About the property

We're brand new to hosting on this site so we'll be sure to go above and beyond for your stay. Newly renovated and decorated apartment. Bedroom with queen bed plus a Frontgate Air Bed. Can also provide a twin bed. As an Interior Designer and Antique Dealer, some of the artwork and accessories are available for purchase. Fully furnished kitchen. One half block off Hip H Street with restaurants, clubs, Atlas Theatre, art galleries and free trolley to Union Station, Amtrak and Metro. Capitol is 20-minute walk. Free on-street visitor Parking Permit available on request.

Our apartment is located in one of the trendiest parts of Washington, DC – the H Street Corridor (sometimes known as the Atlas District). The unit is a full, private spacious English Garden apartment with separate, on-street entrance. It has one bedroom with a queen-sized bed and a full-sized air bed for a total of up to four guests. For the first couple of mornings, the kitchen is stocked with breakfast ingredients if you’re inclined to prepare something such as eggs, pancake mix, cereal, etc. And we may on occasion slip in sweet rolls, bagels or banana bread. There is a restaurant (Ben's) serving breakfast a half block away and a grocery store at the corner of Third and H if you need additional food.

Features include free wi-fi, cable TV, and Amazon TV that you can log into your Amazon, Netflix or Hulu. The fully equipped kitchen includes pans, dishes, flatware, microwave, toaster oven, Keurig coffee maker, etc. and a washer and dryer.

The entire apartment is for your private use. It has a separate on-street access. You'll have your own 4 digit access code for the front door. If you need a visitor's parking permit, we will obtain one for you. It is only valid for Zone 6 which is all of Capitol Hill.

We live upstairs but will ensure your privacy as you desire. We will of course at a minimum be available by text or phone if you have any questions. We will be happy to provide any suggestions for eating, sight seeing or entertainment options.

DC’s newest transportation mode, the DC Street Car, runs on H Street from Union Station (Amtrak, Metro Red Line, Marc Trains, Sight-Seeing Buses, Bolt Buses, etc.) and the Minnesota Avenue Metro Station Orange Line with easy access to the Blue and Silver Line). The Street Car is currently free to ride. There’s also Uber, Taxis, nearby Zipcars and Capital Bike Share. All the transportation options provide easy access to Eastern Market, Barracks Row on Eighth Street SE, U.S. Capitol, Supreme Court, Library of Congress, the National Mall, Museums, Gallaudet University, etc.

While children are welcomed, the apartment is definitely not child-proofed.

Now for a few caveats. We do live upstairs so you may be aware of our presence but your unit is fully self-contained and private. We do have two small dogs and you may hear them padding around or attacking a ruthless toy or acting like the world is ending when someone rings the doorbell. But since they’re old dogs, they mostly sleep. Also, it’s definitely a city neighborhood. Plenty of nearby construction, early morning garbage trucks, late night pedestrians. No smoking.

Great Place for a short stay

This was a Wonderful place for our short stay in Washington DC. Just outside of all the congestion of the main tourist area. Park the car out front and Uber everywhere! I asked for a parking pass and this was provided by the owners and waiting on the coffee table for us when we arrived.

Thank you Carolyn and Chris for having some breakfast items in the fridge for us. That was a big bonus and very much appreciated!!! Would recommend for anyone looking for a quiet and homey place to stay. Just a short walk to restaurants, convenience store, & public transportation.

Served perfectly as a base of operations!

We have stayed in several English Basement apartments in the Capitol Hill area and have seen many creative ways of dividing up the space. This unit has a nice long and wide hallway which runs back to a generous-sized kitchen and a (bonus!) washer and dryer. The kitchen had a Keurig for coffee and there were eggs, butter and milk thoughtfully provided in the refrigerator. We ended up only being there for two nights and didnt use the kitchen, but I would bet you would find the things you needed to make simple meals. The bathroom was spacious and nice and the front sitting room with its large fireplace and conversation couch made me want to come back and actually get to enjoy the space! Even in winter! Very cozy! Also, one of the first things you will notice is that the owner apparently collects various objets d'art and these items are hung along the hallway and are used to furnish the rooms and are available for purchase. The only thing which gave us pause when we arrived was the bed. It is an unconventional arrangement with what seems to be a queen-sized mattress placed over a double boxspring/base. When I sat on the foot, I nearly slid to the floor. I am not so demanding about beds but my husband really does need a firm mattress so we wondered how we would fare. We were pleasantly surprised to find that we both slept quite well, and he said he would have no problem returning. Carolyn greeted us, and even provided us with a beautiful ripe tomato from the local farmer's market. And did I mention that she left us a bottle of wine? All in all, a place we would return to!

Lovely and comfortable unit

In addition to the pleasing decor and comfortable lodging, the host and hostess were most accommodating individuals who added special touches and were available to answer questions. Th is H Street/Atlas location was an easy walk for us on our way to Union Market, Eastern Market and Capitol Hill environs.

The property is very pleasant and comfortable. Bedroom, bath & living area all have a very welcoming feel, and a washer & dryer are available. The kitchen is roomy and well-stocked with plates, utensils, etc; Carolyn and Chris even provide some breakfast supplies (milk, eggs, pancake mix, fruit, cereal & coffee). They also have printouts of recommendations for nearby restaurants. The location is in a so-so neighborhood but convenient to many typical DC destinations: for example, a 25-minute walk or $7 uberX ride will get you to the Capitol, Library of Congress, etc. My only caveat is a small one: you can hear the footsteps of people and pets in the apartment above, so an early/light sleeper might find that distracting. (I sleep like the dead, so it didn't bother me.) Overall would recommend.
