About the property

THE SPACE

Hale Iki is a fresh, light-filled, off-grid tiny house which made its media debut on HGTVs Tiny House Hunters. Since then it’s been upgraded with a solar refrigerator and a multitude of Pinterest-worthy additions. If you think tiny house living might be for you, we encourage you to come visit, see how it’s put together, and explore all the nooks and crannies.

Perfect for couples or solo travelers, Hale Iki is nestled in the rainforest just outside Volcanoes National Park in a cleaning surrounded by a beautiful 3/4 acres of ferns and ohio trees. Take your french press coffee out on the lanai, or grill up your farmers market finds on our built-in gas grill. Snuggly bath robes and a comfy queen size bed piled with blankets keep you toasty on cool Volcano nights. Indoor/outdoor living will make you wonder how you could ever need more than 240 square feet!

We don't have many reviews on VRBO, but have all 5-stars on other services with 40+ reviews! Our most frequent comment: "I wish I had stayed longer!"

BEFORE YOU BOOK

Hale Iki is a very special place. Please read the section below, just to make sure it’s the right special place for you!

1. Accessibility. The house is much more accessible than many tiny houses, but there are a few steps along the way. There are two steps up to the lanai, and one into the house. Good news - unlike some tiny homes the bed is on the main floor, so no ladders to climb down in the middle of the night!

2. Water. We put the rainforest to good use! Rainwater is collected and used to run the house, which is perfect for showering and doing dishes, but not for drinking. Two bottles of water will be provided, and there is a water dispenser on the lanai if you need refills.

3. Lighting. All our electricity comes from the sun. The batteries charge up during the day and are stored for use at night. Turning off lights or electronics when not in use will help the energy last. The house has plenty of windows and amazing skylights.

4. Temperature. At 3,500 feet, Volcano can be a bit wet, and the temperature is about 10 degrees cooler than at the coast. We find it refreshing — a break from the heat and humidity! Hale Iki does not have an indoor heater, but there is a chiminea (outdoor fireplace) on the lanai. Our daytime temperatures are wonderfully mild, so just open the windows and doors for a refreshing breeze.

The Big Island has 10 of the world’s 14 climate zones. It is always wise to dress in layers and to bring a light jacket, especially if you are visiting Volcanoes National Park at night (and you should visit at night!).

5. Location. Located on just over 3/4 of an acre and backing up to the forest reserve, Hale Iki is very private. There are few lights, which means spectacular stargazing when the sky is clear. Flashlights are available for those late night returns home, and motion sensing lights guide you along the lanai.

6. Connectivity. Time to let go of all your wires and obligations! Being off-grid and hidden on a large lot, internet isn’t currently an option. Some cell service is available. We do have a small TV and DVD player for evening electronic entertainment. You can rent recent titles at the Lower Store in Volcano Village or at the Red Box at the Foodland in Kea’au. A bluetooth speaker will let you hook up and play your tunes wire free.

6. Wildlife. All of Volcano is a rainforest and with it comes wildlife. There are lots of birds in our forest, including peasants which like to wander around in little packs. You’ll see them along the road and sometimes in the yard. They are fun to watch. We also have wild pigs — they have no interest in people, but love to tear up the yard looking for bugs! They are easily scared off. Just think of it as some entertainment and stories to tell when you get home!

GUEST ACCESS

You will have your own key and have the whole place to yourself. Your own tiny Hawaiian paradise.

INTERACTION WITH GUESTS

We live in Volcano and would love to welcome you to your new home. Our past interaction with guests has ranged from sharing dinner and wine, to hardly seeing them at all! Wherever you fall on the spectrum, if you need anything during your stay, we're just a phone call or text away.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Hale Iki is located 35 minutes from Hilo and about 2 hours from Kona. It’s in the back of a quiet neighborhood on just over 3/4 of an acre, backing up to the national forest reserve.

Just across the highway is Volcano Village where you will find several restaurants, a community center, Volcano Art Gallery, and the wonderful early morning Sunday Volcano Farmers Market. 3 miles up Highway 11 is the entrance to Volcanoes National Park and the bubbling Kilauea Crater.

GETTING AROUND

This is a big island and a rental car is required to get the most out of your experience.

OTHER THINGS TO NOTE

Hale Iki is one of the few vacation rentals that accepts single night reservations and short notice stays. If you're visiting the volcano and don't want to drive back late at night, please message us! We would love to host you for an evening.

There are some small, convenience-style stores in Volcano, but if you don't want to spend your valuable vacation time shopping, concierge groceries available with advanced notice.

Perfect!

What a beautiful place! It looks cute in the pictures and is even better in person. Perfectly appointed with everything you need. Great location right by Volcanoes National Park, store, and restaurants, yet feels secluded. The hosts were wonderful and left us homemade goodies and a bottle of wine to enjoy while stargazing from the incredible lanai.
