From Aaron’s Retreat, you’ll have a spectacular view of Sierra Blanca and the lush surrounding forest. That’s just one benefit of the 3-bedroom cabin’s fabulous location, 7,000 feet above sea level. Another is its proximity to Alto Lake, Ski Apache, and numerous other local attractions.
The main floor’s living/dining area is flooded with sunlight, courtesy of picture windows and the sliding glass door that opens onto the wraparound deck. The leather couches and armchair enable everyone to kick back and gaze out at the Ponderosa pines or to watch a movie on the flat-screen TV with cable. In summer the ceiling fan and the central air-conditioning will cool you off after a day of hiking or horseback riding; in winter you’ll want to drink hot cocoa or brandy by the fireplace when you return from skiing or snowboarding. And if you’re vacationing with the kids, there’s plenty of room for them to sprawl out on the carpet with their toys and games.
The dining table seats 6 with ease—no bumping elbows or knees here. You can dine out on the deck as well; the table even has an umbrella to provide welcome shade in the summer. The best seat on the deck, though, is probably the hammock. Swaying out among the crisp breeze, admiring the majestic mountains while hummingbirds sing, just might be among the highlights of your stay.
You can cook on the deck too, on the large gas grill. If you catch any trout from Alto Lake, which is regularly stocked, here’s the place to cook it. Of course, Aaron’s Retreat has a kitchen indoors as well. Equipped with everything from a full-size refrigerator/freezer to a blender to a dishwasher, along with plenty of cookware and tableware, it’s ready for anything from a holiday dinner to a midnight snack. Just behind the kitchen is the laundry room, with a full-size washer and dryer. Not only can you pack light, but you might even return home from your vacation with freshly washed clothes for a change.
The upstairs master bedroom has its own balcony overlooking the woodlands. You and your special someone can enjoy a romantic nightcap under the stars before nestling under the covers of your king-size bed. The 2nd bedroom is upstairs too. It includes a queen-size bed, as does the main floor’s bedroom. Each bedroom has its own TV, and Aaron’s Retreat boasts free WiFi as well. Prop yourself up against the pillows and watch your favorite late-night shows, surf the web, or read before drifting off to sleep. In the morning you’re sure to wake up energized and rarin’ to go.
And there are plenty of places nearby that you’ll want to go to. In only 5 minutes you can drive to Alto Lake and Recreation Area; when you’re not fishing you can explore the surrounding trails on foot, mountain bike, or horseback. Just beyond the lake is Ruidoso Winter Park, where you can snow tube in winter and soar on a zip line year-round. The Links at Sierra Blanca golf course is only a 10-minute drive from Aaron’s Retreat. Also less than a half-hour away are the Fort Stanton-Snowy River Cave National Conservation Area, the Hubbard Museum of the American West, Ruidoso Downs, the art galleries and artisan shops of Sudderth Drive, and Grindstone Lake and Trail System, where you can fish, boat, hike, ride mountain bikes and horses, and play disc golf; you might also spy ospreys, mule deer, black bears, and elk. And in just a half-hour you can drive to Ski Apache, the southernmost continually operating ski resort in the country. (Note that because you’re in ski country, during winter you may need a 4x4 or chains on a 2-wheel-drive vehicle to access Aaron’s Retreat.)
