Overview

About the property

2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, Fireplace, River Views, Bicycles and a Canoe.

This charming house is located in historic Yankeetown across from the public boat ramp. Three bicycles and a canoe are available for your use. Bike through quaint and historic Yankeetown, or to the gulf along "Follow That Dream" Highway. The Withlacoochee (Native American for crooked river) winds peacefully by, less than 200 feet from the living room window, and is a wonderful place to explore by canoe.

The house is surrounded by cedar trees, cypress, and native palms, with a wetland area directly to the west. You'll be just a few miles from the Gulf, with easy power-boating access to Crystal River and Cedar Key. In the immediate area, on the scenic Withlacoochee, you're close to nature - explore by canoe, kayak or boat, and you may see osprey, roseate spoonbills, wood storks, egrets, herons, otters, alligators, manatees or dolphins.

You’ll love the proximity to the river, the quiet location, and the awesome nature experience. The master bedroom is large, featuring a comfy king-sized bed and a fireplace. The second bedroom is average in size and has a nice queen-sized bed. The kitchen is fully equipped with pots, pans, dishes, etc. You'll enjoy dining in, if you like to cook.

Spend the day away, and enjoy Three Sisters Springs, Rainbow Springs, Manatee Springs, Silver Springs, or Homosassa State Park. All these are within an hour drive. (Three Sisters and Rainbow Springs are less than 30 minutes.) In summer, enjoy scalloping in the shallow waters of the Gulf, between Crystal River and Homosassa. You'll be able to leave from the boat ramp directly across from the house, and you'll have plenty of covered parking for two vehicles and two boat/trailers in the long garage area under the house.

This house is ideal for couples, solo adventurers, kayakers, boaters, and small families. Please note that it's built on stilts because of its proximity to the river - therefore it is likely not a good choice for those who have difficulty with a full flight of stairs. Come stay at the Withlacoochee River House, and enjoy the nature experience!

About The Owner

We moved here five years ago, to get away from it all and be closer to the kinds of things we love. We have learned a lot about the area and are actively involved in local environmental issues. We like boating, hiking, photography, nature, wildlife, fishing, and scalloping. We're also happy to share our knowledge of the local area.

The Owner purchased this house in 2016

Why The Owner chose Yankeetown

We love the secluded, close-to-nature location.

What makes this house unique

While you stay at the house a canoe is provided for your use, along with life jackets and paddles. With enough advance notice, we might be able to arrange to pick you up from a one-way paddle, where the river meets the gulf at the boat ramp at the end of Highway 40 (also known as Follow that Dream Highway, by Elvis fans). There are also three bicycles that you can use for slow-paced touring on scenic backroads.

Beautiful place to retreat

  • 5 of 5

We loved it all - the house, the wooded/river setting, the owners and the amenities. Can’t say enough good things about the place! Everything we needed was easily accessible or already provided. The owners are very attentive and take pride in their rental home. We loved it and plan to make it an annual get away.

Get away from the hussle and bussle of touristy Florida

  • 5 of 5

This wonderfully secluded house is off the beaten path so you can kick back and relax in your own private woods. The living room has a nice view of the river and the enclosed screened in deck area allows you to see the birds up close without dealing with all the bugs (especially if there is a gentle breeze).

Even though the house is in town there are so many trees on the property that it makes it seem like you are out in the country.

The owners have nice bikes so you can explore the town and the nearby Withlacoochee Gulf Preserve too. Afterwards, stop in at Gracie's or Blackwater for a refreshment and a meal. Gracie's has a great grilled fish dinner.

There is a canoe and life jackets so you can also explore things by water.

The house was clean and everything worked as expected. A nice place to get away to.

Privacy, Peace and Quiet

  • 5 of 5

This is the perfect getaway if you are looking for some R&R. We were greeted by the owner upon arrival and given a tour of the property. The home is comfortable, well maintained and has all of the usual appliances. It is tucked up into the woods, so there are wetlands to the West and drier woodlands to the East for maximum privacy. Master bathroom has a large tub, but no shower. There is also a vanity mirror and a chair. Master bedroom suite is huge and has a seating area and private fireplace. We were there during the cooler weather, and it was nice to soak in a warm tub after playing all day on the River. The second bathroom has a shower stall and no tub. There is a canoe and some bicycles available for use. The State is working on the bike trail along Highway 40, and hopefully, it will be finished this year, so you will be able to ride your bike all the way to the Gulf which is about 6 miles. The Withlacoochee River access is right across the street so it's easy to launch your canoe, kayaks or boat. For power boaters, it's about a 30 minute ride to the Gulf during manatee season. Lots of wildlife on the River as you glide by, gators, otters, wading birds, manatees and dolphins. There is a fire pit in the front yard and a screened second floor patio to enjoy in the evenings. Fair warning, this is no-see-um territory, so make sure that you bring plenty of bug spray, but we were well equipped, so they did not bother us. This cozy spot is off the beaten trail, and there are some gas station/grocery outlets on Highway 19 for basics, but make sure that you bring in all of your food and beverages when you arrive, otherwise you will have to drive 20 minutes into Crystal River to pick up anything you may have forgotten. If you go during manatee season, the various outfitters for swimming/kayaking w/ the manatees are only 20-30 minutes away in Crystal River. We also enjoy kayaking on the magnificently crystal clear Rainbow River which is about a 30-40 minute ride due East on Highway 40 to Dunnellon. We truly enjoyed our stay and look forward to another adventure here next year.

We loved the house and the view

  • 5 of 5

We don’t regret choosing the Withlacoochee River House for our month long winter getaway. The house was clean and the bed was comfy. The view of the river was beautiful. Yankeetown is a little remote but there are plenty of places to take walks and explore. Dave and Ursula are very accommodating and respond quickly to questions or issues. It was a pleasure to meet them. We wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again.

Large comfortable house great location

  • 5 of 5

Hosts are welcoming and communicative.

The home sits opposite the river and has great views, the neighborhood is quiet and scenic with a local restaurant/ pub at one end, a village feel to it. Included in the rental are bikes and a canoe which we used and enjoyed. Just a fabulous place to get a completely different Florida experience. AAA place, book with confidence.

Rainbow River State Park is less than 30 minutes away, in Dunellon. In March the grounds are particularly beautiful with azaleas in bloom. The Rainbown River spring head is a spectacularly scenic swimming location, with fresh spring water bubbling out of the ground year round at a refreshing 72 degrees. (During summer months, early morning, before 11, is the best to avoid crowds. Three Sisters Springs is even closer, in Crystal River, and is a perfect manatee watching destination in the cooler months.

Feel free to ask us for restaurant recommendations or about any special interests. We're wild-life and river enthusiasts, and can point you in the right direction.
