About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 3 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

'Sansei Hale' (Third Generation House) was built in 2005. It is a luxury vacation rental home overlooking the beautiful private Waikomo Stream as it meets the ocean in Turtle Cove, Poipu. It has three bedrooms (2 kings and 1 twin set) and three full bathrooms in a stunning, private setting. Both king beds are 'Select-Comfort Dual Control.' All bedrooms, living and dining have remote controlled AC units and ceiling fans throughout. The home has easy ground access to the large downstairs area that encompasses one bedroom/bath, living room, kitchen, dining area, and a spacious covered lanai with ocean and river views. Barbecue on the lanai, watch the stream roll into the Pacific Ocean, and enjoy the starry nights while falling asleep to the wonderful sounds of the stream and ocean.

The fully-equipped kitchen features granite countertops, with a center island and bar stools. The dining area, which seats six, is open to a living room featuring an entertainment center, 42' flat screen TV , DVD player, and CD sound system. Slate floors and island-style furnishings complement the setting. The grounds are lush with tropical flowers and trees and cooled by the ocean trade winds. Steps take you to the stream below and to Turtle Cove, true to its name each evening.

The second floor has an ocean viewing deck, 2 bedrooms/2 baths and a bonus room with a queen sofa bed. The cathedral-ceiling bonus room also has a wet bar with mini-refrigerator and microwave. The entire home can accommodate six people, with two king-size beds, two twins, and a sofa sleeper. The sleeping areas allow for space, comfort, and privacy for a wonderful island experience for couples and/or the entire family.

World famous Poipu Beach Park, the National Botanical Gardens and Spouting Horn are about a mile down the coast. Baby Beach is one block away. Koloa Landing, an excellent snorkeling and shore scuba diving spot, is just off the shore of the river mouth which is adjacent to the house. It is also known as Turtle Cove as turtles gather there throughout the year as their sleeping spot. Tennis, Golf (including Poipu Bay, home of the PGA Grand Slam), and excellent surfing are within minutes. Fine dining abounds, ranging from elegant to casual, garden settings to oceanfront.

We hope you come to visit our Sansei Hale and experience the local Hawaiian island escape.

About Susan or Garen McCune

Aloha from Garen and Susan McCune, owners of Sansei Hale!

Sansei Hale, is our Hawaiiana HOME where you will relax—enjoy the privacy of the stream AND the ocean, watch the fish and rare birds in the stream just below the deck, see the turtles in the cove, and soak up the genuine aloha that is truly Kauai.

Susan was born and raised on this very spot, surrounded by avocados, mangos, bananas, star fruit, pamello—all of which are still here. Susan’s playground was Baby Beach, Kukuiula Landing, Poipu Beach and Koloa Town…also all still here! Garen, the consummate adventurer, knows the island’s hiking, diving, exploring. Both of us would love to share our wealth of information to enhance your Kauai experience.

GLM Custom Homes is the McCune family business in Granite Bay, CA. A custom home builder of 30 years, Garen designed and constructed Sansei Hale on our Miyahara family property in 2005. The McCune children, Jason and Tricia, celebrated both their weddings at Sansei Hale, overlooking Waikomo Stream and Turtle Cove. Several guests to our home have also chosen our home to celebrate their own weddings and anniversaries.

“Sansei is the number 3 in Japanese, and “hale” means “home” in Hawaiian. Susan is the third generation of Hawaii’s Japanese immigrants that settled in Koloa Town…hence, with honor and love we call our home, Sansei Hale, “third generation home.” Today, a blended family of Hapas (racially mixed), we embrace our cosmopolitan/Hawaiian heritage, particularly our Kauai culture. With warm aloha, we welcome you to share our piece of paradise and call it “home” too as you enjoy the truly local experience of Sansei Hale. Once you do, we hope you will return again and again as many of our guests do!

Come share our island paradise!

Guestbook comments from the manager

Once again Frank and I want to thank you for making your lovely home in Kauai for us to rent-through your generous donation to the Knights.

We had a super time with our family celebrating the high school graduation of a very special grandaughter who"ll be at San Jose State this fall.

