Private studio style in a quiet mountain setting-GREAT SKIING NEARBY!
Howdy folks! I have a really comfortable and quiet getaway for folks lookin' to head West out of Denver for a 14'er climb, hike, ski or any mountain adventure getaway. Located at almost 9000' it has the comforts of a big hotel room and extra amenities with an entire floor to yourself, located in a beautiful mountain setting in spectacular Clear Creek County. Get away from the I-70 madness by getting an early start on your travels, or relax while everyone else sits in traffic.
Less than an hour from downtown Denver, you will be located within 5 minutes of Historic Georgetown and the famous Loop Railroad, walking distance from Empire's Hard Rock Cafe, and on over an acre of property surrounded by quaking aspen, and towering pine trees. Come walk the short trail though the property and enjoy the trees and even the remnants of an old gold mine!
Ask Mike about local restaurants, breweries and pubs, shopping, ski rentals, river outfitters, or go to CLEARCREEKCOUNTY.ORG for great information about our mountain communities and the infinite outdoor adventure that await you. In the Summer climb our 14,000' peaks, hike the Continental Divide Trail, raft class 3-4 whitewater, take a Zip-line tour, or take a gold mine tour. Year 'round adventure is only minutes away!
In the Winter Loveland is your closest ski area, an easy 15 minute drive. Arapaho Basin, Keystone, Winter Park, Copper Mountain can be reached within 25-35 minutes. Vail, Beaver Creek, and Breckenridge are all under an hour. Of course these times can vary with weather and traffic.
For you backcountry skiers, world famous Berthoud Pass is only minutes away! Get your up to date avalanche forecasts at avalanche.state.co.us. "CAIC" is a great resource for your ski and riding safety or just ask Mike.
Your private space has a comfy queen bed, a private bathroom, a living area, eating area, private entrance, and cozy fireplace. You'll have a TV with basic cable, Netflix, DVD movies, wifi, a refrigerator, a microwave, toaster, a coffee maker and some basics utensils in case you're eating in (though it is not a full kitchen).
Some of you may already know me! I started and ran the historic Mad Creek Bed and Breakfast 25 years ago, which is still going strong today. And for over 11 years you may have visited me at Mad Mike's Outdoor Gear and Espresso shop, right in nearby Georgetown, serving anyone traveling I-70 on the way to your favorite ski, raft, hike, climb or mountain adventure. Having been a ski instructor, whitewater river guide, backcountry guide and mountain rescue EMT, I have been serving Colorado skiers and travelers since 1991. Take advantage of my 25 years of serving and hosting people from all over the world when you plan your next Rocky Mountain adventure!

My boyfriend and I stayed a couple nights here and absolutely loved it! We stayed here so we could ski and not drive up all the way back to Fort Collins each day. It was the cutest downstairs area where we stayed!! It had a lot of snow/ski antiques which was so cool to look at and made it have a really comfy, homey, rustic feel. Mike was very friendly and provided some snacks and water which was very nice, and he even left snowshoe stuff for both my boyfriend and I! He was very helpful and had a lot of books, flyers, and a binder of good places to eat and go in towns near by! 10/10 I would recommend!!
*only recommendation is to maybe get a toaster for bagels or something in the morning!
Great folks! Would love to host anytime. Good suggestion about a toaster. Thanks again!!
Wonderful cabin type property in great location
Great location for access to several ski slopes. Nice accommodations and the owner was very responsive and proactive to ensure we had everything we needed. Would definitely recommend. Neat small town but would recommend Idaho Springs for restaurants.
Great friendly folks. Would host anytime! Treated my home as they would their own. Thank you.
Cozy CO weekend getaway
Cozy snow/ski cabin getaway. Quaint and loved the little ski cabin décor details. Mike was awesome and super flexible and accommodating; allowed us to park 2 cars in his driveway and stay an extra hour for checkout. Would definitely stay again. Minor things that could be better: warmer bathroom/bathroom floor and a curtain put up on the entrance door window.
Super nice folks. Would happily host again. For other folks reading reviews...the bathroom has a dedicated heater of its own (though it was COOOOLD that weekend if not used-about 5 degrees), and the door window is not covered as the property is surrounded by acres of privacy, but I will consider that suggestion...thanks.
Everything as advertised
My son and I really enjoyed the property. Small but spacious might be a good description. There was a full sized couch and chair. A queen size bed. Nice bathroom and a very large closet. All with plenty of room in between. We brought clothing and gear to ski/snowboard and all of it fit comfortably inside withofeeling cluttered. Decorations are great. Lots of cool local swag, good books and what not to look at and entertain yourself. When we weren’t skiing my 11 year old son was cool with just hanging out,,,he never just hangs out. There is plenty of space on the property outside the rental area to hang out with a fire pit, outdoor chairs and tables etc,,,. Mike was attentive but not intrusive. He introduced himself and was happy to offer lots of advice on getting around, places to go, things to do but left you to your solitude if that is what you wanted. We enjoyed visiting with him a bit and his tips were handy. Empire is a good location if you want access to a variety of ski areas without going through Eisenhower Pass. Loveland Pass, Winter Park and Keystone are all very drivable. Empire only has a few choices for restaurants but what they have is good and Georgetown is only 3.5 Miles away with plenty of other choices. I would definitely come back. Great value overall.
Todd and his son were great guests. I would love to host them again anytime. I appreciate the amazing people I meet who are so enthusiastic about the area I call home.
Quiet and quaint in a quirky little town off the beaten path
Our host could not have been nicer, or more helpful. The studio was perfect for my husband and I, and very close to Loveland Valley ski area. The accommodations have lots of authentic CO/ Mountain Knick knacks & decor. Bed was comfortable & gas stove made it cozy. We’d stay again.
Great folks. Would love to host them anytime.
Great private retreat that is easily accessible from Denver. Even though the property was so close to Denver, it felt secluded. We spent a quiet weekend relaxing and couldn't have picked a better location. Mike is an incredible host, that we can't say enough great things about. Needless to say, we look forward to returning.
These were great folks. They even had to deal with a slight plumbing issue and were more than generous. Love Hosting folks like this.
Guanella Pass Scenic Byway 5 minutes away. 5 minute drive to historic Georgetown Mount Evans Scenic Byway (highest paved road in North America!) Berthoud Pass MORE DETAILED DIRECTIONS! Access to the house is very easy. From the center of the very small town of Empire (located on US 40 about 2 miles off I-70), go North on N. Main. This is a RIGHT turn as you are coming West from Denver right past the Hard Rock Cafe. If you pass the yellow colored Jenny's restaurant on the left you've gone too far. Once on North main, go up hill about 3/10 of a mile. The house is on your right. "North Main" turns into "North Empire" (unmarked) once you leave the town limits, so don't be confused on your GPS. Also google maps might say the house is on "Mary C Dolphin Pl." ignore this! It is 3/10 of a mile from US 40.....very easy. The driveway is on the right immediately past the BIG YELLOW SIGN THAT SAYS "slow down, kids playing". There are 2 reflectors on an aspen tree with the numbers 88. Your PARKING is on the right of the driveway next to the "Mad Mike's Parking" sign. Please don't block the garage. Your entrance is around the corner on the first floor under the deck. There is a code box on the door as I may or may not be there to greet you. I will text you the code before your arrival.

I can offer my full kitchen and more bedrooms upstairs if needed. Price determined by need. Thanks for considering my mountain house for your stay, Mad Mike.
