NEWLY RENOVATED! We have just snapped this 1974 apartment into the 21st century with a complete renovation! The walls are now Venetian Plaster (amazing, you'll want to check them out-- please touch), the plumbing and lighting fixtures are all new, high-grade, and zippy. AND there are granite counters in the kitchen and baths.

The furniture is all comfortable and well-suited for each room. There's lots of details to make this a great place to stay. And did we mention this is in Puako? A wonderful local beach community. If you don't know the area already, you'll be extremely happy to find it now.

This top-floor corner-unit was chosen for its location when given first choice of any unit in the building. It was an obvious choice as the ocean and mountain views are superb! Puako is a highly desirable neighborhood that has been popular since Polynesians first came to Hawaii. Really! It is now an established beach community of about 120 homes along a low-key friendly road. People walk or run as well as ride bikes along the length of the road--about 4 flat miles long.

The 1974 Puako Condominium building has the luxury of being built in a different time, when views were straight-on to the ocean, and when the grounds had ample space around the building. There are many fruit trees and lovely old mature flowering trees. Fruit is shared when in season -- bananas, and mangoes are the most common for sharing. The building, and the residents have a great, low-key vibe. This is a place to live like a local. Sure, check out the resorts, and the island, and then come back "home" and kick back. You can also hang out by the pool, with an extra shallow Keiko pool too!

** 2 Beach Cruiser Bikes (actually 3--an extra in case something goes wrong with 1).

** TV with Netflix, Amazon Prime Streaming, and Pandora accounts, Basic Cable which includes local stations.

MASTER BEDROOM: Comfortable KING-Sized Bed, with nice 100% cotton linens and choices of pillows -- from soft and scrunchable to firmer and thicker. Strong Ceiling Fan. Ocean Breezes from the jalousie windows or the sliding door with screen door. 2 Bed-Side Lamps for reading. Walk-in Closet. AND the same killer view as the Living Room. The big lanai area is in front of the master bedroom.

2ND BEDROOM: Comfortable QUEEN-sized Bed, again, with nice linens and pillows. 2 Reading Lamps, STRONG ceiling fan, a small desk in case you need to work a bit, desk chair, and a big closet.

3RD BEDROOM: 2 Comfortable TWIN-sized Beds, again, nice linens and pillows. 1 Reading Lamp, STRONG ceiling fan, a dresser, and another big closet.

2 BATHROOMS: Both bathrooms are accessed from the hallway and both have new cabinets and granite counters, professional-grade faucets, and plenty of thick and thirsty towels. Beach towels too. Also, shampoo, conditioner, hand-soap, TP, and hair dryers.

LANAI: BIG VIEW (of course). Teak table that seats 4-6, as well as an electric Barbeque for cooking your local fish and veggies. Sunsets can be magical and yes, the Green Flash is real (though we call it the Green Blip most of the time). In season (primarily January - March) you can easily see Humpback whales cavorting off the coast from the lanai--that's kinda fun!

KITCHEN: Breakfast bar with 3 rattan stools. ALL the basics--refrigerator, stove top, oven, small dishwasher, microwave, toaster, blender, espresso machine, french press, Mr. Coffee (we're in the belt AND suspenders arena when it comes to making coffee) plates, cups, utensils, nice heavy-weight stainless pots and pans, bowls, tupperware, cloth napkins, dish soap, dish washer soap, and lots of etc.

Just in case you're worrying about walking up 4 flights of stairs -- YES -- there is an elevator.

Puako Store, a small, well-stocked grocery/liquor store is steps away -- super convenient if you do not want to cook, or forgot to bring something with you. They have excellent wine too. You'll probably want to celebrate at least a little bit.

There are about 6 sets of decent snorkel gear (though it's always better to bring your own as we cannot provide all sizes), some boogie boards, and 2 beach cruiser bikes. You can easily ride to many great beach spots or high-end resorts as Puako Beach Drive is flat and the south end is a beach trail that leads to the Fairmont Orchid and the Mauna Lani. Going North is Beach 69 (Wailea Bay), Hapuna Beach, the Hapuna Prince hotel and the Mauna Kea hotel --though the road going north is hillier.

