About Margie Ashburn

We live in nearby Highlands, NC (another beautiful place) and built this cottage as a weekend getaway to enjoy the lake, golf course and great clubhouse! Our family is from Savannah, GA and moved up to the mountains to raise our family of 5 girls in 1985. We enjoy renting and house swapping all over - Mexico, California and the southeast.

Margie Ashburn purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Margie Ashburn chose Bear Lake Reserve

Bear Lake Reserve is very unique. While we are 'in the middle of nowhere' you have every amenity at your fingertips without the crowds. You can visit many places during your stay at Bear Lake - Sylva - 20 minutes; Western Carolina University - 15 minutes; Cashiers - 30 minutes; Highlands - 45 minutes; Cherokee - 40 minutes; Asheville - 1 hour. Explore the Blue Ridge and Smokey Mountains from this spot and return to a very special place.

What makes this cottage unique

This cottage is situated close to the Greeter's Cottage (entrance) and just down the road (a few minute walk) from the Mill Pond with stocked trout ponds, streams, hiking trails, large covered pavilion with a huge fireplace (wood provided), bathrooms and a nice living room with fully equipped kitchen. A great gathering place for meals or just drinks.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My family and I had a wonderful and relaxing Thanksgiving holiday on Bear Lake Reserve! What a wonderful gem that we have discovered and I know we will come back year after year. The Mill Pond House, where we stayed, was very cozy and had all the amenities of home and more! We loved sitting by the porch fireplace drinking wine, playing board games and listening to music ( wonderful Bose speaker provided) while in your home! I can't even begin to tell you how much fun we had exploring the Bear Lake grounds! We hiked, fished, kayaked and packed picnics that we enjoyed daily by one of the many outdoor fire pits along the way. I can't say enough about how much we loved this beautiful part of the world! This was definitely the most fun and relaxing Thanksgiving we have all had in a long time! Can't wait to come visit this summer and enjoy the many water activities and that POOL! Thank you for opening your vacation home to us! We will be back soon!

Amazing home!

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful rental home was the perfect place for a family vacation. It was very well equipped with everything we needed-just need to bring food/drinks. The beds were comfy, bathrooms had plenty of towels, and the kitchen had all utensils needed. The living room had lots of room to relax around the fireplace-which we used each day. The screened porch with fireplace was also a great place to relax! Too many amenities to list! It truly felt like a cozy, family home and not just a rental. Just be prepared to drive on some challenging mountain roads....we came from Florida and some roads were a bit scary for us. We would highly recommend this amazing home!

Great place to unwind!

  • 5 of 5

We rented this location for Christmas. We were very comfortable in this very clean well furnished cabin. Loved the surrounding area. Excellent screened porch with fireplace and grill. Great walks with our dog! The owner was very friendly and accessible. The access to the cabin was easy. The stepping Stones to the front door we're tricky but we had no physical limitations and there was ice. That I guess is part of the mountain experience in the winter! I would stay here again!

Nice cottage. Close to the entrance of the reserve.

This was a nice experience for our whole family. This cottage is right across from a fishing pond which was like having our own private pond. Only about 15 - 20 minute drive to pool and lake area. Would definitely return.

Charming and Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

We really loved staying at this property in Bear Lake. The location was great and very peaceful. The house was very clean, comfortable, and the kitchen was well stocked with all the dishware and cooking items you could need. It also had a beautiful screened in porch with a fireplace where we spent a lot of time relaxing and enjoying the view outside.

There was also a lovely club house that has a pool, hot tub, beach, restaurant, pool table, ping pong, table shuffle board, and access to boat, jet ski, kayak, and paddle board rentals.

I highly recommend this property! Great for a romantic getaway or time together with family or friends.
