About Marianne Barton
Bob and I are semi- retired "green" investment bankers. We work from home and enjoy spending a lot of time gardening, hiking, traveling, and reading. We delight in our three small dogs, family, and many friends (both the old ones and the new ones we make through our travel and our hospitality hosting).
Marianne Barton purchased this House in 2014
Why Marianne Barton chose Waitsfield
After decades of living in southern Vermont, Bob and I decided to move to the heart of the Mad River Valley because it's profound beauty and access to nature made our hearts sing. We went to see at least 60 houses before finding this one and knew this was the one as soon as we stopped at the end of the driveway (you'll understand why when you get here). After moving here I learned my parents' favorite place in all of Vermont was within a mile of here, so perhaps they "chose" it for me without my knowing it.
What makes this House unique
You can see four of Vermont's highest peaks from the sweeping 180-degree of the Mad River Valley. In fact, many Vermont veterans say ours is the most beautiful view they have ever seen. Where there aren't mountains there are gorgeous rock outcroppings, beautiful gardens, gentle forests, and magnificent stars (the Milky Way shines its magic on all clear nights and sometimes the northern lights bewitch the sky). We designed the retreat to embrace this view -- including using an abundance of windows and clear walls on the large deck -- and the very essence of nature -- our use of natural wood, fire, and stone elements will delight you. The effect is simultaneously peaceful and uplifting.

You want to stay here.
Marianne and Bob are wonderful hosts. The property shows the love and care they have for the cabin and their guests. The views are beautiful. The cabin so nice, you won't want to leave.
Absolutely perfect getaway to a breath-taking hideaway in the mountains. My soul feels nourished.
Graduation get away
The owners of this beautiful retreat, Marianne and Bob, have outdone themselves. The home is charming, clean and very relaxing. It has been outfitted with updated amenities and the attention to detail was amazing. Marianne is available at a moments notice to answer any questions and has an endless supply of ideas for things to do in the area. Of course, homemade cookies, wine, coffee, specialty cheese and many other little goodies just make this get a way that much more special.
Everything and more
Our 2 night stay was too short but we really enjoyed this retreat and made the most of every minute here. The views are amazing and we loved sitting out on the deck to relax and take in the mountain air. All the amenities you could think of were provided, well organized with detailed instructions. We appreciated the welcome note, cookies and a bottle of wine. We can't wait to plan our next trip to this wonderful part of VT and stay here again.
Thank you for everything.
Magical Stay at Above the Clouds
We were visiting the area to look at colleges and get some spring skiing in. Rather than just stay in a basic hotel or condo, we are always looking for a unique experience and staying at Above the Clouds was definitely that. From the second I contacted Marianne about her beautiful cabin, she got back to me within minutes providing detailed information about her place, getting there and fun restaurants and places to explore in the area. We arrived on a late snowy Friday night. While the roads were a bit treacherous, we were able to navigate them with her detailed instructions. She even offered to drive down the mountain to get us if we had any trouble. Once we got there, we were greeted by Marianne and Bob and treated with a wonderful bottle of wine, local cheese and crackers and chocolates. The cabin was immaculate and appointed with everything you might need to enjoy a relaxing and cozy stay in the mountains. When we woke up, we had an amazing view of the local mountains and ski hills and enjoyed the fresh local coffee and organic milk Marianne left for us. On our last day, we were treated with a warm batch of the best chocolate chip cookies we'd every had. Our stay at Above the Clouds was truly magical and we can't wait to return during the summertime.
An amazing view from an immaculate home!
