The Atrium -- a modern, light filled sanctuary. We bought it just a couple of years ago after falling in love with it's location, exquisite design and the merging of interior and exterior spaces. There are vines and trees inside the house! A fifteen minute flat walk to El Jardin takes you past our fabulously picturesque immediate neighbors --- the creek , the hacienda, the historic church, the old stone amphitheater and granaries. Right across the creek from us is La Fabrica Aurura, an old textile mill recently converted to galleries, shops and restaurants. It is rated 4th on Trip Advisor's list of San Miguel's attractions and is a very fun place to visit. Walk four blocks in the other direction and you'll be in the bustling central market, with it's colorful wares, flowers and food.
When you enter the front door of the Atrium, make sure not to boink your head on one of the oranges dangling from the tree. (I was totally sold the minute I saw that!) Soaring 30" tall glass ceilings and banks of glass doors drench the house in sunlight. Every room and bathroom has heaters (or a fireplace) to allow for warmth on some of the chilliest days of winter. We have furnished it with everything we could think of to make you comfortable.
The downstairs has a giant sala --- a living area with two seating areas and two dining tables (one set of each is in the adjoining solarium). There is also a tv room/office with wifi, cable and a printer and a very comfy couch and modern bathroom The kitchen features an extra wide counter with four mesquite bar stools, a dishwasher, full-size frig and gas stove, all purchased in 2016. And perhaps most importantly, there is a whole-house water purifier.
Walk through one of the solarium's three giant, pivoting glass doors and you'll be in the walled garden, with it's plunge pool (more for looks than swimming) , concrete couch and rocking chairs.
Upstairs are two light-filled bedrooms, one with a king bed and the other with two fulls. There is loads of storage -- you'll never fill it all. Each bedroom has it's own beautifully appointed, very modern bathroom.
A third story leads out to the two rooftop terraces. Choose the one you want depending on where the sun is shining. One terrace overlooks the garden and amphitheater and is furnished with Crate and Barrel couches and chairs and a giant, swiveling umbrella. The other has two lounges for sunbathing or napping. This is also where the laundry room is located, with a full-sized washer and dryer and a folding table.
One of the nicest features of all is our neighbors. We are a tight knit little community. Honorable mention goes to the three men who alternate staffing the security casita. There is always someone watching out for you and possibly also eager to help you bring in your groceries or luggage. A small tip is appreciated -- about 20 or 50 pesos, depending on what they do.
Go out the front door and you'll be facing the tiny park with it's plum trees, waving grasses, benches and water features. Sit for a minute before you begin to explore the wonders of our neighborhood and the magic that is San Miguel de Allende.
