About Jim Kachenmeister
Jim and his wife, Debbie, bought property near Lucca in 2003 and have permanently relocated to this beautiful area. We have lived in Europe for the past 20 years (London and Stockholm before moving to Italy). Jim has a passion for cooking and is happy to share his secrets to making a perfect pizza in a wood burning oven. We are also happy to help you plan your itinerary while in this area, including pre-booking your museum tickets in Florence to avoid the lines, booking our favourite restaurants for you, telling you the best local wineries for tastings and tours and more.
Jim Kachenmeister purchased this Farmhouse in 2009
Why Jim Kachenmeister chose Capannori
The location of il Borghetto in San Gennaro is superb. In the medium hills above the Lucca plain and below the historic village of San Gennaro, we offer a piece of solitude in the Tuscan hills. Views of vineyards and olive groves are offered from every vantage point on the property. The newly built property features the stones of the 14th century building that stood on this very spot. Modern inside, the apartment retains the Tuscan charm of handmade terra cotta floors and chestnut beam ceilings throughout. It is an easy 20 minute hike up the hill to San Gennaro, where you can dine at the local trattoria, Il Corno Rosso. Hiking paths (all well marked by Club Alpina d'Italia) are all around the area.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
The 5 x 12 metre swimming pool is on the highest point of the property, giving lovely views back toward Lucca. Gated entrance for security.

A beautifully restored farmhouse on lovely grounds
Il Borghetto has been a perfect place for us to stay for a month each year for the last 4 years. It is beautifully situated in the hills near Lucca. The location is great for exploring the Lucca area, Florence, Pisa, Chianti area, and over to the Ligurian Coast. Close by are many wineries where you can enjoy the Tuscan wines. There are great restaurants nearby. A hiking trail is adjacent to the property. The apartments are well-equipped and very comfortable. Jim is an excellent host and source of information about the area. We hope to return again and again!
Lovely location & beautiful property
We had a fabulous 4 days at Il Borghetto - partly thanks to the excellence of our hosts Jim & Debbie. With their attention to detail, excellent local knowledge and contacts, plus their ability to speak good Italian, we could not fault it. The property and specifically our apartment were well finished, very clean & tidy and in such a lovely setting. From there we were able to visit Lucca & Florence - both a must for any traveller - and relax around the pool if we needed to. We'll be back
Perfect in every way!
After traveling in Italy for four weeks Il Borghetto was the perfect way to end our trip. The property is beautiful inside and out. Comfortable beds, modern kitchen and baths, and well equipped for cooking. The nicer, newer quality of the utensils, dishes, furniture etc at Il Borghetto are not always found in rental homes. Jim was very helpful with recommendations and quick to respond to any questions we had. We were able to travel to Florence, Castellano Verrazano winery, San Giminagno and Sienna with ease. We always looked forward to relaxing by the pool after a day of sightseeing. I highly recommend this property!
Wonderful house on the countryside
After a very warm welcoming by Jim we enjoyed a very relaxing stay at Il Borghetto di San Gennaro. The house is located in a very nice and calm Place. Our apartment was very functional and the garden and the pool were amazing. Jim was very helpful in advising us about things to see in the area.
Very high quality Tuscan country apartment
Beautifully renovated apartment. A great deal of thought and attention had gone into making sure everything visitors need was available - from the welcome pack of food basics - but also things like supermarket bags, bin bags, loo roll, washing up liquid, charcoal - often absent in holiday homes. Everything was new. Lovely bathrooms. Jim was easily available and very helpful and friendly. Friendly visitors in neighbouring apartments. We had a great time. Very well situated for Lucca, Florence, Pisa, the coast and the mountains
A beautiful new addition to a great property!
We stayed at one of the other units in this property this past summer and thoroughly enjoyed our experience - pool/privacy/amenities/etc. This new unit is equally charming. Everything feels so classically Tuscan, while still being totally new and comfortable. Good beds, linens, towels, etc. Kitchen supplied with all the necessities to cook your favorite pasta in the evening when you don't feel like going out. We were even able to entertain some friends staying nearby because the table seats eight. Jim was not only a great host, but also a knowledgable concierge. He responded quickly to our requests and was able to direct us to restaurants and sights that aren't in the tourist guides. I would highly recommend this property for a large group of friends or family because there are a number of units that can be rented together - providing together AND alone time.
You will find that il Borghetto is located in one of the most popular areas in Tuscany. Situated between Pisa and Florence in Northern Tuscany, il Borghetto is only eight miles from the historic city of Lucca,
famous for its flat, pedestrian-friendly, cobblestone streets and its magnificent thirty meter wide Renaissance wall surrounding the entire city. Taking part in the evening walk, la passagiata, on the tree-lined wall with dozens of other walkers and bikers is one of life’s little pleasures in Lucca.
Lucca is big enough to offer opera and world famous artists at its Summer Music Festival, first-rate shopping, and fine restaurants – and small enough that you can traverse by foot in twenty minutes.
You are perfectly situated for easy access from either Pisa International Airport or Florence International Airport – each just 45 minutes from your door. Less than one hour away you will find the
Ligurian Sea and the famous walks in the Cinque Terre and the beaches of Forte dei Marmi, Viareggio and Torre del Lago, the home and final resting place of Lucca’s most famous citizen, Giacomo Puccini.
The world famous Puccini Festival takes place every summer on the shores of Torre del Lago at their beautiful outdoor amphitheatre. In less than two hours, you can visit beautiful Siena, San Gimignano,
the vineyards of Chianti, and the famous Garfagnana region, home of the beautiful forested National Parks of the Apuane and Appennine mountain ranges.