Basically, if you're thinking about staying at a resort, because you really love resorts, by all means stay at one of the many in West Hawai`i. If you are instead looking for more of a local experience, which is definitely harder to find, then Puako is a fantastic choice. It's the place that was the first choice for beach homes in South Kohala. The weather is just about perfect and the beautiful Pacific Ocean is right there.

We have lived on Hawaii Island for almost 40 years and are pleased as punch to also be living in Puako. Jack is a retired wood-flooring contractor and I (Barbara) am most recently retired from the County of Hawaii. We own and manage this condo and we think that our pride of ownership shows.

We think this is the best unit in the building -- in the only condo (or apartment, or multiple unit) building in all of Puako. It is taller than any house in the area, hence the great views. Puako is a wonderful and relaxed beach community. We think the real question is why not this property?

What makes this condo unique

You'll have the best of all worlds here. The low-key vibe of a local beach community, yet super-close to world class resorts. A little unusual in that sense--Mauna Kea Hotel, Hapuna Prince Hotel, Fairmont Orchid Hotel, Mauna Lani Hotel. All of these are 5 star (or higher) with fabulous pools, spas, restaurants, gyms; in short -- all the trimmings.

Great Puako Location!

What a great spot! We travel to Hawaii for a conference at the Hilton Waikoloa every few years and back in 2014 we started staying away from that really touristy area and started staying in Puako instead, renting at one of the houses down the road. This time we really lucked out being able to stay at this condo which was MUCH better then where we were last time in Puako. First off, it is on the top floor, so the views are much better than they were at the prior house which was at ground level where we had no view. We saw whales flapping away in the ocean while eating breakfast on the deck there every day! I think being up higher than anything else around also helped to have great breezes here, making it a really nice temperature at night for sleeping. It's also at the end of the row from the elevator so it is quiet at night with nobody walking by to another place. And it was a bargain compared to what else was available.

Sleeping was easy, the beds were comfortable and there was plenty of room for us (three couples) to spread out in our own bedrooms. The condo was fully equipped for eating in, which we did, taking the owner's advice and making the short trip up to Kawaihai (I'm not sure I'm spelling that right) for some fresh fish. It's also right next to the only grocery in Puako which was a really handy short walk the first morning to get some breakfast things we forgot to get at Costco on our way up from Kona. The internet wifi was fast and reliable. The cable TV also had netflix. What more could you ask for

My wife and I really like the 'vibe' in Puako. It's near enough by the Hilton Waikoloa village for us to attend the conference but worlds above in terms of relaxation and serenity. There're ocean access places up and down Puako Beach Road, the closest an easy walk from the condo. It was amazing how many turtles we saw when we snorkeled there. One day there must've been 20 to 30!

We plan to be back when the conference returns in 2020. We will definitely want to return here to stay when we do!

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE!

This was my third stay at this awesome spot. It has recently been remodeled with many nice upgrades. There is now a "smart TV" with Pandora, Netflix, etc. It is perfect for groups of family and friends who have different interests : walking distance to beach access close by , as well as only a few miles (hiking or biking distance) from the 2 of the best beach parks on the island including the world famous Hapuna Beach. With all the equipment on site for beach activities, everyone can do their own thing. With 2 full baths and a well-equipped kitchen even including an espresso maker, our group of 5 was very comfortable.

Besides the view and the ocean breezes, one of the things I like most is the old Hawaii feel of the building, while still having all the modern conveniences. There are fruit trees and lush tropical vegetation surrounding it. The caretaker on site, as well as the owners are both extremely knowledgeable about the area. The General Store next door unexpectedly carries local produce and a decent wine and microbrew selection as well as the usual basic supplies. We stayed for 4 days and never had to venture out to any other store.

I much prefer this condo to other hotels and condos I've stayed in on this part of the coast over my 20 years on the Big Island.

