About the property

5 Bedrooms, 5.5 Baths, Sleeps 16

“Wow”: That just might be your reaction as you drive up the mountain road and see Unbridled Spirit perched among towering trees. The hand-built log home is a beauty from the outside—and just as gorgeous inside, which a cathedral ceiling and luminous wood-planked floors and walls. What’s more, with 5 en-suite bedrooms, an 8-person hot tub, and a game room with a Nintendo Wii among its amenities, the house is a comfortable, restful retreat that can sleep up to 16 people. Please note, there is a minimum 2-night stay required.

Each of the 5 bedrooms—4 upstairs and the 5th on the main floor—can be considered a master suite, which makes Unbridled Spirit well suited for multiple couples or families vacationing together. Each has a king-size bed, a private bathroom with a combo shower-tub, a TV with a DVD player, and a delightful view of the surrounding woodlands. The main-level bedroom has a bonus: a whirlpool tub in its bathroom.

In addition, a sofa in the great room opens into a bed for 2, as do 2 of the couches in the upstairs game room. There’s a good chance the kids will want to sleep in the game room even if there’s an available bedroom: The airy loft space includes not only a full-size pool table but also a multi-game arcade—think of the Frogger and Galaga marathons!

The great room on the main floor is easily as spacious as the game room, with a towering ceiling and a double-height wall of windows that let you savor the view from just about any seat. And there’s seating a-plenty: 3 roomy, cushiony sofas ideal for watching a movie (Unbridled Spirit offers free HBO, Showtime, Stars and Cinemax) on the 50” flat-panel TV with DVD player while basking in the warmth of the stone-surround fireplace.

Like the great room, the dining area can accommodate a crowd. The lustrous American oak dining table easily seats up to 12 people. There’s also a smaller dining table that can accommodate 4—and makes a handy spot for checking emails or playing cards. Need more room? The kitchen island doubles as a breakfast bar and can seat 4 more. If you’re vacationing with kids, you could serve them dinner at the smaller table or the island while the adults enjoy a quieter, more leisurely meal at the dining table; we’re sure the kids won’t mind, especially since they can head upstairs to the game room when they’re finished!

The beautifully equipped kitchen might spur you to new culinary heights. As well as appliances galore—including a refrigerator/freezer with ice maker, a blender for whipping up margaritas or milkshakes, and the all-important dishwasher—it offers a wealth of gleaming granite counter space and loads of storage. You can stock up on groceries at the start of your stay, rather than make daily trips to the supermarket; this will leave you with more time to laze in the hot tub!

You can cook and dine outdoors as well. The deck is home to a gas grill and a dining table. There’s a smaller pub table too, perfect for enjoying a nightcap under the stars. And let’s not forget that 8-person hot tub: When you return from a day of skiing, hiking, or whitewater rafting, you’ll relish a restorative soak among its steamy bubbles!

You could happily while away your entire stay without leaving Unbridled Spirit. But then you’d be missing out on everything the area has to offer. The house is just 4 miles from the Greenbrier entrance of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park; in fact, Unbridled Spirit overlooks the 7-mile ridge known as Greenbrier Pinnacle. And if you’re a golfer, you’ll be delighted to know that the house is adjacent to Bent Creek Golf Course, designed by Masters and British Open winner Gary Player.

While Unbridled Spirit is just a short drive from many of the area’s attractions, keep in mind that it is on a mountain road; in winter you may need chains on your vehicle or 4-wheel drive. Regardless of the season, though, the home is a haven from the everyday—and what’s more relaxing than that!

Beautiful Place

  • 4 of 5

The cabin was overall beautiful and extremely spacious for our large group of 10. The kitchen was very well equipped for cooking large meals and the bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms were highly convenient. My group especially loved the key less entry because it meant that we all had access to the place if we decided to roam separately. The game room was another great addition, providing entertainment on several levels. The Direct TV and wifi were also a great touch. We also loved the large dining table that was able to seat 12 comfortably which was wonderful. The fireplace kept us extremely warm in the living room and the couches were comfortable.

There were a few suggestions the group brought to the forefront. these suggestions included

1. Providing a cleaning supplies closet that holds a broom, mop, extra dish washing detergent, and extra trash bags, and extra indoor or outdoor trash storage. This is especially important because the guests are required to wash the dishes before leaving. If large parties are staying for extended periods of time (More than 3 days) a substantial amount of dishes may need to be done, and there will also be a significant amount of trash accumulated. The outside trash bins are small and were filled quickly causing us to have to leave trash bags in the kitchen (per instruction) for the last 2 days of our stay. With the cost of the rental , cleaning essentials should be provided without limit.

