About the property

1-bedroom house at the top of the beautiful village of Menerbes in the Luberon

Name of House: 'Menerbes One'. This gem of a house is right at the top of one of Provence’s most beautiful hill-top villages - Menerbes in the Luberon natural park. It has stunning views of the Luberon mountain and the valley below. Even when you are in bed there are three views to choose from – the mountain opposite, down the valley to the sunset, and over the rooftops. Menerbes was the village that inspired Peter Mayle to write 'A Year in Provence'. Being at its highest point means peace, solitude and inspiration; while the little shops, cafes, restaurants and village life are a couple of minutes stroll down the hill. To maximize the light and views the bedroom and bathroom are on a mezzanine above the living room and kitchen. There are huge windows opening onto the view and a sun terrace where you can eat and lounge. It is finished and furnished to a very high standard, with hand-made tiles and furniture. There is free WiFi internet and even an off-street parking spot.

Location is everything: Menerbes is the heart of one of the most enchanted corners of this world – the Luberon. Everything you read about in ‘A Year in Provence’ is here - the lavender-scented landscapes; daily markets overflowing with local produce that actually tastes of something; hilltop villages rising above the sea of vineyards and sunflowers; outstanding food and wine; and the sensational quality of light that has always brought painters and poets here. In Provence, everything simply tastes, smells, and looks better than at home. And it’s all right on your doorstep.

This is a year-round destination - the Luberon in winter is as beautiful in its way as during the long summer that can stretch from May to October. High above the cares of the world, the house is perfect for a romantic couple or an artist in need of inspiration.

Things to do: Choose from an endless number of walks in the 120,000 ha Luberon Natural Park, starting from your doorstep.... Go to the daily local markets and rediscover what food used to taste like....Cycle round the famous hilltop villages: Gordes, Bonnieux, Lacoste, Roussillon, Lourmarin....Antique and bric-a-brac hunting at Isle-sur-Sorgue – France’s antiques capital.... Explore Fontaine de Vaucluse - source of the crystal-clear Sorgue river (or ride a canoe down it)....Visit the Marquis de Sade's castle at neighbouring Lacoste....Learn to paint sunflowers....Picnic in the cedar forests outside lovely Bonnieux....Drive to the top of Mont Ventoux (cycle if you're mad) and let the Alps and the Med take your breath away...Marseille, 1 hour away, is France's most exciting city, and home to the world's best bouillabaisse....Avignon, half an hour away, is a fascinating medieval city you can walk around in a day....Go wine-tasting at the local vineyards or just beyond Avignon for some great Rhone wines

About Owner

We are mainly British, we live and work in Oppede, which is 10 minutes from Menerbes where the house is situated.

Owner purchased this house in 1997

Why Owner chose Ménerbes

It was a complete ruin with a fantastic view and one tiny window. We gutted it, remodelled, made big windows and a little terrace and balcony. Now it is a wonderful spot, still with that amazing view, in one of Provence's best villages.

What makes this house unique

The view; the fact of being in a quiet location but only 2 minutes' walk to the village centre; the little terrace and off-street parking spot; sitting on the terrace watching the sun set down the valley.

Just amazing

We had a wonderful time in Menerbes. The house and the terrace are just amazing. Perfect vacation house. You have a wonderful view, your own parking spot - and bakery, shops and restaurants just a couple of minutes walk from the house. We had high expectations and they were exceeded.

Beautiful property in Provence

  • 5 of 5

Very well-equipped, charming little house with spectacular views. Centrally located for day trips to nearby attractions/towns. (Please follow owner's advice re: smallest possible rental car, and note that as described in the listing, the only bathroom is up the spiral staircase and on the same mezzanine level as the

bedroom.) We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in every possible way.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review and I am glad you enjoyed your stay. Just a note on the size of car: I do advise guests to book a smaller rental car as the house is in a single-carriage road, but it is possible to get bigger cars to the house's off-street parking spot, even a big 4x4 - it just takes a little practice!

This property is positioned at the top of the lovely village of Menerbes, with spectacular views over the valley and Luberon hills. A great place for time away from the bustle of everyday life.

The underfloor heating meant the place was always warm and the facilities were well thought out. A bottle of wine was left on the table for us when we arrived.

The owner gave us very specific directions on how to find the property and was helpful throughout our stay. The streets are very narrow, so if you have a bigger vehicle you may not manage to get it right up to the house but there is alternative parking nearby.

We had a wonderful week exploring the area and relaxing. The locals we all friendly and helpful, despite our limited French. Would definitely return.

Couldn't have wanted for more!

  • 5 of 5

We had the most delightful one week stay in this house which came after we had been hiking for several days around the Luberon. Menerbes was not only the most perfect of villages but the house itself was an ideal place from which to further explore this region of Provence. Perched high up in this hilltop village you couldn't find a more peaceful location from which to soak up the views and to raise your glass and toast your loved one as you admire the sunset each evening. There are several good restaurants all within a few minutes walk and a small but excellent grocery store as well as a bakery for that all important daily fresh bread. We had only booked a week here but by the end of our stay we really didn't want to leave. Can't recommend highly enough. Peter & Heather from Sydney, Australia.

The most quiant and beautiful vacation house!

  • 5 of 5

This is one of the most charming and picturesque houses to stay, right in the heart of Menerbes. You can see gorgeous views of the Luberon from the balcony or the large bay windows (when its too cold and rainy outside), and despite our holiday being in winter, our temporary home was so warm, cosy and comfortable.

Though we didn't get to meet the owner, Paolo, he was so helpful and provided detailed information regarding the property and for a small house, it was complete with everything you would ever need. We also had a lovely bottle of wine to start our holiday (thank you so much Paolo)!

Make sure you visit La Veranda restaurant - they are so lovely there and the food is fabulous!

We cannot recommend this house enough and we will be sure to visit again soon :-)

The perfect home for 2 in Menerbes!

  • 5 of 5

Having just spent a week exploring the region of Luberon while enjoying this marvelous house perched at the top of Menerbes, we can confirm that it is the perfect home away from home for two people. The comfort, privacy and expansive views would be difficult to duplicate along with the fine appliances, comfortable bed, high speed Internet access and private parking. Of all the villages we visited in the area, and many are incredible for sure, we found ourselves anxious to return “home” to enjoy all that this house has to offer.

Menerbes is at the very the heart of the 'Golden Triangle' of the Luberon, formed by the picture-postcard, medieval hilltop villages of Menerbes, Gordes, Bonnieux, Lourmarin, Lacoste, Oppede-le-Vieux, and Roussillon. These rise up majestically from the valley of vineyards and fruit orchards below, and everything is overlooked by the Luberon mountain itself, a beautifully preserved natural park. All the villages are 5-15 minutes away. There are daily markets at a different village very day of the week. Menerbes is an hour from Marseille and Nimes International Airports, 45 minutes from Avignon train station. Within an hour's drive are Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, Arles, St Remy, Orange, the Rhone wine trail. The French Riviera is 2 hours away, Italy and the Alps 2.5 hours.
