About Taunya at Leaning Palm Resort near Gales Point, Belize

In 2014 we got a crazy idea! Living in the shadow of the Colorado Rocky Mountains was fun, but we were getting cold! We noticed a significant change in our vacation choices. There was a lot more sand and salt involved. A turn of events in 2014 encouraged us to make a big life change, and in January 2015 we quit our high-tech jobs and bought a beachfront property in Belize. Since June 2015, we've been living in Belize, putting our time, talents and sweat into creating an intimate first-class resort from scratch.

Taunya at Leaning Palm Resort near Gales Point, Belize purchased this bungalow in 2015

Why Taunya at Leaning Palm Resort near Gales Point, Belize chose Belize District

We chose to live near Gales Point, a small fishing and farming village on the Southern Lagoon peninsula. This diverse area provides a unique opportunity to witness life in full-blown proportions. Gales Point is a peninsula located in the Southern Lagoon which is home to the Caribbean Manatee and several other important species of fish, birds and mammals. Life is constantly showing off for us and we have been witness to sea turtle hatching's, oceanic white tipped shark viewing, blue crab migrations and so much more! We are a 30 minute boat ride to the cayes and often take our guests to Rendezvous Caye where they get to spend the day snorkeling, sunning and frankly just admiring the scenery! A recent guest spent a good amount of time just standing in the sandy shallows while two large sting rays curiously swam around her. We have access to Ben Lohman Cave via boat in the Western Lagoon - no crowds in this cave and since there are not crowds the formations are in tact and spectacular! The village of Gales Point is rich in culture and one has an opportunity to taste authentic Creole food, hear local drummers and taste wines made right in the village! If that is not enough we see Jaguar, Puma, Cotimundi, Crocodiles, Picary and other wildlife on a regular basis - The head of the Gales Point Manatee Wildlife Sanctuary states that we have more Jaguar sightings than even Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary and Jaguar Preserve! The best part - we are off-the-beaten-path, so in most cases one has all this scenery all to oneself!

What makes this bungalow unique

The Driftwood bungalow is inspired from the unique pieces of wood that drift ashore on our beach. The furnishing are made from these pieces of wood which artisans from the local village of Gales Point have turned into interesting pieces of functional artwork.

We are committed to supporting other Belize businesses, restaurants and shops. We buy locally crafted furnishings and products as much as we can, and some of those items are for sale here at our resort. As world travelers, our love for the other animals on our planet is vast. Being a good steward is important to us. We are 100% solar powered and all water used at Leaning Palm Resort is collected from the sky (we do provide bottled water for drinking). Our clean beaches give nesting turtles an accommodating nursery. Finally, we are committed to serving and caring for you, our guests. We want you to return home with amazing memories and a rested mind and spirit!

Artisans on the Beach Create a Unique Belize Experience

  • 5 of 5

The Bungalow is full of creativity inspired by driftwood that has washed ashore on the beach of Leaning Palm Resort. The artisans from the nearby village, inspired by the owners, have created a unique bungalow with just enough amenities to make you feel comfortable but not so much that you feel like you are at a confined all inclusive resort. Comfy mattress, warm water showers, new linens and so much more. Located close to the on-site restaurant, Wild Canes, one is never far from excellent food and creative cocktails. ENJOY!

Amazing getaway in Belize - remote, peaceful and phenomenal hosts/staff!

  • 5 of 5

I just got done with my trip to Leaning Palm Resort, and I am so sad that I had to leave! This place is absolutely paradise. The bungalows are all clean, have such interesting and unique design features and have everything you need to be comfortable.

Leaning Palm is a great place for a variety of travelers. I wanted to get off the grid, relax and do a couple of excursions. This was PERFECT for me! We also had many people passing through who had multiple stops in Belize. If you're an adventurer type and want to do a lot of excursions, you can do that here! If you'd rather just chill, this definitely the place for that too. Ken and Taunya are completely willing to work with you to figure out what you want to do and when you want to do it - they helped me plan a couple of fun excursions, and I felt like I made the most of my trip!

I LOVE that this place is off the grid - they run on solar power and use rainwater for the water (don't worry, you still can have a hot shower!). I think it's awesome that they are environmentally-minded, and it was wonderful to be on a vacation that keeps that at the center.

I also love how Ken and Taunya employed people from the nearby village to help staff the resort and help with tours. It was really fun to get to know them, and I like that they are helping give back to the community that they moved to for this resort. Everyone at Leaning Palm is friendly - I had the best time chatting with people and getting to know them - it was wonderful!

There are three adorable and friendly pups on the property! If you're a dog lover, you will be in heaven like I was. If not, the pups will leave you alone!

Last but certainly not least is the FOOD. Holy wow - it was amazing! If you are coming to Leaning Palm, you 100% should get a food plan. If you're not doing full-board, at least get breakfast and dinner. Taunya and Christine are phenomenal and creative chefs. They make a variety of dishes (which was refreshing!) - some were Belize-inspired, some had Mayan inspiration, etc. I did not have one thing that I didn't like, which is impressive!

If you are considering booking this property, DO IT. Best decision I have made in a long time. I will be back!

Leaning Palm Resort is located 3 miles south of the Manatee Bar river which flows from the Southern Lagoon into the Caribbean Sea. Set on the beach you can walk for miles in either direction and have the beach all to yourself. The ocean is shallow for swimming for several yards out and the fishing lands large jacks, snapper and even jumbo shrimp when conditions are right.

At Leaning Palm Resort, you have a rare opportunity to sample the real Belize. Within a short drive or ride on our private cruise boat, you can discover cave tubing, hidden waterfalls, Belmopan markets, chocolate farming and more led by local guides. We’ll take care of the details, so you can take in all sights and sounds of Belize.

As a small, independent resort, Leaning Palm caters to just nine guests at a time. That means we can tailor our tours to your interests, provide knowledgeable guides dedicated to your small group, heap on the hospitality and frequent natural wonders that no mass tour or cruise ship can touch. Our full-immersion tours are limited to four to eight adventurous guests.