A great place to experience the old authentic laid back Hawaii

If you want a really special experience in which you feel like a natural part of a very special little quiet beach community THIS is the place. As a former longtime Big Island resident returning for a visit, I dreaded the "tourist" Hawaii experience. Puako is a one of a few communities scattered around the island on small dead end roads or loops off the highways. The old Hawaii is alive and well in Puako. There are no big hotels; just this one simple condo building. Most of the residents go to little slips of beaches to launch their sea kayaks or outrigger canoes. It's a beautiful section of the coast that's great for snorkeling and swimming. There are 2 lovely public beaches nearby, easily accessible by bicycle. 

And bicycles are provided!! EVERYTHING is provided!! Snorkel gear, boogie boards, big thick beach towels, beach chairs . . . I’ll get back to the long list of what's provided.

There's an elevator with a daily fresh wall bouquet. The resident manager is more like a concierge, very knowledgable, a great gardener, who really has a good touch in setting the mood of the property. For example, residents are gently advised not to use horn locks on their cars to keep the noise down. There's a lovely small round pool with a little sitting pool beside it; Marco Polo and cannon balls are forbidden. In other words, this is not a place where the pool is a constant source of noise. The building and pool area are surrounded by many fragrant plumeria trees, ginger, banana trees and bromeliads, keeping it shady and hidden from the road. The units stretch the width of the building so the front floor to ceiling windows look out at the ocean, and the entrance faces the mountains. The trades keep the entire unit well ventilated, the ocean facing walls have sliding screen doors, the mountain facing bedrooms have jalosie windows. 

bigger. In the case of this place, the real apartment looked better than the photos. There's an airy spacious feel. There are 3 bedrooms in descending sizes and 2 bathrooms. Both baths have comfortable tubs and good water pressure for showers. There are loads of towels, shampoo, soap, conditioner, hairdryers — everything you need. All the bedrooms have windows.

There's a washer/dryer with the detergent provided. The kitchen has an espresso machine and a French press for coffee, a microwave, plenty of pots and pans and all the utensils needed for cooking. Besides nice dining plates there are loads of plastic glasses for the beach. There we

Great place to stay!

Jack and Barbara's Hawaii Love Shack Puako Beach Condo was very convenient and affordable. All amenities were provided to make us feel right at home. Beautiful ocean views and sweet ocean breezes added to the experience. Close to great beaches, snorkeling shopping and restaurants, we loved it! Will book again.

Fantastic well-appointed condo with ocean views, easy beach and reef access in Puako

This is a wonderful condo in Puako. It has a fantastic location on the Puako Beach Road (next to the general store) - near many beaches and snorkel spots on the reef. Just walk across the street and you are at the ocean! Quiet residential neighborhood. The apartment is on the 4th floor on the corner with amazing views to the ocean. From the lanai we saw lots of whales. The condo itself is well-laid out - open kitchen and adjacent living area are comfortable and with great views. The master bedroom also faces the ocean. Two smaller back bedrooms have either 2 twin beds or 1 full bed, and both are very comfortable. Also 2 bathrooms and in apartment washer/drier were great. The kitchen has everything you need to cook (even including a blender for your smoothies). Also included are 2 bikes, boogie boards, some snorkeling equipment, and beach chairs and umbrellas. The hosts were very responsive and wonderful to work with. I highly recommend this place. Fantastic for a family.

Many people come to the Big Island to see an active volcano, others come for our host culture which is very much alive and evident, others come for the fine weather (not too hot; not cold), and many want to enjoy the ocean A LOT. Puako is a good base for all these reasons because it is a Beach community, with 9 public access points to the coastline, the ocean is very accessible. You can live like a local and enjoy a nice beach too. You are closer to the beach here than at the big resorts, that's for sure. And you will have a feeling of neighbors and community. Puako is a special place on the Big Island, which most locals know, yet it's still low-key, calm, and quiet.

World-Class Resorts are very close (3 miles for Fairmont Orchid and Hapuna Prince and 4 miles for Mauna Lani and Mauna Kea) with their restaurants and golf and spas and tennis.

Kilauea crater, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is about 2 hours away. You can go for a day-trip from here.

• We make every effort to re-book. We really are not trying to keep your $ for no reason.