We all loved our time in your place. It felt like home--so comfy--so beautifully decorated and set up perfectly for our family. What great memories AND we found and loved Baby Beach!

All the best...Vi & Frank

Getaway in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Sansei Hale is charming and roomy, sitting unnassumingly in a low key residential area. Upon arrival, my husband and I were immediately taken with the vlocanic rocks on the exterior of the house and around the yard. Seemed very characteristic of a lot of local Hawaiian homes, and we were thrilled to be staying in home carrying such an authentic feeling.

The interior is expansive, easily acommodating 6 adults with plenty of room to spare. The kitchen worked out elegantly for communal cooking, with a large granite island and generous array of prep utensils and dishes lending themselves to easy, effortless cooking (and fun!). The deck has a big dining table, where dinners, lunches, and breakfasts were enjoyed as we listened to the soothing murmur of the nearby stream and wildlife.

The location worked out beautifully - right in the middle of Poipu yet unencumbered by overtly touristly resorts. Easy access to nearby Baby Beach (walking distance) and a surprisingly atmospheric and convenient shopping center with amentities and an array of fabulous restaurants (also walking distance). I usually hiked nearby trails (Maha'ulepu Heritage Trail is a must) in the mornings while my husband surfed Left Lefts. Afternoons were occupied with scenic drives to Kauai's many sights.

Owner's Response: We are truly delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Sansei Hale. Thank you for stating so eloquently the wonderful blend of local Hawaiiana and resort style surroundings. The home and neighborhood are tucked away from the main traffic, but are just a short distance to services, resort amenities, and beaches as well---a rare but welcome mix for most visitors. We are pleased that you enjoyed the kitchen and dining accommodations as they are the focus of our stays too!!! Thank you for your kind comments and sharing highlights of your visit.

Couldn't have stayed in a more comfortable home away from home

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, daughter, son-in-law, son, and daughter-in-law were pleasantly surprised with Sansei Hale. It is an immaculate home with river and ocean views, walking distance to many popular sights in Poipu, and a great semi private beach. The house is impeccably decorated, spacious, and a with a patio deck to die for. We spent great family time on that deck enjoying home-cooked barbecued meals and having breakfast out there. The three spacious bedrooms allowed for private time and the living areas were well used for family time, to read, play games, or watch TV. The garage was stocked with first rate beach equipment, including Tommy Bahama chairs and umbrellas, and snorkeling equipment. We also had use of the washer and dryer, which came in handy for towels, and washing clothes well worn on incredible hikes throughout the island. The house had everything we needed, including a great, fully equipped kitchen. All we needed was food bought at Costco on the way in from the airport and we were set for the week. Our dinners at the house were even more enjoyable than going out to dinner at incredible local restaurants. My husband and son surfed every morning and my daughter, daughter-in-law, and I took long morning walks along the scenic coastlines. It was a vacation and place never to be forgotten. We will be back to Sansei Hale soon and highly recommend a stay to friends and family, and anyone who really wants a wonderful home away from home.

Beautiful House in a Great Location!

  • 4 of 5

Sansei Hale is a beautiful house in a fantastic location. Nice layout and great AC in the rooms (once I figured out how to use it properly :) The turtles were amazing to see. We love this location for getting to the beach, shops, and restaurants. This was our 3rd visit to that area but first time on Turtle Cove. There are 2 things that would make this house rental even better. The first is the cooking utensils - we rent condos and homes because we love to cook - shopping at the Koloa Fish Market gets you the most amazing, fresh fish. The pans were pretty worn out with all the nonstick surfaces scratched up pretty badly. The knives were very dull which made cutting our pineapples difficult. There was a lack of larger glass containers/bowls to work with but other than that, the kitchen was well stocked - even has a coffee grinder. The second thing was the beach items. Every house we have rented in Hawaii has had umbrellas and chairs with various other items. While this house has lots of snorkels, fins, sand toys and beach towels, it was lacking in the most important items. There were no umbrellas and the chairs really need to be tossed out. 2 were broken and the other 4 were rusted. I suppose we could've rented them (though I didn't realize that until the last day) but we have never had to do that in the 6 trips to Hawaii we have taken. There was also no insulated bags or ice chests available except for a cracked styrofoam chest that was probably left by a previous renter. Anyhow, we dealt with these issues and had a fabulous time.

