The Down Home Beach Cottage was completely restored/ renovated in 2008-2010. It is located in the old San Jacinto Conservation District, which is on the gulf side of Galveston's famous historic east end. This area was destroyed during the Geat Storm of 1900, and was rebuilt after the hurricane as a neighborhood of 'worker's cottages' to house those working to rebuild the city. You can still get a feeling from the scale and character of the architecture of this neighborhood what it may have been like over 100 years ago. The San Jacinto Conservation District is a neighborhood in transition. This neighborhood has a 'beach bohemian' feel that exudes a more laid back and slower paced existence- even by Galveston standards! Be prepared for quaint cottage, 'funky beachtown' meets down home Galveston!
The cottage is approximately 1,000 square feet with 2 bedrooms and one bath. During the restoration, layers of materials and additions that were installed over the years had to be literally peeled back to reveal the homes original personality. Original cypress siding, windows, interior doors, and heart pine floors were salvaged, while the kitchen and bath were given substantial updates. The goal of the remodel was to retain as much of the period style and scale as possible, in playing up the charm and coziness of the home. The kitchen is 'cook friendly' in that it is well equipped, with everything at your finger tips. The cottage has a homey, cozy feel; and is tastefully furnished with a collection of flea market, thrift store, and antique shop finds. For ultimate comfort, several new items were brought in.
The garden is planted with a mix of perennials, herbs, and tropicals. Sip your morning coffee while rocking away on the front porch. Private back patio is the ideal setting for bar-b-ques or R & R.
The Down Home Beach Cottage is perfectly located for your Galveston stay. It will easily accomodate groups of up to 4 who are wanting to experience what Island visitors affectionatly call 'The Causeway Effect' !

The house was beautiful and close to everything. Perfect location for our beach wedding. Can't wait to come back again.
My friends and I loved the charm and the convenience of this home's location. Bill was very responsive to our questions. He was a excellent host. We loved being able to walk to the beach and drive to the Strand. We did not cook but everything was there if we wanted to. We enjoyed coffee in the backyard and on the front porch when it rained. It was a lovely getaway.
I well we fell in love with this house!! At first I kind of freaked because there was only one tv and it was in the master bedroom. But my 10 yr old twins read all the books instead! It was wonderful, clean, beautiful! We will be back soon and this is the only house we will ever stay in while in Galveston!! Do your self a favor and stay here😊
I loved the closeness to the shoreline and restaurants. The house was loaded-laundry, full working kitchen, and plenty of towels. I will be back!!
Such a precious, tastefully decorated home fully stocked for a week at the beach! Clean, comfortable beds, a precious claw foot tub in the bathroom, washer and dryer, a super clean kitchen with everything you need to make yourself at home. We grilled shrimp and tuna steaks in the back yard, ate comfortably in the dining room, relaxed in the living room. Lots of books and magazines were available as well as a DVD library. Even brochures from popular sites and restaurants to visit during our trip. The grandkids loved the large flat screen TV. We enjoyed Stewart Beach, Moody Gardens, Bishop's Palace, Johnson Space Center at NASA, Sunday brunch at the Galvez Hotel, Kemah Boardwalk and Landry's with fireworks display on Friday night.
We discovered many local restaurants from Gaido's to Shrimp 'n Stuff! Thanks to Bill who quickly answered any ?s we had in a friendly and timely manner! We would love to come back for another week at the beach.
Had a wonderful time staying at the beach cottage. I went for a girls' getaway with a friend and my daughter. The cottage was perfect for us. Charming, clean, and perfect size. It was just us girls and we felt completely safe stying there. I especially loved how the entire property was fenced. Once you pull your car in and close the gate, the front is enclosed by a white picket fence and the back by a standard sized fence. We brought our two chihuahuas and they loved being able to venture out front and out back all on their own.
The bedrooms were great, LOVED the bathroom, and the kitchen as well. The back yard was completely private and we enjoyed grilling out back. We walked the dogs down to the beach, went for long bike rides along the sea wall, and spent hours at the beach (with the dogs), then spent hours playing cards in the charming dining room after the sun went down.
The owners were very easy to work with and extremely accommodating. We had a wonderful time and would definitely go back!
