Manuel and his family came to Costa Rica in 2002 to realize a lifelong dream and today it is their pleasure and honor to be able to share it with you! They live on the property with their 2 daughters Maya-Soleil and Sara-Star, a short distance from Villa Toucan, but far enough to offer you complete privacy. Manuel always enjoys helping our guests with questions, tour bookings, activities, visits on the trails throughout the property and share our experiences about life in the jungle and Costa Rica!
Why Manuel chose Punta Uva
Punta Uva is a living paradise on earth, with a vibrant and lush rain forest that reaches the gorgeous beaches below with white sands and live corals reefs. Here we have perhaps some of the best privacy and most exuberant wildlife in the area.
What makes this Villa unique
Villa Toucan is slightly off the beaten path...and enjoys some of the most intense nature in Costa Rica with privacy, tranquility and security. Other than the caretaker / owners on site, there are no neighbors! It is the best of both worlds: close to the beaches but a complete immersion in the treasures and wildlife of the tropical primary rain forest! Oe of the only places in the Southern Caribbean where we guarantee you WILL see hundreds of Toucans ann see newly introduced Great Green Macaws.

Home Away From Home
This has been one of our favourite places to stay in Costa Rica. We stayed for only 7 days, and wish we could have stayed longer. Nothing compares to waking up to the sounds of the jungle. The view is absolutely breathtaking and often accompanied with monkeys and tucans - which is always a pleasure! You are right in the heart of the jungle with the comforts of a 5-star hotel and amazingly close to the beach. There are so many activities to do close by!
I left feeling a wonderful sense of calm. I can't wait to come back next year!!
What a pleasure meeting you and your friend! It was an honor to share with you our little slice of paradise! Looking forward to seeing you again next year ;)
jungle living at it's finest!
Staying at the toucan was the most beautiful experience while being in costa rica! accommodation was comfortable, peaceful and private. I had everything i could ask for and more! i felt so connected to everything being that it was an outdoor shower and outdoor kitchen. It was all so serene, filled with life and i could see the ocean from the balcony area. It was sooo spacious and practicing yoga on the porch as the the sun rose was such a wonderful feeling. i will never forgot this place and hope to come back one day.
The toucan says you can!
This beautiful Costa Rican getaway is the perfect place to go on any sort of vacation wether it be with the family or with your significant other. The layout of the house is very spacious and very outdoorsy so you always have an amazing view of the jungle just feet from your deck. We stayed for 5 days and every day saw toucans and monkeys flying and swinging through the forest (the monkeys are loud but are really cool)! For daytime activities the beach is a walking distance away so you can surf or just spend time in the water. The owners were very friendly and welcoming so you feel like you're at a second home. All around my only complaint is that we couldn't stay longer!
What a pleasure it was to meet you , your brother and Jane! We really hope to see you again soon. Maya has been asking me - when are you coming back ;)
Perfect vacation in the jungle!
We spent 2 wonderful weeks at Villa Toucan, March/April 2016. It was everything we had hoped it would be! Right in the jungle, yet close to the beaches. The view from the deck is breathtaking, with so many birds visiting daily. We had hoped to see a toucan when visiting Costa Rica - well, we saw dozens at Villa Toucan! Keel-billed, chestnut manibled and aracaris. Great Green Macaws we also a thrill to see in the wild! This is THE place to see birds in Costa Rica, no guide required - they come right to the house!
The house itself was perfect for us, and had everything we needed. We loved the outdoor kitchen looking out onto the deck/jungle/Caribbean. The bathrooms are fantastic.. having no wall at the back and facing the jungle, you can watch hummingbirds and red frogs while in the bathroom! We were visited by many very cool bugs, including an awesome hooded mantis that "adopted" us and stayed with us (it's choice) for most of our stay.
Manuel (the property owner) lives nearby and was very helpful. Johanna at Casas del Caribe was wonderful, and arranged our private transport from San Jose, our car rental (recommend renting a 4X4), and ziplining tour as well!
We have compiled a list of birds that we saw right at Villa Toucan:
Great Green Macaw
Black and white Owl
Great Tinamou (not seen but heard daily)
There were more that we saw but were not able to identify. We saw many other bird species nearby as well - this list is JUST at the house. We enjoyed seeing many types of lizards, geckos, frogs, monkeys and very cool bugs and butterflies.
Thanks Manuel for a great stay at Villa Toucan! We will be back for sure!

Joanne and Family!
It was a pleasure meeting all of you and sharing our unique little slice of paradise with you. I woke up at sunrise this past Sunday at 5 am and thought of you as I experienced another amazing "jungle arousal" as each category of bird and animal began to awaken and come out and make quite a show. They were all over the place including 20+ toucans in the tree enxt to the deck and 14 Macaws flying over.
I hope you will be able to make it back down. And many many thanks for the great and detailed bird list!
Loved this haven in the jungle. Very safe beautiful property away from it all. Need 4 wheel vehicle for sure to get up this drive way.Very clean, beautifully maintained including numerous trails.Everything you need is here in the nicely stocked kitchen.Beds with ample clean linens.A stay at this property is unforgettable living in the jungle at its best.We hope to return someday to Villa Toucan.
Super glad you enjoyed it! Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversary!
Surrounded by Rainforest
Just wrapped up a week's stay at Villa Toucan, where should I begin? Tucked away up a steep rainforest mountainside with a spectacular view of the canopy and the nearby Caribbean, Villa Toucan puts you right in the middle of the flora and fauna one comes to Costa Rica to experience. Yet this location is only minutes from pristine beaches and numerous great restaurants.
No need to take a 'tour' to see Toucans, monkeys, Great Green Macaws, butterflies, hummingbirds and numerous other creatures, they're your neighbors. Away from city noise, one can clearly hear the symphony of sounds in the rainforest jungle. Away from city lights, one can clearly see the wondrous starfilled night skies or the beauty of a passing thunderstorm in the jet black night sky.
The villa is wide open to nature, including the bathrooms with their large rainfall showers. Though the comfortable bedrooms can be easily shuttered/screened, we never found it necessary. The central deck provides an expansive view of canopy action throughout the day. The open kichen is well stocked and convenient but a larger refrigerator would ease the shortage of space for cold drinks and perishable food.
Surprisingly, during our visit, a multitude of insects were ever present but rarely annoying. Live and let live seemed the best approach for our visit to their rainforest and the insects generally ignored us even during night lighting.
The owners and management team were ever helpful from initial inquiry and throughout our stay. All in all, a great experience at Villa Toucan we hope to repeat.
Tom and Pete /August, 2014
It was a sincere pleasure meeting you both and spending time sharing our little slice of paradise! Every stay is slightly different in terms of weather, insects, natural visitors, available fruits - even the presence of the homeowner (thats us!). I knew your stay would go well when it kicked off with immediate visits by the rare spider monkeys while observing the white Northern Ghost bat in the bathrooms!
The fridge is somewhat small indeed.... but we do have extra space in our main house with a huge freezer if needed.
We look forward to seeing you again next year!
Punta Uva, where the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge starts. The coast is composed of two bays, separated by Punta Uva point. You will find to the south the district of Arrecife, and to the north a large bay surrounded by jungle vegetation. This is one of the best spots within the region for snorkeling. Don't miss the river kayaking. A small road of about 6 km "Paraíso road", leaves from Punta Uva and crosses the hills to join the road leading to Bribri at the border with Panama.