Owner's Response: We are pleased that you had a good time in spite of issues you identified. Yours is the very first rating less than five stars since we started with VRBO (2007) and we take your comments seriously. We go home to Kauai yearly specifically to repair/replace. But, I do not want to wait on issues you shared. I have just ordered a new set of non-stick cookware which will arrive in a week. Regarding the dull knives—we have 2 sharpeners in the drawers which can be used as needed. Like you, other reviews have stated that our kitchen is well-stocked so not quite sure what kind of large bowls you were missing. We do not have umbrellas, but I have instructed rental company to provide 4 new beach chairs and a cooler. We appreciate your comments as they truly help us be more observant and responsive. We are, most of all, glad that you had a nice vacation just the same. Thank you for taking time to do your review and for your positive comments on our house and location.

Beautiful House!!!!

  • 5 of 5

Sansei Hale is gorgeous!!! What a wonderful place to stay with gorgeous views!! It made our trip to be able to walk a few steps and look at all the turtles who spend their evenings right below the creek every evening!! The birds who chirp every evening and morning are so awesome to sit and listen to. It was so great to have a peaceful place to stay and still be steps away from shops and restaurants. We will be back for sure next year!!! We would highly recommend this house for your next stay in Kauai!!!! The house is decorated so beautifully and and the beds are beyond comfortable!! We seriously felt like we were at home there!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review on Sansei Hale. We are so glad that you will be returning---best testament of a wonderful time. We get many wonderful comments on our location and the home itself, but this is the first on the comfortable beds!!! We are so pleased that you noticed---they are Select Comfort Sleep Number beds (2 kings) with dual controls. We have them in our own home in the mainland and knew our guests would enjoy them in Sansei Hale. Best way to relax and end a fun-filled day in paradise. Mahalo for sharing your experiences!

We're baaack!

This is our second time staying in Sansei Hale. This time it was for a month. It was harder to leave this time, than it was after two weeks. The furniture and décor are absolutely beautiful. The furniture and bed are very comfortable and relaxing. I loved the coconut palm quilt & shams on the first floor bed so much, I ordered them when I got home, for our bed! The Waikomo stream put us to sleep every night. It is also quite a bird sanctuary. There is a fresh water turtle that lives there. (it's a Red Eared Slider, I looked it up) We watched so many whales from the upstairs lanai. One day 2 whales breached within seconds of each other. We didn't even need the binoculars. The white ocean spray from their plunge back into the waves was magnificent! The neighborhood is a great place for walking. We have been to the islands and Kauai many times. Sensei Hale is our favorite place to stay on Kauai. We recommend it to anyone coming to Kauai.

Thank you for allowing us to stay in your beautiful home again.

Aloha Don & Sharon

Owner's Response: Dear Don & Sharon, Thank you for your review on Sansei Hale...our first in 2016. We especially appreciate your comments as a RETURNING guest to our home. Thank you for noticing some of the updating touches we have done with the decor. It is fun to do, and so rewarding when it is noticed! Thank you! Your words capture the precious nature experiences that abound right around the home -- the rare fresh water turtle in the stream, our bird sanctuary, the sea turtles in Turtle Cove, and the whales! Thank you for sharing for the benefit of our future guests. It is so gratifying to know that you love staying at Sansei Hale as we do. Thank you for being returning guests and trusting that we offer a place to stay that is filled with warmest aloha. Mahalo!

We loved our stay at Sanei Hale. Your home is quite exceptional. Everything from the well stocked kitchen to peaceful lanai enhanced our stay. The surroundings are so beautiful and peaceful. The home is spacious and so comfortable. It's location is so close to everything and the ocean view is amazing. Our family loved staying here and I loved having room for my two teenagers. We would highly recommend your property to anyone staying on Kauai. Thank you again!
