

4. Temperature. At 3,500 feet, Volcano can be a bit wet, and the temperature is about 10 degrees cooler than at the coast. We find it refreshing — a break from the heat and humidity! Hale Iki does not have an indoor heater, but there is a chiminea (outdoor fireplace) on the lanai. Our daytime temperatures are wonderfully mild, so just open the windows and doors for a refreshing breeze.

The Big Island has 10 of the world’s 14 climate zones. It is always wise to dress in layers and to bring a light jacket, especially if you are visiting Volcanoes National Park at night (and you should visit at night!).

5. Location. Located on just over 3/4 of an acre and backing up to the forest reserve, Hale Iki is very private. There are few lights, which means spectacular stargazing when the sky is clear. Flashlights are available for those late night returns home, and motion sensing lights guide you along the lanai.

6. Connectivity. Time to let go of all your wires and obligations! Being off-grid and hidden on a large lot, internet isn’t currently an option. Some cell service is available (depends on your provider and where you are standing). We do have a small TV and DVD player for evening electronic entertainment. You can rent recent titles at the Lower Store in Volcano Village or at the Red Box at the Foodland in Kea’au. A bluetooth speaker will let you hook up and play your tunes wire free.

6. Wildlife. All of Volcano is a rainforest and with it comes wildlife. There are lots of birds in our forest, including pheasants which like to wander around in little packs. You’ll see them along the road and sometimes in the yard. They are fun to watch. We also have wild pigs — they have no interest in people, but love to tear up the yard looking for bugs! They are easily scared off. Just think of it as some entertainment and stories to tell when you get home!

We prefer 2 night or longer stays (you really need that time to explore the area!), but will consider one-nights. If you're visiting the volcano and don't want to drive back late at night, please message us to check availability! We would love to host you for an evening.

There are some small, convenience-style stores in Volcano, but if you don't want to spend your valuable vacation time shopping, concierge groceries available with advanced notice. We do have a nice selection of cooking basics offered free of charge. Please ask us if you need a complete list.

We welcome everyone and would love to have you stay with us!

Looking for something slightly larger? Please see our other rental property, Hau‘oli Place (the Happy Place!) which comfortably sleeps 4.

*All prices included Hawaii GET tax of 4.166% and Hawaii Transit Accommodations Tax of 9.25%. You will receive a line itemized invoiced upon checkin. Mahalo!

If you are into room service, spa days and hanging out at the hotel pool...don't bother.

But if your into quiet and tranquil then this is for you...set in a nice patch of land in the middle of lust forest this tiny home is it. It is equipped with everything you need from a full gas stove inside and a BBQ grill outside. There is a full kitchen along with full bath, a queen sized Therapeutic Foam mattress bed. The deck is great for enjoying your coffee in the morning or chilling in the moonlight. You can light up the fire pit and listen to nature serenade you. This beats any hotel on any day....owners are great and good care of you.

Perfect!

What a beautiful place! It looks cute in the pictures and is even better in person. Perfectly appointed with everything you need. Great location right by Volcanoes National Park, store, and restaurants, yet feels secluded. The hosts were wonderful and left us homemade goodies and a bottle of wine to enjoy while stargazing from the incredible lanai.
