Great view needs a couple improvements to make it a 5 star

  • 3 of 5

We asked the host, David, if we could possibly check in early. He agreed to let us come at 3:00 PM (an hour earlier) which we thought was great until we got there a little after 3:00 and he is still cleaning the house. It wasn’t until after 5:00 PM until he was finally done cleaning it himself. It was a bit uncomfortable unpacking our stuff having him still there. I really think he should have a professional cleaning team come in for the amount of money we paid for our long weekend. The house still had spider webs, dead bugs and dust everywhere. The upstairs fridge needs to be replaced it wasn’t keeping everything cold. He blamed it on me keeping it open too long while I put my groceries away. He also wanted to return to the house the following day to mow the lawn, use his chain saw and use the internet at the house which I thought was very unprofessional. The view is beautiful and and it’s right near a bunch of wineries, which was nice. There was plenty of room for all of us; we had 11 people.

Beautiful view and convenient location

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at Lockes Glen from July 13th-27th at times there were 14 people and we had plenty of room in this very spacious home the views are absolutely gorgeous and it is super close to everything.

We arrived at 6:15 pm and were greeted by David who’s car was parked in the garage he informed us he was still finishing laundering the sheets and towels and had to clean the master bathroom and planned on doing that as he showered?? and then would be out of our hair.. that I thought was very strange and uncomfortable. As stated by the previous reviewer it was like living in a relatives home, my husband and I did not have a closet or dresser for our clothes for 2 weeks because the huge walk-in master closet was full of David’s clothes and belongings, the master bathroom is in need of a full remodel it is old the shower is moldy and the soaking tub is broken and unusable, it felt odd staying in a room with someone else’s belongings. The house is in need of a serious cleaning tons of dust, bugs, and cobwebs. The outdoor landscaping going down to the dock is overgrown with weeds, the steps off the dock to the beach area are unusable because the weeds are so overgrown you can’t even see the steps, the dock bar was filthy and unusable until my husband and daughter’s boyfriend actually cleaned it so we could use it. David’s nephew stores his boat and jet ski on the dock so plan on him dropping in whenever he pleases, also uncomfortable although he was a nice kid. There is no air conditioning on the main living level so on 90 degree days it is way too hot! I had to contact David to put in the missing window screens so we could even open the windows, the oven did not work when we arrived on Friday but it was repaired for us by Wednesday, another inconvenience. We travel a lot and rent many homes and for the money we spent renting this home for 2 weeks it should have been pristine and well taken care of and it was far from that. The 4 star rating is for the view and amount of room in the home but unfortunately Locke’s Glen needs some TLC.

Owner's Response: Locke's Glen appreciates and values constructive criticism so many of these observations will be cared for asap. Flies and little cobwebs do appear on windowsills as this is a lake house. Cleaning staff knows this and pays attention - however, when screen doors are left open, flies do come in and over a two-week stay it will happen. The tub is not mentioned or offered in the listing so whether or not it works is not relevant. The listing will be revised so it is clear that: 1)the dock is not totally private, 100% of the time. 2)early check-ins will only be allowed if incoming guests are totally comfortable with cleaning still taking place - however it is accomplished. 3)Going forward we will offer a mid-stay cleaning service so future guests are not offended by flies or cobwebs that literally appear overnight. 4) there are two empty closets in the Upper Level - projects are in process to further strip the house of personal belongings so it doesn't feel like staying in an "old relative's home" - conversion to a more sterile look and feel is ongoing! 4)Speaking up about problems encountered over a two-week stay is already encouraged on the handout for incoming guests but will be reiterated in the listing. All an owner can do post-stay is make changes and improvements for future guests. Locke's Glen takes reviews seriously so we appreciate guest's input on how to improve!

Beautiful views of the lake, spacious home with a few kinks

  • 4 of 5

My family of eleven stayed at Locke’s Glen in late June. David was there to great us and show us around the property and overall our family had a very nice vacation despite the rainy weather. The town of Geneva is quaint and charming and we took advantage of as much as we could in the area. We especially loved Zugibe Vineyard and War Horse Brewing which are both extremely close (walkable) to the house.

Locke’s Glen itself is at the end of a very long lane so the property is quiet and lake views are spectacular. Staying there reminded me of staying at the home of an older relative—comfortable with the quirks of a lived-in home. Other than the lake views and access, the best part about the place is it’s size. We had four different family units at the house, plus my parents two small dogs (which David kindly approved ahead of time) and we always had plenty of room. There are lots of bedrooms and baths and the living spaces are large and comfortable so we could eat meals together, play cards at night, etc. We also loved using the fire pit and dock when the weather cooperated.

Like a stay at a family member’s home, however, we did encounter a few small snags. We were told upon arrival that the whirlpool tub (the only tub in the house) was leaking and could not be used. Not a huge issue, but we had two small children and it would have been very helpful to know ahead of time so we could bring a little tub. Also, the oven didn’t work and we had already bought all of our groceries and planned meals when we discovered it. The kayaks didn’t have plugs (or were tucked away somewhere). Again, quirks of a lived in home. Also, in my estimation the whole place needed a good spring cleaning. There were dead bugs on the windowsills, thick layers of dust on the kitchen pendent lamps, and all the floors needed a good hands and knees scrubbing. (We actually went out and bought a Swiffer wet jet because my niece’s feet were black after 45 minutes of crawling around.)

Overall it was a nice visit, but for that amount of money I expected a pristine vacation home without any issues and instead we found a comfortable but lived in home that needs a few fixes and a professional cleaner.

Wonderful Weekend!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great weekend celebrating my daughter's graduation from HWS. The home is lovely and Dave was a tremendous host, always available to assist with questions or anything we needed. I wish the weather had been a little more cooperative . . . We hope that we have the opportunity to return again in the future. Thank you!!!!

Great home! Spacious and beautiful views!

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here for three nights with 14 of my friends. We had a wonderful time! David, the owner, was very accommodating and got back to us quickly. The house is absolutely beautiful! The sunsets were amazing and everyone was super comfortable. I would recommend this home to anyone who wants to enjoy Lake Seneca at its best!