2. Double checking bed sheets. One of my guests said there were a couple stains on her sheets, but she just removed them.

3. Check thermostat settings for the upstairs rooms. We were told not to change the heat settings and we made sure to abide by that rule. The issue was, when the upstairs doors were closed the rooms became cold at night. It was not cold enough to cause a major issue but there were complaints from each upstairs bedroom. To remedy this we just made sure to keep the doors open in the day time, so come bed time the rooms were warm at the beginning of the night.

4. Please purchase oven mits for the kitchen. There were none during our stay and we were forced to use hand towels.

Over all we enjoyed our stay with minimum disturbances. We would def. stay again!

Worn out and not taken care of!

  • 1 of 5

First we were unable to get into the house. We had to try several codes and it took 45 minutes or more to get in. The kitchen is not properly stocked. It is a joke. The upstairs bedrooms and bathrooms were freezing. The bathtubs upstairs did not hold water for a bath. The amount of towels provided was ridiculous, you need to wash towels daily if everyone is to shower daily. And the hot water was limited. We were there over Christmas and the tree they had up looked like someone pulled it out of a box and hung plastic bulbs on the top of the tree and one strand of lights worked. Pathetic. The house is for 16 adults and they have 2 garbage cans outside. Which means you either have to find a place to take garbage to a dump or leave it in the laundry room because of the bears you can't put garbage outside without it being locked in a can. We had to live with our garbage inside all week. Disgusting! The upstairs TV were we had the kids didn't play movies. The house has so much potential but the neglect and poor care was disappointing. I could go on and on about the little details that make this house not worth the money. We spent way too much money for 5 days. We will be doing a charge back for the cost if we don't hear back from them. We filed a claim and still have not heard from them. Don't stay here. We gather as a family and rent large homes regularly, there are far better options. Keep looking.

Owner's Response: Mary, thank you for taking the time to review Unbridled Spirit. Your input, and all our guest feed back are vitally important to us as we want all guests expectations to be met upon arrival. We apologize that there were issues with the code for your keyless entry. We take great stride to insure this doesn’t happen but, unfortunately computer programming sometimes fails. We do see that on December 27th you took advantage of our 24/7 on call service department that promptly provide a new DVD player for the upstairs TV. The service department, would also have been happy to pick up your trash upon request and they could have easily been able to fix the upstairs bathtub so it could hold water for you. The service department would also have checked the hot water to make sure it was all heating properly. We love to make sure all of our guests needs are met. We can only do this when we know of any issues. We hope on your next stay to the Smokies you will choose to stay with us again giving us another chance to exceed all our expectations.

The property was great, just as described... plenty of room for our family in the kitchen!

  • 4 of 5

The house was beautiful, I was a little disappointed in the lack of dishes in the kitchen.... for a house that is meant to accommodate 16 people, we never had enough forks! And trying to cook for a big family with the little dishes that were provided became a challenge for us.

Beautiful cabin and perfect for what we needed with our group

  • 4 of 5

Cabin could have used a deep cleaning but we enjoyed our stay so much. The kitchen was well stocked with stuff that we needed for cooking. There’s dust and grime on the light fixtures in the kitchen and dining room and the outside windows have a lot of Spider web and grime built up, but we had a great experience and plan to make this a yearly tradition.

Satisfied the needs of 10 family members.

  • 4 of 5

Property was clean, but had some spider webs that should've been addressed inside and outside. Pillows are rocks, so bring your own. Kitchen and dining worked well for large group. Walls are thin, so one TV on loud is heard through the entire home.

Reunion of Old Friends

  • 4 of 5

We had the pleasure to stay in this cabin from Friday until Tuesday. The positives of the cabin was the space. We planned a reunion of several couples. We enjoyed the fact that we could "escape" when we wanted to. It was nice that each couple had their own bedroom, which also had their own bathroom. The negative was that the bathrooms in the four upstairs bathrooms were very small and there was no place to set your toiletries (i.e. make-up, toothbrush and toothpaste, etc.) while getting ready. The kitchen was fabulous and there was plenty of room for "too many" cooks to be in the kitchen. We were all able to help prepare meals without feeling like we were cramped together in the kitchen. The table was wonderful and it was nice that we could all sit together for our meals. Some of the men complained the television was too small, but I didn't go on vacation in the beautiful smokey mountains to watch television. The only other disappointment was that there was no real view from our deck. While driving around, we could see that many of the cabins adjacent to ours had a magnificent view of the mountains. The drive up the mountain is not for the faint-hearted as it is very steep and very winding. We had no issue getting up the hill as we went out and enjoyed the other attractions in the area during the day. Overall I think we all enjoyed our stay and would recommend the cabin to others.
