About Manuel

Manuel and his family came to Costa Rica in 2002 to realize a lifelong dream and today it is their pleasure and honor to be able to share it with you! They live on the property with their 2 daughters Maya-Soleil and Sara-Star, a short distance from Villa Toucan, but far enough to offer you complete privacy.

Manuel always enjoys helping our guests with questions, tour bookings, activities, visits on the trails throughout the property and share our experiences about life in the jungle and Costa Rica!

Why Manuel chose Punta Uva

Punta Uva is a living paradise on earth, with a vibrant and lush rain forest that reaches the gorgeous beaches below with white sands and live corals reefs. Here we have perhaps some of the best privacy and most exuberant wildlife in the area.

What makes this villa unique

Villa Toucan is slightly off the beaten path...and enjoys some of the most intense nature in Costa Rica with privacy, tranquility and security. Other than the caretaker / owners on site, there are no neighbors! It is the best of both worlds: close to the beaches but a complete immersion in the treasures and wildlife of the tropical primary rain forest! Oe of the only places in the Southern Caribbean where we guarantee you WILL see hundreds of Toucans ann see newly introduced Great Green Macaws.

jungle living at it's finest!

Staying at the toucan was the most beautiful experience while being in costa rica! accommodation was comfortable, peaceful and private. I had everything i could ask for and more! i felt so connected to everything being that it was an outdoor shower and outdoor kitchen. It was all so serene, filled with life and i could see the ocean from the balcony area. It was sooo spacious and practicing yoga on the porch as the the sun rose was such a wonderful feeling. i will never forgot this place and hope to come back one day.

Home Away From Home

  • 5 of 5

This has been one of our favourite places to stay in Costa Rica. We stayed for only 7 days, and wish we could have stayed longer. Nothing compares to waking up to the sounds of the jungle. The view is absolutely breathtaking and often accompanied with monkeys and tucans - which is always a pleasure! You are right in the heart of the jungle with the comforts of a 5-star hotel and amazingly close to the beach. There are so many activities to do close by!

I left feeling a wonderful sense of calm. I can't wait to come back next year!!

The toucan says you can!

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful Costa Rican getaway is the perfect place to go on any sort of vacation wether it be with the family or with your significant other. The layout of the house is very spacious and very outdoorsy so you always have an amazing view of the jungle just feet from your deck. We stayed for 5 days and every day saw toucans and monkeys flying and swinging through the forest (the monkeys are loud but are really cool)! For daytime activities the beach is a walking distance away so you can surf or just spend time in the water. The owners were very friendly and welcoming so you feel like you're at a second home. All around my only complaint is that we couldn't stay longer!

Perfect vacation in the jungle!

  • 5 of 5

We spent 2 wonderful weeks at Villa Toucan, March/April 2016. It was everything we had hoped it would be! Right in the jungle, yet close to the beaches. The view from the deck is breathtaking, with so many birds visiting daily. We had hoped to see a toucan when visiting Costa Rica - well, we saw dozens at Villa Toucan! Keel-billed, chestnut manibled and aracaris. Great Green Macaws we also a thrill to see in the wild! This is THE place to see birds in Costa Rica, no guide required - they come right to the house!

The house itself was perfect for us, and had everything we needed. We loved the outdoor kitchen looking out onto the deck/jungle/Caribbean. The bathrooms are fantastic.. having no wall at the back and facing the jungle, you can watch hummingbirds and red frogs while in the bathroom! We were visited by many very cool bugs, including an awesome hooded mantis that "adopted" us and stayed with us (it's choice) for most of our stay.

Manuel (the property owner) lives nearby and was very helpful. Johanna at Casas del Caribe was wonderful, and arranged our private transport from San Jose, our car rental (recommend renting a 4X4), and ziplining tour as well!

We have compiled a list of birds that we saw right at Villa Toucan:

Gray-headed Chachalaca

Crested Guan

Semiplumbeous hawk

Common Blackhawk

Laughing falcon

Short-billed pigeon

Great Green Macaw

Brown-hooded parrot

Blue-headed parrot

Red-lored parrot

Mealy parrot

Black and white Owl

Short-tailed Nighthawk

Great Potoo

Long-billed hermit

Violet-crowned Woodnymph

Slaty-tailed Trogan

Collared Aracari

Keel-billed Toucan

Chestnut-manibled Toucan

Black-cheeked Woodpecker

Pale-billed Woodpecker

Plain-brown Woodcreeper

Great Kiskadee

Masked Tityra

Red-capped Manakin

Clay-coloured Thrush

Passerini's Tanager

Golden-hooded Tanager

Black-headed Saltator

Variable Seedeater

Summer Tanager

Rose-breasted Grosbeak

Baltimore Oriole

Scarlet-rumped Cacique

Montezuma Oropendola

Great Tinamou (not seen but heard daily)

There were more that we saw but were not able to identify. We saw many other bird species nearby as well - this list is JUST at the house. We enjoyed seeing many types of lizards, geckos, frogs, monkeys and very cool bugs and butterflies.

Thanks Manuel for a great stay at Villa Toucan! We will be back for sure!

Owner's Response: Joanne and Family! It was a pleasure meeting all of you and sharing our unique little slice of paradise with you. I woke up at sunrise this past Sunday at 5 am and thought of you as I experienced another amazing "jungle arousal" as each category of bird and animal began to awaken and come out and make quite a show. They were all over the place including 20+ toucans in the tree enxt to the deck and 14 Macaws flying over. I hope you will be able to make it back down. And many many thanks for the great and detailed bird list! - Manuel

What a way to meet Costa Rica

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I arrived just before dusk after a day of traveling, and met Manuel. I had seen Villa Toucan online when I first started researching Costa Rica options, and then promptly lost the listing (I couldn't remember which zone it was in, but knew we wanted to stay there!). I finally found it after looking through just about every listing online, and was glad I did. We loved it. It was a long drive from the airport in San Jose, but it gave us the opportunity to see so much of the jungle and countryside. And once we got past Limon (which isn't a destination point for tourists!) the ocean views and little towns were great. Driving up to the Villa requires a good vehicle -- 4-wheel drive -- and we knew this, so were prepared. I love roller coasters, to the driveway was actually a blast! The villa itself was just what we'd envisioned from the photos online. It was our first stop on our first trip to Costa Rica, so we couldn't have found a better way to experience the jungle. The howler monkeys came to visit each day as did the rare white bat. I had a scorpion in my bathroom one night, and the little poison dart frog was a frequent visitor in the bathroom, too. It felt like real jungle living and I wouldn't trade those three nights for anything. The birds, the monkeys, the vegetation and beautiful landscaping, all with that little peek of the Caribbean in the distance made this place amazing. Manuel recommended we try the restaurant "next door" (to the foot of the driveway) and it was fantastic (El Refugio). The owner there went out of his way to make us feel very welcomed. The food was delicious. All in all, Villa Toucan was a fantastic way to experience Costa Rica and I hope we can get back there some day. Thanks Manuel!

Punta Uva, where the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge starts. The coast is composed of two bays, separated by Punta Uva point. You will find to the south the district of Arrecife, and to the north a large bay surrounded by jungle vegetation. This is one of the best spots within the region for snorkeling. Don't miss the river kayaking. A small road of about 6 km "Paraíso road", leaves from Punta Uva and crosses the hills to join the road leading to Bribri at the border with Panama.
