I begged my husband buy a fishing lodge for years. I went & found this beautiful log lodge on my own (well, with the help of my sisters). It didn't take too much to convince my husband, Tony Hedley, MD, a die-hard fly fisherman, to buy the log cabin/lodge after showing him pictures. Growing up in Alaska is the greatest childhood you could give your kids. Born & raised in Alaska, & having a dad who was a pioneer in the high end resort fishing lodges of Alaska-even thought it was a ton of work, you miss the lodge atmosphere when its gone. Though my husband & I own the properties on the river, my sisters & I have opened up a new high end fishing lodge that sits on one of the greatest fishing holes on the Kenai River. The remodel took twice as long, twice the cost of our plans, but it now stands alone as one of the highest end fishing lodges in all of the Kenai Peninsula. Our dad's lodge in Bristol Bay was "Mike Cusack's King Salmon Lodge." We decided to continue on with that Alaskan family tradition & name it after our dad, but brought it into our new location on the Kenai Peninsula, "Cusack's on the Kenai." Kelly Cusack Millen, my oldest sister, helped on the promotional side starting up, Kim Cusack Tolan, 2nd oldest sister (2 brothers in the line up but don't do much at the lodge), helps more with hosteling&gardening. Brooke Cusack, is the cook when she's up & truly the hostess with the mostess, or possibly a tie with Kim for the top live entertainment at night, did I sat we were crazy Alaskans yet? Katelyn Cusack is the Cleaning Lady(NOT), but is the only other normal one like myself in the family. Katelyn has mastered testing out our beds for comfort & she will let you know which one is the best next year. We are still working on making my loves work hard at the lodge- Alexis, Jackson & Olivia....Shane Scott is our full time on-site property manager. For now, we have newly named our Wedding Venue, Michael's Garden, after the passing of our father in July of 2019.
Why Shane Scott chose Sterling
MOST BEAUTIFUL cabin I could find on the river with platform docks on a flat but slightly sloped bank (vs the typical bank drop off with stairs to climb down). I envisioned sitting by the campfire staring out at the river (of course, with a Budweiser in your hand). I will say this..... I was not aware, when i purchased this place, of the INSANE FISHING HOLE this lodge has from the natural curve of the river bank on our river front. The previous owners never disclosed this secret. The proof is in the catching.
What makes this Lodge unique
SAFETY- I would have to say was the most unique benefit to buying this property.....The bearly sloped land as you head down to the river bank was probably my deciding factor in buying this property. The Kenai River typically has a drop off and stairs are needed to access the river's edge. We can view the water directly from the windows inside the lodge. This is an added safety aspect that meant a lot to me as we have a very large family and many CHILDREN around. To be able to see if a child walks down towards the bank without a life vest is important. OR....to view the DRUNK FISHERMEN is very important as well....Water safety is very important! Living on the river with children and drinkers- your visual view of the water's edge is a bonus. This place is perfect for the clientele we aim for.....family and people wanting to relax and have a good time! We aim for sobriety too so if you are sober, we love and encourage that healthier lifestyle for sure! FUN, NOT YOUR BORING TYPICAL FISHING LODGE-The Kenai River is surrounded by lots of fun things to do. You wont be bored like the remote fishing lodges of many places in the world because we have many local business, grocery stores, restaurants, bars, salons, TOOTHLESS strip bars, and many more exciting Alaskan adventures. We also just started really pushing the property as a wedding venue as we realized its got to be one of the most beautiful wedding venues in the state. We are proud to call our wedding venue Michael's Garden after our late dad who passed away in 2019 and brought us to Alaska in the late 60s. For his love for the last frontier, we have dedicated a perennial garden in his honor on the 3 acres and can't wait to see it take off!
