We are Steve and Julie Kenney. We are homebuilders (need a beach home, anyone?) and have three sons. We love Dauphin Island and all there is to do, and the time we spend together, just hanging out at our Dauphin Island homes with friends. Our boys are active in Boy Scouts (our oldest, now in college is an Eagle Scout!), and we love to travel and stay in vacation homes when we do!
Julie purchased this Cottage in 2004
Why Julie chose Dauphin Island
We purchased the property this home is built on in 2004, the day before Hurricane Ivan flooded the 50 year old home that sat (flat on the ground). We loved this property because of its unique setting on the island - a large, grassy, beautiful location along Salt Creek - just a minute from the beach!

Heron and Heaven's Nest
As all the other reviewers attest, except that one that would find a problem anywhere they go, this place is the real deal. I'm back home in Chicago writing this, but my mind is still there at the Heron's Nest on Dauphin Island. Like others have said, you don't even need to leave the home to enjoy your vacation. The place and property has everything -- a pool, a big yard, a creek for fishing, pool table, ping pong table, basketball hoop, board games, satellite TV, hammock, 5 decks, a grill, bikes, fishing poles, scooters, etc. These folks have thought of everything. These amenities are great, but the home and decor are what make the experience. Tasteful, modern, and very well kept. Stop looking and book it now!
A calm, relaxing vacation home.
The house was very clean and comfortable. Suited our needs well (5 adults, 1 teen, 4 kids and 2 babies). Well stocked with kitchenware, linens, grill, bikes, kids toys, etc. Central location on island, quite a bit to do around the area, more popular cities (Mobile, Gulf Shores, Pensacola) were a reasonable drive away for our week long stay. Owner was friendly, available and promt in addressing our questions. Only con was the walk to beach wasn't really quick and easy. Had to climb over really steep dunes. Would be ok for adults but not convenient for a group with young (1-7yr) kids. However, drive to beach walkover is short. Just had to let up the cars.Would definitely recommend!
Thanks for your stay at our home, we're glad you enjoyed everything we provide. The dune walk to the beach is only one option and is definitely an "adventure" which lots of kids love. Many people walk on the bike trail to the public beach or, as suggested when traveling with equipment or kids, drive the 1/2 mile to the parking lot of either the public or Isle Dauphine beach as you mentioned. Thanks again for your stay! Julie
Great Stay on Dauphin Island!
Everything about this home is exactly as it appears in the description. My family of seven had a great time here. Nice quiet spot close to everything you would want to see or do on the island. Julie was great and easy to get a hold of when we had questions about anything. We look forward to our next visit when it's warm!
Thanksgiving get away
Wonderful get away still close to beaches but quiet
We had a great stay at Julie's. Everything was just as described and Julie was great with communication leading up to our trip and while we were there. Would definitely recommend for those planning a trip to Dauphin. Thanks!
Thanks, Luke for your review! I'm so glad your group had a wonderful time on Dauphin Island and at our home!
Pricing High for with Little to Do
My family visited Dauphin Island, for the first time for Fall Break. I am a mom of 3 kids: 10 years old, 8 years old and 3 years old. We've traveled to a lot of warm, beach, pool/resort type of destinations in the South and this location of house & area had the following pros & cons.
House Pros/Cons: House owned/managed by owner Julie Kenney is very lovely. For the most part, the indoor area was very clean and nicely decorated. This house has 3 bedrooms.
It sleeps 6 comfortably. The futons upstairs seemed quite run-down and in an area at the top of the stairs that could not be used as a bedroom. All voices carry upstairs with the tile floor. Bugs: We found a cockroach in our kitchen sink and a few other "large" bugs in the bathrooms. Scared our kids greatly, but Dad took care of them in a jiffy. The pool area is nice, my only complaint is that the pool furniture was old, worn appeared to be dirty. (in my opinion should be replaced). It took my husband 30 mins to set up the outside pool area with cushions and umbrellas. All was put away by the owner. Lots of : games, outdoor and toys, bikes for kids to enjoy! Loved that!
Area: Nothing to do. The beach that is noted 1/2 mile from the house, is truly not a "Gulf Beach". It is an inlet, that is very calm, like a lake - no waves, not much beach space to set up chairs or umbrellas. The other beaches on the island are driving distances and you need to pack walking shoes. At the public beach you have to park and walk a good 1/2 mile until you hit water. Walking along a boardwalk, then in sand with kids, beach toys, chairs and umbrellas is nearly impossible. Very disappointing. I was under the impression that this was a beach vacation, it certainly was not. We used the pool most days and stayed at the house and did more non-beach exploring on the island. Also - because of Dauphin Island's rustic nature, you have to be careful on the beaches! There are no flags or warnings visible for sea life or conditions. 1/2 way through our trip there was a jelly fish infestation on the beach and the larvae spread into beach waters. All of our kids came out with burning/itchy red bites that the doctor determined were "sea lice" from the larvae.
Unfortunately, not the vacation we had hoped for at this higher nightly rate!
Thanks, Rachelle, for your stay in our home. I will reply to some of your comments so that other guests can have additional info. Unfortunately you arrived on the heels of Hurricane Nate, which definitely impacted some of the conditions on the island (probably including the bugs, sadly, as that is common here down South when there is lots of water - we spray regularly and had a recent spray. With mutual agreement, since our house was available and ready and you did not purchase trip insurance, I refunded the first night of your stay when we both decided it would be best to wait a day so that your family wasn't traveling through bad weather. We worked hard to make sure the house was ready for you, as the storm did "make a mess" outside - but we powerwashed the under house area to make sure it was in good condition for your arrival.
The patio furniture is not brand new, and the photos on our website were taken this year. It is in good condition as shown in the photos. We do keep the cushions put away so they are out of the weather and hopefully dry, so that our guests can get them out when needed.
We're glad you enjoyed the bikes, pool toys, beach toys, etc. that we provide.
Our photos and captions on our listing are accurate, and describe the futons as follows "At the top of the stairs is a cozy sitting nook which converts to two twin beds for sleeping", and that the "window futon" is best for 1 or 2 children. The futons are not in bad condition. There are four sleeping rooms with doors (bedrooms) plus the sitting area/futons at the top of the stairs.
There is so much to do on Dauphin Island, even after a hurricane . So many guests have weeks where the weather is terrible, and never even visit the beach. They enjoy the pool and other island amenities. I send out a long list of our family favorites - the Fort, the Estuarium, the bike trail, and of course nearby Mobile with its museums, shopping, etc.
There are two beaches 1/2 mile from the house, as noted on our arrival info. The public beach by the little red school house is a gulf beach. The one at Isle Dauphine is in an inlet, but I suggested it because it was less impacted by Hurricane Nate and easier to park and get to the water quickly.
Thanks again for your stay, Rachelle, and I'm sorry your family didn't love Dauphin Island like we do. I do hate that your kids got bitten by the sea lice and hope they are feeling better. That, too, can happen at any beach town at any time
