Overview

About the property

The rental sleeps 5 with 1 bedroom and one bathroom.

We would like to welcome you our small cottage at Riverview,a quiet corner within the larger Oak Point community, located on the St. Lawrence river. Enjoy your morning coffee sitting on the deck watching the great blue heron, terns and other waterfowl fishing on the our serene bay. Great sunsets are easily visible from the spacious deck, or living room picture windows, as are the Lakers & Salties that go by in the nearby shipping channel. Canada is just a short hop, skip, jump, boat ride or car ride away. Brockville is 15 minutes by boat. Ottawa and Kingston about 1 1/2 hours by car.

The dwelling, a former boathouse converted into a modern home, has one bedroom and a bath, with a stall shower. Five can sleep comfortably-sheets and blankets are provided however towels are not provided.

A fully equipped kitchen completes the picture. Anglers will certainly enjoy the fishing.

We have all had a vacation where the weather did not cooperate with our plans so here are a few things that previous visitors have found to do on those rainy days.

In the town of Ogdensburg there is the Fredrick Remington Museum . The town of Clayton, 30 miles away has the Antique Boat Museum, and Canada is just across the river. The town of Alexandria Bay, just 20 miles away is great for souvenir shopping, nightlife, and Uncle Sam Boat Tours of Boldt Castle and Thousand Islands points of interest. Another small museum is the Gateway Museum located on Main St. in the village of Morristown. The castle on Dark Island makes for an interesting day trip, you leave from Schermerhorn Landing just 8 miles away.. . Amish hand-made baskets, quilts, aprons, breads and jellies can be purchased from local families.

Visit the Eisenhower lock on the St. Lawrence Seaway just 55 min away. We can check ship schedules for you to insure a large ship will be in the lock when you get there. Being just a few feet from one of these ocean going vessels as they are lifted in the lock with just inches to spare is a once in a life time experience.

You need your passport for this outing. About a one hour drive from Oak Point depending on the delays at the border crossing. On, Wed and Sat. tour Kingston Ontario, Canada, in the early afternoon with a trip to the Maritime Museum and/or the Steamboat Museum, eat dinner in town at one of the various eclectic restaurants and drive to Fort Henry around 6 PM for the evening show, an enjoyable military style 'Tattoo'(Taps), compete with bagpipes and the firing of real cannons The show is all outdoors (you sit high on the old walls of the fort with a breath taking view of Wolfe Island and Lake Ontario in the distance) and it gets chilly by the time it is over around 10 PM so take a jacket. This is a pretty noisy event, as they shoot real cannons, so some little kids might not be too happy.

Back at home you can just sit and relax on the large deck facing the bay, there is docking for a boat, a large yard with a swing set and plenty of parking. The deck is equipped with a patio table, umbrella and chairs.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"In the late spring and early summer of 2011, I was lucky enough to stay at the Caneen's guest house at Oak Point. The home was warm when the outside was cold, the water hot and the beds comfortable after time spent on the River, the kitchen spacious with everything working when needed. And all with the dock and parking right nearby. My thanks to the hospitable John and Peg who managed the place so well."

The Oak Point Community: Oak Point truly is a one of a kind community. As 4th generation Oak Pointers, we can tell you that once you visit, you will return again and again. Kids love all the activities - swimming in the bay, fishing off the dock, visits to the Acorn Community Center for candy & game nights, the 4th of July parade, land & water games and ice cream social. Adults love it for the same reasons! Take a walk around the circle and visit the historic cemetery, swing on the swings at the Acorn, bike through the farm country, buy local produce and baked goods at an Amish farm. A free town boat launch is nearby.

On the Water: The earliest Native Americans called this region Manitowana - the Garden of the Great Spirit, and it is a vacationers' dream! Nature and water activities abound - cruise the 1000 islands, kayak in the early morning or evening to get close to nature, sail or windsurf through the whitecaps, go water-skiing or tubing, jet ski through the seaway channel, watch huge powerboats participate in the several 'Poker Run' events that take place each summer. You could even start a list of all the international ships plying the channel (they are especially beautiful at night with their deck lights glowing). The Thousands Islands is the world's finest fresh water diving destination - dive the many wrecks in water so clear you can see up to 100'. Or just sit and dangle your feet in the water!

Special Interests: Fishing - Pike season starts the 1st of May; Bass & Muskie seasons start the 3rd Sat. in June. Muskie fishing is best in late fall! Kids love catching perch, sunfish & rock bass off the docks all summer long.

Golfing -11 courses with the nearest course just 3 miles away at Langbrook Meadows in Brier Hill; nearby are 3 more on Wellesley Island, 3 in Clayton, the St. Lawrence University course in Canton, the New York State Park Course in Ogdensburg and the Alexandria Bay Municipal Course in Alexandria Bay. There are numerous courses ni Canada.

Cycling - there are many back road opportunities, with difficulty levels ranging from simple to challenging.

Diving - there are many dive outfitters in the region who can take you to the numerous popular and interesting wreck sites all up and down the river.

Fantastic stay at Oak Point!

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is just wonderful! Use as a base for outgoing adventures, or just hang on the porch/sun-room and enjoy the mighty St. Lawrence. Nicely furnished and very clean. The bed (king size) is good too. Kitchen has everything you could possibly need - and more. Great view of the little bay and the Heron and Kingfisher that hang out there too. John and Peggy are excellent - so hospitable, they have lots of local knowledge and are engaging conversationalists too. I can wholeheartedly recommend a stay at this cottage.

Quaint cottage

I love this cottage and the Caneen's. This is a perfect location and we enjoy using the paddle boat. It is a comfortable cottage and a place where one can really relax. It's a nice bonus having heat on a cool River night.

This was our fourth year staying at this lovely property and once again we had a wonderful time by the river. If you want peace and quiet this is the ideal place to stay. There are many interesting places to visit in the vicinity, or just sit beside the water and enjoy.

This was the perfect place for vacation. Relaxing by the water, swimming and fishing. We liked watching the wild life and just listening to the waves lapping against the shore while enjoying the view of the bay and river. Great cabin by the seaway

  • 5 of 5

We had a terrific week. The cabin was so quiet and comfortable, with everything in perfectly working order. I loved sitting in the living room chaise with gorgeous views out the Oak Point's inlet and the seaway. No TV, no AC put us close to nature, quiet, weather, breezes, and helped us withdraw from everything that stresses us at home. A perfect week. The Caneens are friendly, generous hosts. I would definitely recommend this property.
