The Grand Suite at Onomea
The Grand Suite is the main house and largest of three separate dwellings on our five acre, Hamakua coast refuge 6 miles north of Hilo. The Grand Suite is approximately 2200 SF of living space.... a full kitchen, breakfast area, full dining room, living room, a screened lanai, open patio, two bedrooms, full bath, half bath, and a balcony lanai off the bedrooms. The two bedrooms, both upstairs, share a covered lanai with views of the ocean. The full bathroom has hand-cut stone tile from Indonesia and a deep soaking tub/shower. The living room has nearly 20 foot high ceilings and many large windows framing well tended tropical grounds, flowering trees and, upstairs, an ocean blue horizon. Many guests spend lots of time just enjoying the house and park-like grounds. We have a broad range of colorful flowering plants and trees on the property, some very rare. The fully equipped kitchen is it's own unique space with a breakfast nook and an adjoining full dining room. The kitchen is very well stocked with cooking implements of all kinds. You can also dine on the covered patio where you'll also find the gas barbecue. The house is filled with books, art and fine antiques, CDs and DVDs. Beyond our own very private grounds, the walk down our road to Onomea Bay is one of the loveliest in all of Hawaii. The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens is a 15 to 20 minute walk from our place and hardly a car will pass as you make the walk. We're also near the What's Shakin' Smoothie shack where much more than smoothies are whipped up... light lunches, coffee.. much of it home ground on their farm.. A short drive from our place is the second most visited attraction in the state, the 440 foot Akaka Falls. There are several beaches around Hilo Bay. Honolii is the closest... five miles to south of us, Hilo Bayfront beach along the the water front next to downtown Hilo, and several others on the far side of Hilo town... we recommend Carlsmith, Richardsons or Onokahakaha beach parks. Some activities we recommend you think about during your stay, here on the east side of the Island of Hawaii...... Volcano National Park, horseback riding Waipio Valley; ziplining...several ziplines are nearby; snorkeling (lots of sea turtles)...several nearby beach parks; whale watching (in winter months); a visit to the 13,980 foot summit of Mauna Kea where 13 international telescopes are redefining our understanding of the physics and the universe (a visitor center is open daily at the 9,000 foot level); photography, hiking; bird watching; Alahanui Park - Ocean-side Warm Springs Pond; the Lyman Museum, the Tsunami Museum, the Hilo zoo, Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut farm and factory; and.... did I say Volcano National Park... it's huge and fascinating.
About our Home and my wife and I.....
Our country retreat is comprised of three separate and private dwellings on five acres. The three dwellings (the Grand Suite is the largest of them) are each entirely private from one another and each have their own private entry. The complex is harmoniously connected by covered breezeways. My wife and I live in the 'master cottage'. We are near enough to provide an extra pillow or blanket should you need one, or give touring/travel guidance, or dining suggestions.
If you need accommodations for more than 4, the Garden Suite at Onomea, also on property, is a smaller cottage rental (see HomeAway Property # 371622) The two accommodations can be rented together by special arrangement. Together, the main house and the suite sleep up to 6.
The Grand Suite at Onomea is best suited for couples, traveling friends or families up to 4. The photos show serval angles of the bedrooms but please note that there are only the two bedrooms and the one full bath upstairs; a half-bath is on the ground floor near the front door.

