Musty carpets, rusty fridge, less than charming neighborhood
While there is a nice view of the bay and a good floor plan, this property is in need of an update; the kitchen and baths feel like the 1980’s. The fridge definitely needs replacing and wall to wall carpet is not a great choice in such a wet environment. The cottage is one of a small handful in an industrial area with the shipyards (some noise and music at different times of day), car lots, warehouses - not really a residential neighborhood per se. The kitchen is pretty well stocked and a nice size. The owner was easy to reach and got back to me quickly (we rented at the last minute). Next time would look for more charm and value.
We were somewhat surprised that guests viewed the kitchen as outdated, as new granite countertops, stainless steel sink & faucet & dishwasher were installed in the kitchen three years ago. The upstairs bathroom had a new granite countertop and tile flooring installed at the same time. Perhaps the rust on the exterior of the refrigerator negatively colored the overall feel of the room. We had just talked of replacing it, but it and it's freezer work so well and I hated the idea of throwing yet another appliance in the local landfill!
The house sits about 40 feet from the ocean/bay. That close proximity to the salty ocean breezes and the humidity of a tropical island can quickly rust metal surfaces. The type of carpets installed about five years ago, were purchased with moisture resistance in mind and have a moisture resistant barrier. We have them cleaned on a regular basis.
Hilo Bay Haven is located near the Hilo harbor and piers, and there is occasional noise from the harbor activity. However, most guests find the view of a ship coming in and out of Hilo bay, so close by the house, as one of it's most exciting and unique features. There are usually only one, (occasionally two) ships per day and on some days none at all. Most guests have not been overly bothered by the harbor noise.
The view is amazing from the living/dining/kitchen areas and it's convenient location, so close to Hilo town, it's markets and the beautiful Liliuokalani park can't be beat!
Awesome Location! Great view! Very comfortable!
We had a great time. Location was easy to find and get to, was a good home base to see & do about everything we wanted to.
It is right next to the port so there was some occasional noise but it was interesting to see the barges & cruise ships come in.
The house was clean & comfortable & everything worked! (except for the outlets in the bathroom)
Overall, we loved it!
Astonding View Of Hilo BAY
My wife and I stayed in this house in Hilo for two week from mid February to the beginning of March 2016. The property sits on the protected side of Hilo bay about 100 yards from the cruise ship and freight ship pier. While we were there, a cruise ship passed within a few yards of property; close enough to wave to the passengers on the upper deck. The view from the back yard into the bay is relaxing and pleasant. This is also the view seen from inside the living areas of the home because of the homes' unique open design.
Facing the bay is the living room with an alcove with a 8 foot wide bay window. On the opposite side of the house is an identical alcove with a large dinning table and a 8 foot wide bay window. Between these is an outdoor protected deck with table and chairs. Behind the living and dinning areas is the kitchen with the cook top on a counter so that the person cooking has a direct view of the bay. We selected to fix all our meals at the house. The kitchen is a little dated but is spacious with plenty of counter and storage space. The kitchen is well equipped with pots and pans and utensils. The only thing missing from the kitchen is a large cutting board and potato masher.
There are three spacious bedrooms at the front of the house away from the bay.
The house is in a central location; it is half a block to the main road which takes you into town in one direction, and to several close by county beach parks in the other direction. Our favorite park was “ Carlsmith beach park” with a large grass area to sun yourself and large pools of perfectly clear waist high water protected by a lava rock breakwater to take a swim. While we were there, three sea turtles were constant companions. A quarter of a mile toward town this road intersects into a perpendicular highways which takes you to the volcano and the main shopping area.
People will tell you that it is always raining in Hilo- Don't believe it! During our 14 day stay, 12 were sunny to mostly sunny days.
Close to Everything
We arrived on the Big Island right after Hurricane Iselle had made land fall over Kapoho, where we had planned to stay for the week and we were unable to use the rental we had booked. So on to plan B and the house on Hilo Bay. The owner was very accommodating and gracious allowing us to book last minute. It was pretty muggy because of the remnants of the hurricane, but every room had fans to keep the house cool. Nights were quite comfortable.
I will say that the house was very well appointed, everything you could ever need - including coffee grinder, pots/pans, etc. Plenty of silverware, mugs, glasses, and dishes. Very impressed! I've stayed at several private rentals and can say that this was by far the best equipped. It was also very clean and the owners gave explicit instructions about how to take care of the place, even the ants. We really appreciated having the instructions because it just helped with taking care of things and respecting the owners' property. The beds were also made with good quality linens when we arrived and there were plenty of towels.
The location on the water was really nice as was having the deck with great views of the bay. However, it was also near the port and there was some heavy equipment and industrial activities nearby. Quite a bit of activity during the day but very very quiet in the evening, so I would say it's really not much of an impact. The best part was that it was pretty close to everything and a perfect home base for staying on the Big Island. We were minutes from many restaurants and stores. Near Rainbow Falls, Richardsons Beach.
I would definitely stay there again - the owners were very easy to work with and we very much enjoyed our stay.
The essence of Hilo
So close to the venue we attended. The pictures just did not do this home justice as we arrived...we stood in awe of it's beauty. No complaints, better staying in the 'drabby' hotels that Hilo offers. And big enough for 6 women to live under the same roof...LOL! Thank you Lucy for sharing your wonderful gem.
Hula Girls (Maui)
We were in Hilo last week for the Merrie Monarch Festival.
This vacation rental house as the BEST! We had everything we need,
and it has literary in “Hilo Heaven” vacation home! We had breakfast at the dining table with beautiful ocean view every morning, and it is only a few minutes away from the main places in Hilo. We loved it!
