About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6)

Come enjoy this wonderful lakeshore cottage up the Gunflint Trail 38 miles from Grand Marias. We are open May through September. Our cottage is located on beautiful Loon Lake adjacent to the BWCA. Loon Lake is known for BIG fish, the question is whether or not you can catch them! You will have your own private dock for swimming, fishing and watching sunsets. There is a canoe provided so you can explore the lake. You can arrange motorized fishing boat rental or bring your own boat to the launch just down the road from the cottage.

Take advantage of direct access to the Boundary Waters Canoe and Wilderness Area (BWCA) from our cottage. The BWCA is one of North America's largest wilderness areas with over one thousand lakes and streams within its boundaries.

When you're done playing outside, come inside to relax and get comfortable in your private, cozy knotty pine cottage. We have two bedrooms and a newly remodeled bathroom. One bedroom is furnished with a pillow top queen sized bed and the other bedroom has a double bed and pine bunkbeds. Our source of water is lake drawn from Loon Lake. Our living space allows you to continue to enjoy the lakeview from our large picture window.

We feel confident you will enjoy your stay and exploring this rustic area. Don't forget to get your camera ready for the moose and other wildlife often seen on the drive up to our cottage on the Gunflint Trail.

About Scott and Anna Sorensen

We are originally from the Twin Cities. We moved to Grand Marais in 2003 looking to live in a smaller town. We love living in this community and raising our two children here. We enjoy playing outside and serving others. Our Griffon is with us wherever we go! Best dog ever!! We enjoy sharing our cottage with people who enjoy the North Shore as much as we do!

Scott and Anna Sorensen purchased this cottage in 2005

Great little cabin in the woods with a wonderful view of the lake!

  • 5 of 5

I booked this cabin for myself, my husband, and my mother and sister. We wanted to experience the boundary water area and my mom wanted to visit Grand Marais where she and my Dad had had so many good times. My only request was a cabin on a lake with loons! Loon Lake seemed like a perfect match. We lucked out and had a loon Friday and Saturday night, a male, but by Sunday his mate had joined him and they were happily swim around the lake. It truly was awesome!

We loved the cabin and it totally suited our needs. The kitchen was well stocked with utensils and cookware. Although they are in need of a new wine bottle opener! =) The furnishings were comfortable as well.

We worried about bugs, and were swarmed with mesquitos and black flies Friday night, but they seemed to move out with the rain, as Saturday - Monday they were much more manageable. We spent a lot of time on the dock watching the sunsets/sunrises, but didn't make it out on the canoe. We took a day trip every day and loved seeing the waterfalls in the area and riding the ski lift.

Thank you for allowing us to stay and enjoy a little bit of lake heaven!

Fun family weekend

  • 5 of 5

My little family of 4 had a great long weekend at the Sorenson's cabin. My 4 year old son loved sleeping in the bunk beds and did NOT want to leave. He keeps saying he really REALLY wants to go again! We got caught in a quick downpour on the canoe our first day, but we were all laughing about it soon enough! We rented a pontoon from Loon Lake Lodge the 2nd day for a couple hours and had the entire lake to ourselves. Didn't catch anything, but a couple small bass. Also, the malts at Trail Center were delicious! We loved watching the sunset, building campfires and telling "scary" stories. Beautiful, peaceful and so quiet.

Quiet getaway

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our long weekend at this quiet cabin off the Gunflint trail. Very comfortable for our party of 3 adults and 2 kids. It was our first time on the trail and we were smitten with the area. We heard loons from the cabin and enjoyed the silence. The view of the lake and the little island from the cabin is really nice. Only issue for me was the very loud refrigerator that kicks on in the main room from time to time, interrupting the peacefulness.

you won't regret it!

  • 5 of 5

It's exactly what you have hoped for! After our miscarriage last month, my wife and I got to spend 4 beautiful days at the cabin. We got to rest, reflect, pray and name our baby in this retreat. The view from the window was perfect and it's so beautiful and quiet there. We fished, made fire, played games, watched movies, enjoyed starry nights and cooked nice meals at the cabin. We can't wait to come back again in the future. Thank you for a very nice time!

Much needed get away

  • 5 of 5

We had a group of 6 guys stay. The house was very comfortable and well supplied for all our sleeping and cooking needs. Beautiful setting on Loon Lake. It's a short walk down to the fire pit and dock, and the canoe that comes with the rental. We did bring up 2 of our own canoe's. There is a small landing just down the road to put in your canoe, and just a short paddle away from the dock. We paddled a lot, a couple of us portaged to Crab Lake and fished there and caught some nice small mouth bass and northerns. Caught a lot of small Bass on Loon lake. We were lucky enough to see a black bear on the side of the road. There are eagles, and it's awesome to hear the loon's call over the water. We had a mother Loon and her 2 adolescent young come within 15 feet of the canoe. Everything went smoothly with the rental. All was as it says it was. We didn't meet Scott or Anna, but the welcome letter explains everything and their phone numbers are there if we needed to contact them. It's such a beautiful, remote area to visit if you never have. A place to get back to nature and enjoy God's creation with out distractions of our sometimes hectic lifestyle. We would definitely stay there again and would recommend it to others to go there.

Our favorite place on the trail!

  • 5 of 5

This was our third stay at Scott and Anna's cottage and our best trip by far. Visiting the trail and staying at the cottage is something we look forward to every year. For the past couple of years, we've taken the Crab Lake trail and canoed Loon Lake, but this year we switched things up and rented a boat on Gunflint Lake (only $20/hr and so worth it) and took the boat to the Bridal Falls hike. The falls aren't flowing as well in the fall but it was still a fun little hike. The best part of this trip was finding the High Cliffs trail behind the Gunflint lodge. The views are worth the uphill hike, and we got engaged at the top of the cliffs this year! We celebrated with great company at the Hungry Jack Lodge (our new favorite spot to eat and drink on the trail) and even caught a glimpse of the Northern Lights. Thanks, as always, Scott and Anna for providing such a wonderful getaway. This is one year we won't forget!