Together we have many stories to tell... about location scouting for film and Tv, performing in Tv and theater, photo assignments, llama farming, life in New York City, LA, Montana, growing up in the territory of Hawaii, the band, our kids. If you come and see us and care to share some stories....as we say in Hawaii... we can Talk Story together.
Randall Duryea - Reservations Manager purchased this house in 2003
This is one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in all of Hawaii. It is gorgeous here, and we'd love to share it with you. Lined with tall royal palms, Old Onomea Road is our quiet little lane where artists will sometimes quietly visit just to paint the scene. The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden is walkable from our house as are the Smoothie Stand on the Scenic Hwy and the Low Store... a little convenience store in the same family for 100 year. Come visit!
Our place is peaceful... We are on the gorgeous, tropical, and green side of the Big Island. Far more like old Hawaii than the Kona side, many people who visit this side of the island never return to dry and touristy Kona side. It's never particularly hot here and never cold, though it might get chilly enough to grab a cotton sweater or flannel shirt early in the morning. The air is soft and full of the smell of flowers. Our grounds are a park... five acres of peaceful privacy with ocean views from the bedrooms. A small fishpond burbles with a fountain just outside the front door, birds and crickets sing all day long and a chorus of nighttime frogs serenade us to sleep.
The house became our home away from home. It was one of the most relaxing vacations we have had. The eight nights at the house were wonderful. It has a kitchen that is fully stocked with anything a person could need or want. The owners Randall and Donna provided excellent hospitality. They were there when questions came up but were never intrusive. I had mentioned we planned on going boogie boarding and Donna left boogie boards out for us to use if needed. The views were spectacular! We woke up to blue skies, ocean view with beautiful trees (a living paradise). On the days that it rained we would sit in the living room and look at the beautiful water shimmering outside. The pictures in the posting are all accurate. The beds and pillows were very comfortable. We look forward to another vacation at this location. We would highly recommend renting this house for anyone's vacation.
Lush tropical gardens, well maintained grounds. My husband, friends and I had a wonderful three day experience. The house is truly a gem. It is comfortable , well appointed and offers peace and a quiet refuge. The grounds bring to mind what Hawaii was like fifty years ago. Chickens roam the garden, flowers are in bloom, the sound of birds, the abundance of trees and greenery provide a feeling of being in the. jungle. The only downside was the mosquitoes. One had to apply a liberally amount of insect repellant. This vacation rental made our stay on the Big Island a memorable one. We will definitely go back and stay and will encourage friends to stay.
We have stayed at many vacation rental homes and this time was by far the best experience. We felt at home immediately ---the house is solid and it feels like home as opposed to a seasonal rental place. The kitchen is well-stocked with cooking supplies as well as storage supplies (clear wrap, foil, bags, etc.). There was even a cooler we could use when we went on picnics. I cook a lot and so this was a very important feature. The linen is good quality and the rooms are clean without feeling sterile.
Randall is very helpful and non-intrusive, meaning when we needed advice Randall came to our rescue but was not looking over our shoulders every minute (he and his wife live on the same property). We were here six nights and enjoyed every minute. We will recommend to all our friends (at the risk that it might be booked when we want to return).
The Tropical Botanical Garden and the local surfers' beach are minutes away, both MUST-SEE attractions.
We prefer Hilo to Kona because Hilo is relaxing and low-key. Staying at this home is the cherry on top.
Great property - had the feel of a southern plantation. Very peaceful location w/ gorgeous views of private gardens and the ocean. Randall was a most gracious host. Location in Pepeekeo , just 10min north of Hilo, was very convenient for all activities in the area, both in the city and on the coast. The property was as advertised, clean and well maintained. We would definitely recommend this to friends.

This beautiful property had everything we needed for a very comfortable and relaxing holiday. Full amenities (except for a washer and dryer). House was clean and beautifully maintained and the owner was friendly, hospitable and nothing was too much trouble. The Botanic Gardens are close by as is a scenic coastal drive. Hilo is an easy 15 minute drive away. We highly recommend this property and would happily stay again.
This was a beautiful place to stay - the house is exactly as it looks - beds comfortable, everything clean and a great kitchen. Randall the host is very helpful if you need anything. We liked the proximity to Hilo - out of town, but still close enough to drive in and get a few groceries. The north and south coasts of this side of the island are very beautiful and we were very glad we didn't skip the Hilo side. And our daughter enjoyed the wifi and Neflix.

Our home is on 5 acres, 6 miles north of Hilo and is a great 'base' for touring the attractions of the Big Island...... Volcano National Park, oh, so many waterfalls!, gorgeous Waipio Valley, old Hawaii villages, the international astronomy telescopes atop Mauna Kea, helicopter tours, the famous Hilo Farmers Market, ziplining, birdwatching, hiking, fishing, snorkeling, beach parks... The Big Island is very varied! Or.... Stay right here, at home in paradise; kick back, make a few Mai Tais and play croquet in the yard beneath enormous Monkeypod trees.
